@a4anurag; If the original fill is synth then might as well stick with it. This is what happened with my Civic.

Yes sir, that is what I was thinking but the worst part guys at MASS are in dilly-dally regarding what is filled in from factory, I presume it is synthetic so I will fill in synthetic oil at 5K kms.

A good indicator is whether this vehicle has a longer interval to the first change than the company norm!

As cost cutting is evident everywhere today I don't think Maruti will fill Synthetic in Swift from factory. They will however try to convince you to fill synthetic during the service. Manufacturers today try to save even a few hundreds during production .

The grade used is 5W40 on the swift and dzire while the ritz does not get 5W40 as per this cicular.

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/long-t...ml#post2680931

Ever since the circular, MSM chennai uses shell MGO semi synth for the mineral and Mobil1 or shell helix ultra 5W40 for synthetic. For the new swift and dzire all M.A.s.S uses synthetic by default unless we explicitly tell them mineral

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Today I drove a 49000 km done swift VDI and was amazed with the smoothness of the engine, FYI I drive a 46000 km Dzire. On inquiring with the owner he tells me he used Mobil1 synthetic oil. I was truly impressed. Mobil 1 for my next oil change.

Did your friend mean Mobil Delvac 1? 'Cause AFAIK, Mobil 1 oils are for petrol engines, not diesels. I could be wrong, though.

Cheers,
Vikram

Mobil 1 spec:
Quote:
Meets the requirements of API SN/SM, ACEA A3/B3 & A3/B4 and Nissan GT-R.
Approved: BMW Longlife Oil 01, Chrysler MS-10850/MS-10725, MB-Approval 229.5/229.3, Porsche A40 and VW 505 00/502 00. Recommended by ExxonMobil for use in applications requiring API CF and Fiat 9.55535-Z2/9.55535N2/9.55535M2.
Mobil 1 although is meant for petrols can be used for diesels too. In fact MASS fill Mobil 1 for both petrol and diesel cars if you ask for a synthetic oil. Although Delvac 1 is the specific synthetic oil for diesels but you won't find that in MASS .

Spec for Delvac 1 is
Quote:
API CI-4 PLUS/CI-4/CH-4/SL/SJ
You can easily figure out the the Delvac 1 is higher grade oil than Mobil 1 when it comes to diesels.

It was Mobil 1 0w-40 don' know if it was for petrol or for diesel. Are they different Mobil1's for different fuel engines?

That was what I thought, but if you see archat68's post [the one below mine], it seems that Mobil 1 can be used for petrol as well as diesels too.

Cheers,
Vikram

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

My Hyundai Santro is due for Oil change, how good is Shell Helix HX7 10W40.

The below posted shell websites mentions that " For gasoline, diesel and gas engines; also suitable for biodiesel and gasoline/ethanol blends"

http://www.shell.com/ind/products-se...hx7-10w40.html

Any user review, does it mean it can be used for petrol as well as diesel engine ?

Should i go ahead with it ? Or some other recommendations ?

I'd think more than enough for a Santro, so you should go ahead with this. Other options in semi synthetic would be Total 7000, Castrol Magnatec, Mobil Super XHP (all 10W40). Can't go wrong with any of these for a Santro.
