Shell Helix Ultra costs 750-800 per Litre in Mumbai depending upon where you buy it from.

OWS (going to try this during next oil change for OHC) and was quoted 3200 for 4 Litre Pack by Prakash Auto, Andheri.

Sumeet, can you please share contact details of Prakash auto. Also, do they stock other OWS products ? Did you contact the shell dealer i told you about?

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Had always used the MASS default engine oils for both my SX4 and Swift VDi

Recently changed to Shell Rimula R4 15W40 API CI for my swift (Model year 2009) @250/L against MRP:260/- at a Shell Bunk

SX4 ZXi (P) Model Year 2007: Today picked up a 4L can of Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 API SM/CF for INR:3000/- against MRP:4400/- Manufactured in Malaysia and month/year of import is Dec 2011.

Also, tried looking out for Mobil 1/Mobil Delvac1/Castrol Edge, but none had them in stock!!!

I am also surprised. I tried several Mobil1 dealers but no one was willing to sell a 4L jar below Rs 3800/- in Calcutta. And the person who quoted the minimum price specifically said that I should have to wait for a month to get the complimentary Mobil1 shirt, which comes free with every can.

Where did you buy idemitsu? I checked here in chandigarh idemitsu is not available. talked to savita chemicals, and even after many mails exchanged they cant seem to arrange a bottle of their own Super Ultra XL (10W30) in chandigarh.

I am talking of 0W30. Their oils are Honda OE so I just got the workshop to supply it during the service.

If I am not mistaken, Idemitsu is semi-synthetic oil. It is hard to imagine Honda charging 1K less than market price for an equivalent grade fully synthetic oil (like Mobil 1). Toyota IMO does the same thing. They have their own brand of oil which they pass off as synthetic.

Dont want to go to Honda Dealer that is why was trying to source the oil from outside. Anyways, having been unable to source Idemitsu or Savita, got a pack of Total Quartz 7000 10W40. I hope it will be ok?

Both semi-synth and Fully synth are available at Honda. You are right that toyota also use idemitsu which is made by savita chemicals in India.

Idemitsu / Savita have both Synth and Semi-synth. I was unable to source Mobil 1 0W40 below 4.4k so after one round I decided to go for the Idemitcu 0W30 at about 3.4k or so. The service receipt clearly states 0W30.

As Guptavis said Idemitsu has both a semi- and full synth. The viscosity of the cold oil will tell any experienced person whether it is 10W ot 0/5W. Honda recommends six monthly change for semi- while allows annual for full-synth.

Let me add that we are also going OTT about the lubes. Any decent lube with the correct API rating will do.

@Dr.Dre This is pretty good price you got it at. Had to spend 4.5k on the Shell Helix Ultra last October for my SX4. My service is due next month, can you please let me know where you got this from? Would be really helpful.

So, I am really enjoying the synthetic oil switch over!
So its been 22k since I switched to synthetic @74k. Engine seems to be doing great (knock on wood).
I changed oil once at 82k (8k for first change) and then @96k (14k, ~1year).
Engine feels smoother after the oil change, and I consistently got 1-1.5 km/l more mileage after switching to synthetic for the past 20000+ km

So, for those of you with old cars (60-70k or higher), no issues to switch to synthetic from mineral - go right ahead :-) I recommend not to flush the car's engine though.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Good news guys!!

For my 4th service at 20K of my Gypsy, I changed to Shell Helix Ultra fully synthetic. I also changed the gear oil, transmission oil, front and rear differential oil to Total 80W-90 GL-4 grade. I filled petrol to the brim at 20085kms after returning from the service and yesterday I filled up to auto-cutoff at 20541kms. The fuel that went in was exactly 33.99ltrs.

This makes an average of 13.4+ltrs in city driving. I have been driving a little aggressively on the pedal to check the effect of the oil change. Now thats an increase of 2.91kms per liter over my earlier city average and I think quiet good for a Gypsy?

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

I saw an advertisement for Mobil1 Synthetic 0W40 that claims operating range of minus 40 degrees to 37 Degrees Celcius.
37 degrees sounds too low for Indian weather. Does it mean that the oil will deteriorate faster if left parked in the hot sun? Is it better to switch to 5W50? (The weather doesn't get that cold here)

0W40 synthetic can very comfortably take ambients of upto 40 C but it depends on the engine.

If you believe that your engine needs thicker oil by all means go in for 5W-50 synth. But your owners manual will confirm what viscosity you need to use for a particular ambient temp. Base your decision on what your car mfr prescribes, not by the ad which is for a particular vehicle/engine. What is important is the hot temp i.e. the value to the right of the '-'.

For e.g. my car's mfr now recommends using 5w-30 mineral (!!) or 5w-40 synth in all temps ranging from -15 C to >40 C. Modern engines do NOT need thick oils and higher viscosity creates resistance in engine ops.

Cheers!
