Hi Everyone

I have a lhd 1951 4x4 Willys Jeep with a 3 speed Gearbox and its original petrol engine.

I want to swap the engine for something bigger and also add a 4 speed box and retain the 4x4.

I have been told that an Isuzu 1800 petrol from an ambassador would do the trick. This would be mated to a 4 speed gearbox.

Has anyone tried this mod or anything similar with a petrol engine?

Any help you can provide about possible problems or any suggestions would be much apprecaited.

Also, any suggestions for a wide bore exhaust system, bucket seats and chunky off-road tyres to sit on big fat rims.

Thanks in adavance

The Chinkara people do just that. It's a great idea, if you want some punch out of your Jeep!

It can be done & has been done before. The Chinkara people don't offer 4WD on their jeepster though. If you want you can even retain the 3-spd...I have checked out one such MM540 myself and it moves pretty good though it tops out very soon.

Main things to look out for are matching the engine and gearbox. Your present final drive may be unsuitable for the new engine and may have to changed. Not a problem because there are many ratios available for Jeep diffs.

There's no need to go in for a header because you may lose some low-end in the process. For turbo conversion contact one Mr. Psycho :D.

Hi dinya,

I noticed that your location is England... where in England are you ? and your Jeep... is it back in India ?

Yes, you can can fit an Isuzu 1800cc petrol engine.

You would however have to get a Isuzu 4 speed gear box and a Isuzu 4x4 transfer case that can be mated to the engine without any major modifications.

I dont think that you would be able to retain the existing 4x4 transfer case with an Isuzu engine and gear box...

These are just my views, but there are a lot of experienced ppl on forum who have actually done such mods and would be able to guide you better!

Cheers!

The Jeeps in India

I have been informed that the it can be done with some mods. I will find out if its possible to get the Isuzu 4x4 casing as well.

The main thing is if it can be done, what are the advantages and disadvantages ?
