Gulf is also a good option. All their r&d is done here for all over the world. Their 5w30 mineral is SM rated and they have just released a semi synthetic 5w30 which is SN rated.

Have you tried this oil ? Recently i changed oil in my Santro to Shell Helix HX7 10w40, the FNG recommended me this Gulf Semi synthetic 5w30 oil. Since this was unheard i preferred sticking to known brand. Have covered more than 1000 kms and i am happy with performance of Shell Helix HX7

I will be trying it in the future for sure. It will mostly be Mobil Super 1000 or this Gulf for my next to next change.

The new Gulf semi is not even on their website yet. Besides, the 2 grades being discussed are generally for different engines. Are you sure your cars preferred grade is the one you used?

I should also mention that the local MGP store I buy all my parts from now stocks Total 0w20 for the Marutis Thats just way too thin for our conditions I feel. They said this is what the company now recommends and has tied up with.

Mine is a May 2006 Manufactured model, earlier hyundai recommended 15w40 Servo oil with condition of 5000 kms or 6 months whichever is earlier. At present the hyundai website recommends "Indian Oil Servo /Shell Helix" as detailed below.
  • Grade: API SM
  • Specification: 5w30
  • Frequency: Replace every 10,000 kms

Link: http://www.customercare.hyundai.co.i...Petrol-23.aspx

However my running is less so i prefer changing oil(Mineral/Semi-synthetic) every 5000 kms or 6 Months. Current ODO 592xx Kms

For 0w20 there are bhpians using this oil in their petrol Ciaz http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/offici...ml#post3849751

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

I haven't see the Hyundai kind of recommendations anywhere else, specifically the quoted part below and thank you for the link:
"Cars sold before 15th April 2012 should follow 10,000 km or 6 months ( whichever comes earlier) schedule.
Cars sold after 15th April 2012 should follow 10,000 km or 1 year ( whichever comes earlier) schedule."
I wonder what is different in the former cars that calls for oil change every 6 months in them, I thought drain intervals were more of an oil technology thing where modern cars are concerned.
When one considers the number of cars on the road, moving from 5000km/6 months to 10000kms/12 months is a huge beneficial impact on resource consumption and environmental impact of disposal of used oil.

Crazy reco. Also, sold and not manufactured - just trying to save their owner's manual recos. I say with modern oils 10,000km or 12 months is more than adequate. Both my Honda's as well as my son's Honda City are on that. Earlier my Hyundai Accent & Santro were on the same regime.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Hi All,

I own a Swift (P) K Series 2010 model, 20,000 kms only. I have been using GS Caltex Kixx G1 5W30 SN oil for the last two years and have been pretty satisfied with it. It costs ~Rs 1450. The oils is semi-synth and almost colorless which means it is high quality.

I came across Bosch Fusion SL 5W30 semi-synth oil which is much cheaper around Rs 999! It is SL grade which is lower than SN but maruti requires SG+ so I am good. I am considering using it this time.

Has anyone tried Bosch engine oils? Are they good?

Thanks!

Stick to the GS Caltex or you can try these:

Mobil 1 ESP Formula. SN rated.
Mobil Super 3000. SM rated.
Mobil Super 1000. SN rated.
Gulf X. SN rated.

All are 5w30.

Thanks! Could you please share your views on GS Caltex and Bosch oils? How about other Bosch products: Coolant and Brake Oil? Which inexpensive 75W90 gear oil would you recommend? It is very hard to find 75W90 from open market!

I haven't used bosch oils yet. I would generally go for a company that specialises in oils so you know their research goes only into that. Bosch is huge but like you said their oil doesn't have the latest rating.

I will be getting the motul 75w90 gear oil soon. Will give feedback on that.

Just day before I got my coolant drained and replaced with wurth coolant. Its a very good one.

Is Motul 75W90 synthetic? Is it worth spending almost 2.5 times on sythetic gear oil? I believe Servo/HP are available for ~Rs 800 for 2.5 ltrs.

Its a semi synthetic oil. Right now I'm running the mineral mobil 80w90. I just feel it takes a little while to warm up at cold starts.

I will know the price tomorrow. Got 3l of mobil for around 600 last time.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

The absence of any colour or the presence of it has nothing to do with 'quality' of any oil

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Indian made whisky is often sold as "Blended with scotch" - a drop in a barrel is all it takes to legitimately make that claim.

Does anyone know if semi-synth means anything better than that? IMO it is just marketing to justify a higher price point, but I am open to correction.

In all this oil business I believe that spurious oil is still a big issue in India, and the risk of exposure to that increases with higher priced oils that aren't widely distributed.

That being the case, is it safer to remain with the recommended MGO 20W 40 than opt for any synthetic oil, where this difference is the highest - even 5W 40 in some cases?

But the API grade is lowest for the former and highest for the latter.
