Your options:
Mobil Synt S - 5W40
OWS 5W40
Shell Helix Ultra 5W40
Castrol EDGE 5W40

Can you check your owner's manual and revert?
Any ideas of the current prices in your city?

750/L for the Shell Helix ultra ( I remember paying 650 months back)
Mobil 1 5W50 ~800-850/L
Castrol Edge and Mobil Synt S should be cheaper.

My last oil change with the shell cost only 2000+

im gettin 5w50 for 650 a litre. might be able to bring them down to 625. but will 5w40 make such a big difference in power? because i dont know of any 5w40 synthetic. there is an ows `5w40 which costs 300 per litre more than mobil1.

My NHC is due for oil change.
In the last 2 oil changes, I had put Synthetic oil. I wanted to know, is there any issue in replacing now with the normal oil. I definitely experienced the smoothness in engine performance, but now the cost also matters (~2800/- vs ~900/-) Is this switching advisable?

Yeah do a complete drain and downgrade, if unavoidable. Go with a good semi-synthetic oil from any of the reputed brands.

i suggest you switch over to idemitsu engine oil. it is really best for HONDA engines and is cheap too. 750~800rs for 3.6 ltrs at HONDA A.S.S.
the grade is 10w-30. or go for any 10w-30 engine oil with api-sm standard as honda recommends this grade for all their cars except honda accord and CRV.

HONDA A.S.S. uses 0W-30 fully synthetic engine oil from IDEMITSUI which is not available outside. it is the best engine oil for any HONDA vehicle as i have been using it in mumbai for past 3 months without any problem. stick to this engine oil as
1. it will cost 2900rs. for your accord
2. very very good engine oil.

nitrous i understand what you are trying to say. i had the same opinion about 0w-30 engine oil from idemitsui for honda accord but trust me i have a new honda accord and i have a NHC. i have been using this oil and it is too good. it is compatible with indian weather. infact the 0w-40 mobil1 engine oil that i bought from US was not compatible with our kind of climate i had major problems with it.
i dunno how but these oils are new formulation as even maruti SX4 using 5w-30 engine oil from servo or idemitsu(API-SJ)!!
and shell has come up with this 5w-30 shell ultra advance engine oil.
i think this is something to do with fuel economy and new technology in engine oils!

Thanks Jaggu, mdesai_1981

Honda *** in Kochi says if Synthetic oil, replace at 10000km and ASS@Bangalore says irrespective of Synthetic/Stock, replace @5000 for all new CITYs
I feel if not 10000, we can extend it to 7000 and irrespective of Kms every 6months.

Cost of Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 in Pune

Does anyone know how much Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 cost in Pune per litre? Is that available at places other than Shell petrol pumps? Any retail outlet close to Aundh?

^^^I have seen Shell synth oils at an auto spare/accessories shop almost next to Kulkarni Petrol bunk at the begining of Laxmi Rd. Should also be available at Aru Oil Traders at the begining of Paud Rd.

Thanks Raccoon. I also got the names of a few other shops from the earlier posts of yours, R2D2, amit etc. I will see what I can get. If not, I will try to get Mobil Super XHP 10W40 (I hope I will be able to get it directly from Raka oil) for my Swift and then probably change it every 6 months instead of the 1 year interval.

Never buy oils at Shell petrol stations. Best to buy it directly from the Shell distributor. I got a SHU 4 litre can from Heera Oil Corp. Near Adinath Shop Complex, Pune-satara Road, Swargate, Pune: 411037, Tel. No.24262473.

It was Rs 2750 last year. So you may want to call to check the latest prices.

Cheers!

PS - Heera is the Shell Distributor. In fact Shell's India office pointed me to them.

Buy it from an absolutely reliable dealer. Else buy it from the Shell pump and don't mind the MRP. Better be safe than sorry!
