I have decided to go with Petronas Syntum for my Swift provided it is 100% imported and not imported and repackaged here. Otherwise i will try the Mobil Super 'MS' which is specially formulated for Suzuki 1.3 liter engines same as the one in my Swift.

5W40 or 5W50 both are better than 5W 30 in terms of the temp range they cover, you could use either.

I've just changed to Mobil 1 5W-50 SuperSyn oil for my fiesta diesel. It costs 950 per ltr, and consumed 5 ltrs. Also I have changed the fuel, air and oil filters respectively. Total costs around 7k including labor. Here is my question, Is this brand synthetic oil common for both petrol and diesel? I don't see anything mentioned in the bottle label. Also, Is it advisable to use 5W-50 for my 4 year old and 49K ODO fiesta diesel? Kindly help me out on this. But i see there is a noticable difference in the sound from the engine also feeling smooth(!).

I want to get my car (Ford Fiesta 1.6 Petrol) serviced outside the Ford dealership. According to the owner's manual we need to use Semi synthetic engine oil with a viscocity of SAE5W-30.

I am not able to source this oil anywhere in and around my residence. All the shop guys say this oil is not much in demand and so nobody stocks it. Please advice if i can use any other semi synthetic engine oil with a different viscocity.

The dealer recommended it over castrol magnetic which retails for almost same price.
He even recommended Petronas over Castrol.

thanks Racoon for leading me to the ARU shop. He stocks almost all brands.

Flushed the engine and filled in TOTAL QUARTZ 7000 semi synthetic in it.
But the idiot mechanic referred the CASTROL chart on which it was written that Alto needs 3.0 litres of oil.
This happened in a flash before i could make out that. i was busy speaking with the workshop owner.

But i left it as it is. The immediate effect was a very very smooth engine. Did the expressway runs on high RPMs too. the harshness has totally vanished.
Seems my petronas fully synthetic oil had served its life to max and thats why the engine had become harsh or TOTAL is just a much better oil.

Just a quick question : i see that the oil is exactly at the max mark on the dip stick. may be a mm more than that. Will the additional 300/310 ml be an issue there ?

I don't understand what you are saying. Did the mechanic pour in more than 3 litres? If so, how can it be exactly at the upper level mark? Even exact 3 litres will show a slight overfill in alto as the capacity is only 2.7 litres - I am assuming 800 cc alto here. Since the filter will take up about 200 ml, it will be perfect if we pour in 2.900 litres.

An mm or two above the upper level mark is ok. But don't pour in any more oil.

mine is 2004 model 800 cc alto. The manual says its 2.7 litres. To be precise the mechanic poured 3 litres and about 50 ml extra. Still the dip stick shows just a mm above the max mark. This is tested when my car is parked overnight. So i am sure the oil has settled in the sump by then.

The same oil is used in Maruti SX4 too. The A.S.S. in Vijayawada and Hyderabad have it. I guess it should be available in any Maruti A.S.S in Bangalore too. Otherwise try any outlet of Idemitsu.

I prefer to stick to what the manual says.

Sump capacity 2.7 litres, filter capacity 200 ml, so 2.900 litres total. Mechanic filled 3.050 litres so it shows 1 mm above the upper mark, no problem.

Both are excellent oils. The grade is written as mmWnn. Make sure than nn is the same (can be higher) as recommended. You can find more on this in many posts, incl. a few by me.

I changed the oil on my baleno on last saturday. Last time I had filled castrol GTX six months back and It had done around 5000 kms. Since most of my driving is very short trips everyday (less than1-2 km runs!) and long distance(60-70kms) once a week i decided to change the oil @5000kms. Moreover I was itching to try some new oil.

I had located a Petronas dealer near my place and went to him. I asked for Petronas MAch5(mineral) and he had it in two grades SG and SM. He quoted around Rs 550 for SG if i remember correctly. SM grade only came in 3 litres so it was ruled out as Baleno needed 3.3 litres.

Then he showed me synthetic blend Petronas Syntium 800 (15W50 Exceeds SM) in a 4 L pack and quoted Rs 950(later he gave it to me @Rs 900 as he was impressed with my knowledge about grades!) I did an engine flush (cyclo @Rs 180) and idled the engine for 3-4 mins after putting in the flushing oil. Though the engine oil that came out wasn't that black or sludge filled. It was more or less like if you change the oil after 10-12000 kms in a high mileage vehicle.

The new synthetic blend Syntium 800 was filled in and I immediately noticed a change. The idling was much smoother even when i switched on the AC immediately after starting. I feel the RPMs are lower than earlier at same speeds and yesterday I drove for 75 kms on the highway and I enjoyed the drive much more than I ever did after an oil change. The car felt so smooth to drive!

I feel petronas syntium 800 is absolute value for money and @ Rs 225/litre it is an option not to be overlooked over plain mineral oils.

I have been using default( i assume mineral oil) engine oil from the A.S.S. But after reading this thread i am tempting to try Synthetic Oil for my 5.5 yrs old Ford Ikon 1.3 Flair ( 67K on ODO). Have someone already tried synthetic oil for Ikon by any T-BHP members? Would you please mention the grade that you have used?

thanks

My driving pattern is similar to yours. I have used 10,000/once a year for the past two decades with no hassles.

15W50 and the price gives me a feeling that it is a semi-synth. It would have been 5W50 or 10W50 if it were a full synth at more like Rs.800 per litre.

@adrenalin: I will buy a semi-synth.

A lot of the improvement reported is due to the general tightening up during a service and not necessarily due to the oil.

@sgiitk

Yes it was semi synthetic oil(petronas syntium 800). Fully synthetic ( I think Petronas syntium 1000) was something like Rs 2000+ for a can, which in my opinion is not worth for my kind of use. But the car definitely ran smoother than when I added Castrol GTX last time around.

Reading the recommendations on tbhp, I used to 'harass' my Lancer A.S.S. on every service about using synthetic engine oil, and they always turned it down saying company only recommends Motul Mineral :-(

Imagine my surprise, when @my 70k service, I didn't pester them for once, and later when I am paying the bill, the S.A. tells me about HM has authorised used of Motul synthetic as an option !

So, @ my 80k service couple of months back (actually ~74k on ODO), I switched to Motul 8100 Xcess 5W-40. Costed me about Rs. ~3200 since they only used 3.3l out of a 4l new can, and charged me for 3.3l :-)

Immediate impression was the engine revvs much smoother and sounds less strained at higher rpm (4G15 groans even at 4000rpm in a manner I rarely pushed it beyond).
After 600-odd kms,
* Engine revving quite smoothly and less strained @ 4000-4500rpm
* Slightly better pickup at lower rpms. Means, I can also pull in 4th gear from ~30kmph, and 3rd gear from ~20kmph without judder etc unlike before.
* FE has improved by ~1-1.5km measured over several fills & 1500km !

Service interval doubled to ~20k/1year from ~10k/0.5 years by HM.
So, I am really enjoying the synthetic oil switch over!
