Go ahead and get it. Excellent pricing as long as its Mobil1 and not Mobil synt S.
What grade is it?

Semi-Synth OIl for Santro!!

My 2003 Santro has done 60K Kms.I remember the last oil change was at 52K Kms with a Mineral oil(servo/MAK i guess). Now i want to switch to Semi-synth oil since the engine is aging.Which brand and grade do you recommend? Most of my drive is within city limits with an occasional long drive.

The clutch too is pretty hard with a strained noise while engaging the clutch..is that a indication for clutch replacement??

The noise while engaging the clutch is due to faulty throw out bearing.
Check the clutch cable for hard feeling clutch first.

I was using Mobil 1 for quite some time in my Esteem that has done 60k plus now. Recently I changed my oil and got Castrol's Edge, instead of Mobil 1.

Edge is simply superb. I am hooked. The car is silky smooth now. Driving it never felt so good.

hi with regard to the castrol edge, is it a synthetic or mineral oil. What is the viscosity rating of the oil.

i believe one should stick to this grade oil as the new VVT engine needs a thin oil for optimum performance.
well for now idemitsu engine oils are manufactured by savita chemicals, india.
Hi Mihir,
Isnt it better to stick with Castrol magntaec 10w-40 ( API-SM ) or a synthetic blend like Valvoline durablend.API-SL ?

Whenever you change the oil, it is best that you change the oil filter too. At ~Rs. 80 for the Alto oil filter, it is easy on the wallet too. Sticking to the old oil filter might lead to impurities that are stuck in the old filter entering the engine.

As my car will have done only about 3000 KM in six months, I feel changing the filter once a year should not matter. Honda recommends such an oil change cycle, I think. Moreover I intend to do the intervening oil change in the Shell station, and they neither have nor do the filter change.

At your low usage you may simply change the filter @ 6 months and keep the oil for 1 yr.
Usually engine oil itself would not deteriorate to that extent considering the low usage, the additives do. But given a 6000 km annual run you can bet the oil would be as good at the year end.
By changing the filter you would actually enhance the longevity of oil as all the trapped dirt, carbon accumulated over 6 months will be removed from the engine.

I may sound stupid but does anyone know about a synthetic oil from shell (priced at Rs. 900/liter)? How is the performance? My oil change interval is nearing so need to know. Sorry if it is already posted earlier in the thread.

pricing of Synthetic oils

Selenia WR 5W-40 costs 650/- per litre. THis is used on the Linea/Punto MJD, and is synthetic based oil.

Mobil 1 costs around 950/-. Why such a large price difference , is it due to the Mobil branding ? How much do other synthetic based oil cost roughly?
