Team-BHP - Sports Catalysts / Free-flowing Catalytic Converters

In an usual free flow exhaust system the catalyst is removed in order to make the exhaust gases flow more freely,and not restrict their flow thus causing a power loss.However removal of the catalyst causes harmful emmisions and is not a "green" approach.Not to mention PUC could also become a problem.

So can sports catalysts be a solution? Are they available in India?

Power gains from a sports catalyst

The catalyst has been viewed as a major enemy of your cars power output, but does the reality bear this out?

Weight is also a consideration, and a sports cat will typically weight less than a standard catalyst. Most sports cats are a drop in replacement although some offer a wider bore capacity so would better suit a car which has had a sports exhaust upgrade.

The power gains on smaller engines will be barely noticeable. On larger engines you can see power gains of between 4 and 10bhp. Generally the more power the car is producing the greater the benefit will be from a sports cat.

A cheaper alternative to get a sports catalyst/ better flowing catalytic converter is to get hold of one which was originally from a car having a lot more horsepower.

Just like free flow exhausts, where the pipe diameter is determined by how much power the existing engine puts out and how much it is intended to put out after mods, a catalytic converter with a larger inside volume will have a more free er flowing effect. This very concept is marketed and sold at high prices by all these high end exhaust manufacturers.

Thank you for the information,no not really looking for one was just reading up a bit and thought i will share it here.
Milltek cost a bomb i think,someone got it for his fiesta for around 68K!

Avishar, that's not really the case. Simply because you may find the same cat in both cars due to cost cutting. I mean VW wont order for different cats for the two different engines, i mean the power difference isn't much. For the Indian consumer it might be but not for VW.

The part I explained in the previous post is with regarding to changing to a cat of a much more powerful car. For e.g. if a car has stock output of say 100 bhp, its highly possible that the exhaust pipe inside diameter is not more than 2 1/4 inch. If you get a cat of a car that produces 150 bhp, it might have a 2 1/2 inch dia cat, which will improve performance. But again, going overboard is also not right if the car won't let out that much exhaust pressure or gases.

So its not just about the power the more powerful car produces but also the size and flow of the cat in that car.
