hi guys i am posting this question on behalf of my friend. he has got 2008 new shape honda accord. now he was once cheated by the honda A.S.S. people so he wants to go for a service with my mechanic. i found out from honda A.S.S. that they use 0W-30 fully sythetic engine oil(factory fill) in honda accord.
unfortunately this grade oil was not available with city motors mumbai.they suggested 5w-50 or 0w-40.
now he has got 0W-40 mobil 1 from them . do you people think he should go for 0w40 or he should go for 5w40(which is my recommendation).
he is still not opened the can so he can exchange it.
please guys let me know what you feel?

New SHU stocks

Folks,

Helix Ultra 5w-40 in the new packaging (Feb '10 mfrd) is available at Heera Oil Corporation Pune. The only other thing that's new is the price..retails at a little over Rs 4K for 4L compared to approx Rs 3200 printed price for the old stock.

Cheers!

Which Mobil 1 grade sythentic oil is good for hyundai Accent petrol model?
I went to Captial Hyundai and sector 63, Noida for service and they have Mobil 1 0W-40 available with the packing date as April 2007.
Should I go for it or purchase some other grade from the market and give it to them to put in the car? If I need to purchase, is there any dealer available where I can get genuine stuff in Noida?

4K for 4L! That is getting a bit stiff. I picked 4+1 litres last month for around 3900. All of a sudden they jack prices up by 25%.

@Cesc: yes, indeed this is true. If I remember rightly it Rs.4094 for 4 litres. I guess Mobil 1 will be similar (say +-5%). To answer MDesai I think a synth is required, esp if you want to stretch the change to 10000km/12 months, which is now permissible.

you may want to consult your owners manual to check on the grades required for the engine at a given ambient temperature. Dont experiment with oil as it could be detrimental to the engine.

The old stock dates back 2-3 years to between end 2007 and early 2008. so if you want to get it at a better price go in for the old stock if you're not particular about it. And remember to buy oil at the distributor. You will save quite a bit.

I picked it from a authorised Shell distributor here. In fact he is a friend of my brother-in-law so I think I got the best price around. As far as I remember the date on it wasn't 2007 or 2008. I have 1/2 litre in the boot of my car (the car needed 4.5l so I kept the rest for next time) so I will go check again but I am 99% sure it wasn't from 2007 or 2008.

BTW is the new packing more of grey looking (the color of the can) with a Ferrari Logo? I mention that because that is what I picked.

If you know the distributor thru your family it is possible that you got an even more competitive price.

Both the new and old cans are dark grey and have Ferrari logos on them. One thing I noticed was the old cans had captions 'approved by Ferrari' and the new ones 'used by Ferrari' right under the logo. Also the new stock is made in Qatar and old in Singapore.

Regards,

Regards,
All right. Now this might sound funny - The can I bought is made in Singapore and says 'Used by Ferrari' right under the logo. Bit of both worlds eh? The month and year of import is mentioned as October 2008 (guess I was wrong about that). The MRP is Rs. 1,041 (on the 1 litre can).

Picked up Mobil1 from Speed-a-way today. Cost me Rs 885/l. Last July I'd paid 800, so its up by about 10%. Mr.Prasad was quite confident that 25-30k km between oil changes is perfectly all right. I know some people change at 10k km and I think that is quite unnecessary. But is it ok to run it to 30k km?
Also got a nice Mobil1 decal.
The guys there get pretty excited when you tell them you're a TBHian!

How often do you change your oil?
@Abeer, I think oil packed in Apr '07 is way too old. The engine oil bible http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html says that engine oil has a shelf life of 3 years.

It is not ok to run it beyond mfr suggested drain intervals and that applies to any oil regardless whether it is mineral or synthetic.

Please do go by what these dealers tell you, they have nothing to lose if your engine starts giving problem coz you didnt drain the oil for 30K kms. In fact given the general tendency to avoid oil changes as long as possible (thinking it is ok to extend intervals) these guys play on that line of thinking to sell the much more expensive synthetic oil.

So they say - you pay x times more for synth so you get x times the drain interval...which appeals to most people who venture into the world of synthetics after all they believe it justifies the cost. Unfortunately it is plain hogwash.

The rule is - if you wish to extend drain intervals on synthetic, dont do it - just go back to mineral and stick to recommended guidelines.

Cheers!

That would be about right, I think. Also, has anyone noticed that fully synthetics tend to look dirty very soon. Perhaps it would be advisable to change the filter midway if you're planning to drain at 15k km.
I got this decal with the Mobil1 cans. Think its worth putting on my car? Or would I look like a poser?
