Try them,if they dont have MX,which is very unlikely, tell them to get it for you.

I knew reaching Mobil was difficult but I didn't realise it was this difficult. The phone numbers given on the website do not work. Found a Mobil office number in the city from the net and realised that the lady who was on the other end doesn't know that Mobil sells engine oils. Realised after some ten minutes that the office I reached deals only in polymers!!
Can someone please tell me a reliable Mobil 1 dealer in Calcutta and also whether Mobil 1 is available in 20w40 grade for my Esteem?

For the Esteem, I would use what I use for my Baleno and Getz - Mobil 1 Supersyn 5W-50. the range of grades is wide enough to be used in most parts of India, except perhaps Ladakh/ Kashmir where temperatures go below zero degrees Celsius.

Maruti recommends 20wx40 mineral for esteem. Is it critical that we maintain the same grade while switching to synth? I know 5x50 is wider and would cover 20wx40, by conventional logic. but i don't want to go wrong here.

One query that I have:
suppose my manufacturer recommends 15 w 40 oil.

If I put 15 w 30, isnt it better (than 15 w 40)?
At higher temp, the engine oil still retains its viscosity.

?

Alpha
You might want to consult this. Car Bibles : The Engine Oil Bible I felt very confused after reading it a few times. So - "caution speed breaker ahead".

alpha1, you have it other way round.
15w40 will retain viscosity more than 15W30
So if manufacturer says 15W30, you can go for 15W40, not the opposite

Recommend oil for Alto

Hi
I have service coming up for my car - Alto STD - done 29000 KMS. I am planning to give for service at 30000KMS. Please advice.

1) Should i switch to Castrol Magnatec (semi-synthetic) or a Synthetic oil (Mobil, etc)

2) For moving from regular mineral oil used by dealers to Synthetic oil, engine flush is recommended. Is it required before using Magnatec?

3) Please recommend brand/dealer for engine flush and Synthetic oil in Bangalore, preferably South Bangalore.

Thanks

1) If you plan to keep the car for long,do high mileage and want the engine to be healthy all through its life, you should definitely get the synthetic. If not, run on semi synth too. Magnatec is good.

2) Not absolutely necessary. But, if you do, then well and good.

3) Check the last few pages of this thread, there were addresses and phone numbers in a post.

Petronas Syntium 3000

HELLO guys !! Finally i have done it

my dream of using a fully synthetic oil is fulfilled. i got myself a 4 litre can of petronas SYNTIUM 3000 fully synthetic 5w40 engine oil for my alto.

1.Syntium 3000 - Rs 2100 ( discount 20% on old MRP of Rs 2600)
2.Cyclos motor flush - Rs 170
3. Mico oil filter - Rs 84
4.Castrol coolant- Green -Rs 250
5.Labor -Rs100.

initial impressions- engine noise reduced considerably. idling has improved a lot. harshness of engine is gone.

pick up- not tested, top speed - not tested.

i will update as soon as i make a trip. i couldnt drive much as the mechanic is just 100 mts away from my house.

** please check the specs in the attachment

reviews : i never thought that synthetic oil will change the engine behavior so drastically. now the engine is revving very freely and idling rpm has increased. i think it will take time for the ECM to correct it again.

now the car is pulling up better in 3rd and 4th gears. overall noise has reduced marginally. also there are no vibrations in the gearknob now.

i dint observe and increase in top speed, though a slight difference in pick up is there. overall i am very much satisfied with Syntium 3000 from petronas.
best value for money.

I went to Marketing Times Workshop in Okhla yesterday to check with the service engineer what type of engine oil is used. They said they use the Mobil regular engine oil or the synthetic Mobil1, but they quoted around 1000 per liter for the Mobil1 .

From what I read in the forum, Mobil1 is around 600/L, I didn't argue or discussed the price difference with him and I left.

What I wanted to know, can I change the engine oil myself if it only requires draining the previous oil from underneath the engine body, or is it a difficult task ?

You can/should get it done from any mechanic. Will cost you 100 bucks in labor. Replacing oil is easier, its the oil filter that needs experience.
