PICS : Hitch Mounted Bicycle Rack on my Mahindra Scorpio

did this MOD for my Scorpio to mount a SARIS hitch mounted 4 bike rack
fabricated a 2" hitch receiver, so I can get this rack out and put in a Ball mount
if I need to tow my trailer.

check it out

re: PICS : Hitch Mounted Bicycle Rack on my Mahindra Scorpio

With the bike mounted, does the increased dimensions on either side owing to the wheels of the bike cause a problem in traffic?

Would it have been a better option to have a roof rack on top of the Scorpio, on which the bike can be placed?

re: PICS : Hitch Mounted Bicycle Rack on my Mahindra Scorpio

i think one can buy these cycle mounts ready made at Decathlon Sports in Bangalore.

rather than go the fabrication route it might be better to buy one of these from a reputed company and then get it fitted.

some time back on a visit to Ooty I saw several vehicles which had cycles mounted on them - Scorpio, Safari and Innova. All of them seemed to be managing quite well. But it is true the cycle tends to stick out on the sides and that could be dangerous in traffic situations especially if one forgets that one is carrying a cycle with one.

re: PICS : Hitch Mounted Bicycle Rack on my Mahindra Scorpio

Because of the wide profile of the scorpio's rear end, the wheel comes out just about 8-10 inches. I always get the wheels to come out on the driver side, as it gives me a better judgement than them coming out from the other side.

I dont like the roof racks because, scorpio is already a tall vehicle. And to mount a bike on top means adding about 3-4 ft of height. Driving through cantonment (read army) areas around Pune will behead my bikes because of Metal Height Barriers placed all over the city.

Hi Shankar
the Max number of bicycles you can carry on a trunk mounted rack is 3, and Decathlon doesnt keep bicycle racks.

Saris is internationally known for their bike racks and come with a lifetime warranty on them.

I do have a trunk mounted rack, but prefer the hitch mounted one due to more stability.

Decathlon doesn't sell car racks, The RACK is not fabricated only the mount is.

re: PICS : Hitch Mounted Bicycle Rack on my Mahindra Scorpio

thanks for the correction.
how do you find the fabricated mount quality?

whenever I carry my cycle I have to typically stuff it into the rear luggage area in my scorp. But this can be detrimental to the seat rear vinyl coverings etc.
the rack is a better way but since I dont carry the cycle so often i dont feel I should encumber myself with the extra rack etc.

re: PICS : Hitch Mounted Bicycle Rack on my Mahindra Scorpio

pretty nice, it fits in where the Step is usually mounted.

Took a 16mm plate and had it profile cut, then welded a 2"
receiver pipe to it and drilled 12 mm holes in the plate and bolted
the plate to the where the step mount is - on the chassis.

the receiver does not stick out of the rear bumper area, so it is safe
when the rack is not inserted. whenever i want to go for a ride, i insert
the hitch end of the rack in to the receiver and lock it in with a 18mm bolt
and im good to go.

the rack folds down as well, in case you wanna access your rear door !

Re: PICS : Hitch Mounted Bicycle Rack on my Mahindra Scorpio

A quick question: How come the trailer registration is different from the vehicle?

And does it affect/gets questioned by cops anywhere?

Not just different, but thousands of miles apart. The trailor registration is I believe from Dibrugarh Assam.

I think your mod will attract cops' eyes since this is not RTO endorsed. I have seen imported SUVs(I even have a pic, i will find that) which come stock with this feature.

Neat job, but can that be removed, if you're not gonna mount the cycle? Btw, you must be a cycle enthusiast. Have you participated in any of the rallies or done mount biking types?

Cool stuff!

What were the individual components involved and how much did this cost.

Re: PICS : Hitch Mounted Bicycle Rack on my Mahindra Scorpio

Registering a Trailer in Maharashtra is a long and tedious process, so we bought this out of state trailer.

I did Pune - Bangalore - Pune plus a lot of use between Pune - Mumbai, had no issues.
