1) Upgrade to other brands using stock wattage. Just replace the bulbs. No sweat. Expect a small improvement in visibility.
2) Upgrade to 100/90w bulbs. Best left to experts. You will need to install relays, ceramic holders and proper wiring. There is no cutting involved. It's just plug n play. Should cost around 1.2k to 1.5k.
3) HID's alone - Not recommended
4) HID's with projectors - This is expensive. The entire setup would start from 10k all the way upto 18 or 20k depending on the kit used.

Option would be the ideal choice and mostly preferred by many.
Thanks Naveen! That is the answer I was looking for!

So for the 1st option, small = no visible difference = only colour of light changes, or the throw becomes wider and longer too? i haven't said brighter because the wattage is same (?)

I want to be responsible, and don't want to piss people off with my blinding beams - does 2nd and 4th option do that?

1) Just expect a small improvement. Color change is based on the color temp of the bulb. 4300k is the best of the lot. It all depends on the brand. But have heard Philips offers slight improvement when compared to stock headlights.
3) This will definitely blind oncoming traffic since HID's are not designed to be used in stock reflectors. A lot of scattering will be there.
2) and 4) Would do the trick but option 4 is expensive.

Option 2 would be the right choice but expect the headlight assembly to heat up pretty quickly when compared to stock headlights.

Thank you. Let me try 1 actually and then maybe 2. Worst case an outside loss of Rs. 1500 compared to a HUGE cost of HIDs.

Many thanks for throwing light on the issue

Yes, try 1. Just check whether you can see a demo at the accessories shop. They might be able to show some cars with the bulbs. Keep us posted.

I chose option 1 because my ANHC is still under warranty. Upgraded from stock to Osram Night breaker plus, there is an improvement definitely. At least on low beam, I can see what's on the road now.

Re: Auto Lighting thread : Post all queries about automobile lighting here

Hi all,
I upgraded my stock WagonR Lxi bulbs of Halonix make to 90/100W bulbs of Hella make. Also used Hella wiring harness (with complete wiring kit, ceramic holders, relay and two fuses). Haven't been yet noticed much difference in the city as the street lights as much more powerful. Will have to try out in a dark place/on highway night driving.

Got the above purchased at AK Traders, AM road, near JC road for Rs.700/- for wiring kit and Rs.320 for 4 Hella 90/100 bulbs total accounting to Rs.1168/-(with tax) and installed at a mechanic on AM Road itself for Rs.150/-. Thanks for all the suggestions guys which was really helpful

Between have to add this. AK Traders guys were at first reluctant to provide me on 4 bulbs as they insisted to buy min 10 bulbs and no single piece of wiring harness!!! After convincing that i came from far off place, they provided me the items.

Re: Auto Lighting thread : Post all queries about automobile lighting here

Hi all,
Where can i get detailed information about projector headlight design?. i.e. Design of reflector and lens. I have googled much information but it only shows the basic patten of projectors like you will find in previous pages of this thread.
If anyone from automotive lighting design will highlight on this topic, it will be helpful.

Re: Auto Lighting thread : Post all queries about automobile lighting here

Have a City April 2012 model. I drive a lot on the highway and feel the low/high beam is not at all sufficient. What should I upgrade
Just the bulbs?
Go for a HID/Projector setup?

Please suggest.

Well it is all said in the earlier posts.
You have the following options :-

a) Upgrade/change to bulbs of other brands using stock wattage like Osram NB+ or Philips Xtreme Vision. This would be easy to do, cost 1.1K. Expect a small improvement in visibility say 30%.
b) Upgrade/change to 100/90w bulbs with good quality relays, ceramic holders and proper wiring. There should be no cutting involved, just plug n play, best to install from the accessory shop. Should cost around 1.5k.
c) 4300K HID bulbs with Morimoto projectors - it will be expensive. The entire setup would cost 18 or 20k. Installation should be done by specialists.

I would suggest go for option (a), that would be sufficient for most people and no question of the warranty being void (since you have a new car). Before you go for the other options, please ensure with your dealer that such action does not void your warranty.

Never use HID bulbs in stock reflector, as the same may be suggested by many shops.

What about the % of visibility improvement if I go for option b?
For both option a and b, can I get the bulbs and fix it myself.
In option a, should I stick with Osram or Philips again?

Percentage improvement is difficult to say but option (b) is perceived to give better results. The bulbs Philips Rally or Hella are ordinary bulbs, not even halogen. A common person may not be able to do this mod on his own because it involves fixing the relay, ceramic holders (to handle the extra heat) etc. You should be able to judge whether you have the technical capability to handle this. Con is that the extra heat may damage the reflector and glass in the long run.

In option (a) Philips Xtreme Vision is said to give better results than Osram NB+, request the shop for a demo of both and decide. This involves replacing the stock bulbs with the new one and you should be able to handle this on your own.

Option b is kinda confusing. Should I go for it for better visibility or stay away from it since it damages the reflector. Hmm..Dilemma!!
Does the Philips Xtreme Vision give a white light ? And what wattage should I ask for ?

It comes in the stock wattage of 60/55W and use 4300K bulbs and not the higher ones.
XV gives slightly white light compared to NB+. The white ones that you see on the roads are HID/xenon.
Since you have a new car it would be better to go for the replacement of the stock bulbs with same wattage. In case you are not satisfied you can always go for other options later on.

It is not that the relectors would be damaged, but there is always a higher possibility of this with the excess heat. Other cons are battery drainage and possibility of dust entering the headlight assembly. The cable has to be inserted through a hole in the rubber cap at the back of the headlight assembly. If this is not sealed properly, dust may enter the headlight assembly through the gap.

This is only meant to tell you the possibilities, you need to weigh the options and take a decision on your own. If you go through the thread from the start you will see many members using 100/90W in their cars for 2/3 years without any damage.

Well, they advertise that there will be over 90% improvement for option b but dont expect that. Say something between 30-40% improvement (atleast from my personal experience).

Pure white light is very hard and cannot be achieved when it comes to halogens. There will be a tinge of white light and will stand out from stock halogens (see pic few pages back). For pure white light you will need to go for HID's which is not recommended to be used with reflectors. If you are planning to stick with stock wattage, just ask for 55w bulbs. Just replace the bulbs and you are good to go.

Re: Auto Lighting thread : Post all queries about automobile lighting here

Not even a month & RHS 100/90 are gone !
Got a replacement. One more & i'll go back to the stock ones. Had a chat with the friendly neighborhood spare parts retailer. "No matter whether they are Halonix or Philips, excessive heat always takes it's toll" . Any suggestions ? Should i revert back to stock ones, or any other 60/55 w ones? Is there any solution to excessive heat generated ?
