Refurbishing an OHC 1.3

Hi Guys,
i have an OHC 1.3.

I want to mount an LCD screen in the steering wheel such that when the wheel turns, the screen doesn't.

This screen i want to connect to a FLIR [Forward Looking Infra Red] Pod, among other things like an carputer.

Is this possible and if possible would it be prohibitively / insanely expensive?

I thought it would be quite cool.

Shekhar

Shekhar,

It may not be possible on the steering wheel, let alone be safe in case of an accident etc. Why don't you consider putting it somewhere in the Dash not too far away from the line of vision of the driver? like the instrument panel or even at the bottom of the A-Pillar. This may be easier to achieve and safer too. Just my 2c.

I'm not sure if its feesible. All the more, its quite a distraction.
On second thoughts, maybe not.Doesn't make a big difference if the screen is on the steering wheel, or on the dash.

The Steering wheel for 2 reasons,

1> Easiest to view while driving [Purely from a FLIR point of view]

2> the COOL factor man.

Just want to know if its possible.

as for safety i doubt if the horn is any safer than an LCD Screen.

I want a Multi touch LCD, then specify:
1 finger for selecting & clicking
2 fingers for scrolling and zooming
3 or more fingers for the horn.

that would be cool.... unless ofcourse i got frustrated and pressed the horn really hard ... hehehe

My two bits on this idea - it would be a total distraction, safety issue and finally the horn would too have to be relocated from the steering wheel.

@ sprucegoose : You might want to take a look at this : touchscreen steering wheel Carputer. - MP3Car.com

But, it would be quite a big(sometimes even fatal) distraction while driving.

Guys,

1> It is a safety feature....

2> I intend to connect it primarily to a FLIR [Forward Looking Infra Red] system / Navigation System

It'll be easier taking a peek at the steering wheel than at a dash mounted Screen

3> If Its a touch screen i can use it as the horn also.

Where are you planning to drive that you need an infrared system? Just use a good HID light system...
However, if this works, post pics and a detailed write up.

BBS, good find.

I don't think this is practical. The screen should best be on the dash and not on the steering. Apart from the distraction it'll cause, feels like its a fairly difficult task in hand.

Keep posting if you get more information on this.

I think so that you got carried away with iPhone's touchscreen that you want a multi-touch LCD panel with the same but I doubt that's possible as this is something which I haven't heard of.

Anyways, best of luck and do post if you are successful.

Check the link posted by BBS,

touchscreen steering wheel Carputer. - MP3Car.com

But in that case, i think the screen moved with the steering. Not what sprucegoose wants.

I went through the entire thread who's link you posted, but I can see its a simple touch screen and not multi-touch.

I think you thought, that I meant, simple touch-screen LCD carputer is not possble, but I meant, carputer with multi-touch input system is not something which I've heard of , infact I havent heard Multi-touch in anything other than Apple Products and thats why wrote that he got carried away by using iPhone.

You have multi touch screens available.

They are REALLY <Censored> expensive though.

the only thing i'm worried about is the glare from the screen.

besides, i doubt it'll happen i'm quite sure that i have to change the enitre steering column and get a custom one fitted
