But I did not feel it after switching to Shell Helix 15W40 from MGO 20W40.

Another Q, which may have been answered: Am taking my vista for a 10K service. Am planning to get the synthetic - will look for delvac, if not Mobil 1. Any other brands that you would recommend, given the doubt on the availability of these oils at TASC.
Anyone have any previous exp with changing to synthetic at TASC? What was the cost?
I know Tata promotes castrol heavily - Are there any castrol synthetics which are good? Any reviews on Magnatec for diesel?

Hi

Shell has changed the names of its Helix range. For those who want to know here is the name from old to new in the file attached.

Please not, HX5 is premium mineral oil and HX7 is the semi synthetic oil.

Talking to shell marketing person I found that HX7 is not yet available in Bangalore and could take another 2 to 3 months to be launched here.

@Vista_Qjd - Mobil 1 is not a Diesel engine oil and is not recommended for MJD/QJD/DDIS engine. You either use Mobile Delvac 1 (Synthetic) or Mobil Delvac MX (Mineral).

Guru, any idea when "HX7" will be introduced in the market?

"HX5" costs 915 bucks, any idea how much HX7 costs?

I Got Hx5 for Rs 685/- for a 3 L can.

For some reason, I don't know why the Hx7 semi synthetic has not been launched all over India. I think it is only available in Mumbai and it possibly could be launched in other parts of the country in a few months.
However, Hx5 is good .

That's possibly because Shell 15W-40 is superior to Maruti's 20w-40 otherwise you'd be going back to MGO.

Cheers!

well my experience with thin oil is bad i had put 0w-40 mobil1 after getting an advice from honda and believe me the engine became slightly rough and after a few days i started feeling a little heavyness in engine as the engine block was getting hot(mostly on signals and heavy traffic conditions) and the acceleration was being very jerky.
i then switched on to 10w-30 honda OEM oil and things got back to normal though i still miss that smoothness in the engine .
i have a nhc WITH 13000KMS on the odo.
my recommendation is you stick with 5w-40 oil it must be good and less thinner than 0w-30 and anyways i dont think it is suitable for our climate. as earlier honda used 20w-50 oil as oem

Also my father has 2003 model NHC and he has clocked 125000kms on it . he has ALWAYS used OEM oil and his car is super super smooth till now . no problems of sludge at all.

I am not entirely surprised reading about your experience with 0w oil. My OHC used OEM Idemitsu 20w-50 till I shifted to 15w-40 Magnatec (thats what it was in those days) and I tried 5w-50 Mobil1 just once before shifting back to Castrol.

0w is generally recommended for cold weather conditions. Toyota in the US/Canada recommends 5w-20 in the new generation cars. And this is an all weather oil. Of course some parts of the southern US experience tropical temps like we do here.

My car is currently on 5w-40 Shell Helix Ultra synthetic. Trying synth after a long time and only because it is the same grade/spec as the mfr recommended synthetic oil. Shell HU is good oil and I think it is reasonably priced compared to Mobil1. Unfortunately Mobil1 does not come in grades recommended by my car mfr (only in 0w-40 and 5w-50) so I keep away from Mobil though it may be better than Shell. Using synthetic + iridium plugs has made a marginal difference to my car's mileage. It now give 16.3 on the highway with A/C on compared with 15.6 previously. Not sure if it is worth all the added expense. But the car runs very smooth.

Cheers!

@10,000 kms, switch to 5W40.
Shell Helix Ultra or Mobil Synt S.
Should cost around 2800 for a 4 litre can.
