That is a GDI head.
Would have involved too much modifications if I had to use that head. Doesn't make sense.

Re: Engine swap/Performance mods in Lancer

Dyno run, well not sure whether I will be doing it immediately.Current priority is to complete the run in of the engine and sort out minor niggling issues if any since the car was not functional for a few months atleast.

Re: Engine swap/Performance mods in Lancer

After completing the engine build, the car was ready to roll but got stuck because unfortunately we did not have the upper timing belt cover. The search for the same turned out to be more difficult than we thought.
Frustrated with non availability of the same, we finally decided to make one ourselves.
Here are a few pics of the same, please excuse the poor picture quality, thanks to phone cam and noob photographer :P

I know its not a very cool looking cover but then I don't care as long as it serves the purpose.
Now that a cover is in place, the car is finally home after almost 5 months and now the run in period for the new engine begins.
Finally its done, Forged internal + DOHC swap.Phew!

Re: Engine swap/Performance mods in Lancer

Hehe, you find all these complex parts & yet a relatively simple part takes the most the expected time

Keep us posted on you your run & experience with the now All New Lancer

Seriously man, Ironic isn't it ?
Drove her for a few Kms last night, she is driving like a dream.Initial impressions are,
quicker acceleration, improved torque which can be felt while the car pulls in any gear.
Since the run in period is going on, I am not revving her high. mostly keeping around 3-3.5k rpm mark and rarely she sees 4k rpm.
Will revv a bit more when I change oil after 100-150km run which should be tomorrow mostly

Re: Engine swap/Performance mods in Lancer

A few updates,
Few weeks back I ran into some bad luck. While crawling at a speed of 10-20 Kmph, all of a sudden my idler pulley bolt broke!
luckily I was very near to the garage and so got it towed there and immediately checked for damages.
What I feared had happened, since the pulley came off thanks to broken bolt, timing belt got loose and the obvious happened, valves collided with the pistons.
On inspection, to my horror, all of the 16 valves were bent but obviously no damage to the pistons.
Got a new set of valves, shaved the head by a few microns to check warpage, did a basic valve job and assembled the head.
Yesterday, I received my intake manifold that I picked up from a buyer in US since he was selling his for cheap.
Finished installation today and have just returned home.
Details as follows,
* Changed intake manifold from stock/OE 4G94 to stock/OE 4G93.
* Cost involved - ~ 8k including shipping and duties. Not bad eh? that too for a manifold that looked like it was never used or if it was,not for more than a few hundres of Kms.

Initial observations,
* Tremendous improvement in low end.
* Engine has become much more smoother
* Pulls very cleanly and aggressively throughout the RPM band
* I have a SRI K&N filter and now even with the loud straight through 3" exhaust its audible! This wasn't the case before.
* For the first time I got a feeling that the brakes are insufficient and might not stop as expected.Guess its time for brake upgrades.

Will report more observations as I drive her more.

Also, nothing special but I thought that the blue colour I chose for the valve cover was too dark so repainted the valve cover.
This is how it looks ( Note: This is an older pic,the manifold isnt changed in this pic.Sorry but didnt click any snaps today.Might do tomorrow)

Re: Engine swap/Performance mods in Lancer

Nice work man.. when are you going to start modding the beemer?

Also stickier tyres might be better now and might help your braking woes

Modding the beemer ? You are kidding right

I already have Michelin PP2 on the lancer borrowed from my Swift when it was sold.
Problem is due to the delays thanks to non availability of parts and extremely long procurement time, the car used to be stationery for months together which has caused the tyres to become harder. They still have 5k kms left in them from the looks of the tread wear.
I am delaying a new set of tyre purchase as much as possible since she isn't complete yet and I do not want the new set to face the same fate.

Man...like I have said before, kudos for going the extra mile to get things done. But after going through your thread, I have dropped any plans I may have had to do anything like this as I need my car as a daily driver as well.

I think I will stick to computer modifications for now.

Yeah I faced the same problem when my Palio was in the workshop for a month, the tyres had lot of tread but tyres couldn't handle damp roads and kept skidding.

Maybe there will be some light and Yokohama will launch AD08 for you There is already a mention of it on the new Yoko India website

I think Amey wasted a couple of years on PC modding, otherwise we might have had a car to rival the DC Avanti by now.
