If your running is really low, better idea is to use mineral oil, with oil change every 6 months, instead of putting expensive synthetic oils.

Thanks mate. I really wanted an answer that would suit a layman when talking car oils. I was contemplating changing to synthetic sometime soon, but with only city driving, I think i'll continue sticking with mineral.

Well, I experienced something the hard way yesterday.

Don't overfill engine oil. Yesterday while changing engine oil, the mechanic poured in the entire 4L instead of the recommended 3.7L engine oil. After that the car started shuddering at low gear, with AC the power drop was significant. Did not realize what might be the problem till late in the evening. Drained 300-400ml of engine oil out again from a roadside mechanic, after that the situation seems to have improved.

Yes, 3.7 is for a WagonR as mentioned in the owners manual.

In city driving stress on oil is more, so in a sense synthetic will do better, provided your change intervals are not extended.

If mineral oil, ensure that oil changes are frequent and you can ensure similar protection but at a cheaper cost, if running is really low.

Update: After draining out excess oil of about 300-400ml, the shuddering has disappeared. The engine is behaving normal now.

However I'm surprised, an excess of only 300ml overfill can have such a negative effect. I can understand if you overfill by .5 to 1L, it can impact the engine.

3.3 L is the capacity of the engine Oil sump. So one can fill from 3 L to around 3.2 L. Yes 3.1 L is ideal in Swift D.

Hi All,

Like, lohit, I too have the similar query. Where can I buy synthetic oil in Bangalore. Have wandered around some shops in JC Road, but was not too sure of the quality.

Also, which would be the best synthetic oil for a Maruti Alto. I would like to change to a synthetic oil at my next service, so your inputs on these two queries would be greatly appreciated.
