Huh? Most oils yo buy from market are lying in shops for long periods of time. As long as its used before the "best before" date, its okay.

In a diesel car after 20kms of running the oil is black . So never have to worry about transparency

I would like to thank all people who recommended the synthetic way. I added 3.8 liters of Mobil1 5W-50 to my car after 10k kms (after I bought it brand new) and the difference in lubrication is mind blowing. I have to stick my ear to decipher any sound from the engine bay when I am in the drivers seat at idle.

You're right abt that expiry bit, of course. Yet - using an engine oil for the 1st time leading up close to its expiry date - considering that its going to have to perform in a car for 5000 x n kms starting from the end of its life-cycle may not yield as desired a result as when the oil is newer.

not really, swift vdi started turnin a very minuscule of grey when at 600 km, ofcource its a brand new engine

shall update as i add more kms, and funny part whatever the green filter thingie that comes with this engine, needs replacement only at 20 k intervals.

again to quote car bible, oils turning color (petrol engine) shows that oil is actually doing its job

Not over a couple of months, man. A year or two...yes it may deteriorate but shorter periods wont make a difference.

Glad to see another happy convert, moralfibre. Every car guy must use synthetic; not only are the benefits significant but I also dont feel bad about red-lining on an everyday basis

akshay, the synthetic oils in market are API-CF4 only for diesel, though they meet highest standards for petrol(API-SM).
I suggest till a API-CH4 or API-CI synthetic oil gets available use you castrol GTX Diesel(Remember, not GTD) which is API-CI 15W40.
Its the highest grade diesel oil I have seen in the market.

API-SM? SM is for spark engines i.e. petrol? What is the C rating. For example Castrol edge is API-SM/CF4
The C rating should be higher or equal to what your user manual recommends.
For example scorpio's manual says API-CH4 minimum, so you cant go for castrol edge over there.
So make sure that the oil is rated higher than what your user manual states.

This means you get get a cheap engine oil used by trucks from any of the small shops and it will meet standards. It will cost you 500 odd for 4 liters.

On a more serious note you can easily go for any of the common synthetic oils like Castrol EDGE or mineral oils like Castrol GTD.
The top end oil which you can get for your car(650rs/4 liters) is the castrol GTX diesel. I have an indica which needs similar spec oil(API-CD), but I pamper her with top of the line castrol GTX diesel (API-CI) as 100rs more for every oil change is not a big deal.

thanks, for the info but the fix is i dont trust castrol that much, the market is flooded with counterfeit castrol oils.
