my Hellla redgrille's died after yesterday's rains. Are they serviceable, or will I have to buy a replacement set?

I've seen some roadside guys servicing it. I would recommend you to buy a new pair since horns are like shock absorbers, better replace them.

Was looking for the Skoda/VW type horn for my Santro in Vellore. A prominent accessory shop showed me the Roots Windtone - and quoted 1200 bucks (including relays, fixing et al.)

1. Is the quote genuine or is he trying to fleece me??
2. And he says Roots doesn't come with a warranty card. True?

I have been replacing horns every 2 years continuously ,may be I am using it too much.

First one lasted for about 1 year or so and second one for 21/2 to 3 years (till Sept/2012) but i serviced/adjusted is 3 to 4 time before it became non serviceable.

The new one costed me 1250 and thats it, now its fine.

Yes Windtone is the skoda type horn but check and buy it .Also install it in such a way that they are loud and also away from water.Position of the horn will give a great amount of difference.

I am not sure about the warranty but cost was i guess around 600 or 800.

And how water proof is the location of those horns in your Santro? It looks kinda vulnerable just behind the grille.

Pardon my lack of electrical knowledge. Wont there be a relay in the existing circuit?
Wont the same work when changing the horns? Will the existing relay not be able to manage the electric load of the new horn?

Nearing 3 years/21000 km in Kerala. No problems to date. I guess if it survived 3 years in Kerala rains, it is safe enough and worth enough for Rs.500. Only annoyance is it has become too common; even in autos and bikes.

Kerala & Orissa, they got wet, but never submerged, so lasted 4 years. didnt last 6 months in chennai though. but then again, they get drowned in the OMR everyday, and they're in a very vulnerable location (next to the front fogs)

Went to Reliance Autozone, Ambience (Gurgaon) yesterday to get a new pair. They don't stock anything except Hella. Red grille were out of stock too.

Took a demo of yellow grille and a red windtone type. Yes they are good , but when i tried my OEM ones, they sounded more or less the same. I have twin Hella some water proof types in my esteem. Didn't feel like spending 1400 bucks for a marginal difference.

Will search for Roots windtone, Bosch, and finally roots megasonic.
The staff at reliance pointed out that as i already have a pair, i won't be needing a relay. Is it correct?

I have Hella Black Trumpet Horn on the Swift. These are the compact ones with an open mouth. It has a soft sound and is holding up well.

The bumper needs to come off to fit them on the car though.

I hate shrill horns.

Since you have OEM dual horns , you will not require a relay. I also replace my OEM horns directly with Bosch Symphony, no relays required as I think it comes from factory.

Skoda horns are the most popular in aftermarket horn installation space and almost 7/10 folks go for it.

I too have same horn in my Cruze which i got for Rs.700. I like the sound and also the way it scares away the "loitering kinds" from the front of my Cruze

Got new horns for my Santro Xing!
Bosch Symphony (Skoda/VW sounding).
550/- bucks for the horn, 800/- total (for relay + switch + wiring + labour)!
Made in India, with one year warranty.
Sounds decent. Fresh, compared to the OEM horns I've been listening to for almost 7 years now. Not too loud maybe. But I haven't listened to it from outside the car properly.

Some pics:

-Both horns mounted on a single clamp bolted on. Looked a little flimsy to me. Repeatedly asked the guy whether it will last. He was damn sure it would!

-Horrible positioning of the switch. It's just wedged into the gap between the panels. The guy says there is no other place on a Santro dash where he can put the switch.

-Box with warranty card

Shouldn't the horns have been positioned the other way around so that the trumpet side was facing outward?

The switch is at a horrible location! Please make changes to this. Use some imagination
