Because their MGO oils do not have any 40 weight, I allowed them to fill Mobil 1 0w40 synthetic and found it rather good.

This year also it looks unlikely I will be able to buy oil and take the car for service. I think I will let them repeat last year's service and oil change. But the only hitch is I usually keep some left over oil after the change for any future top ups. Not possible now because they measure and pour the oil from a large barrel. Is there any reliable online source to buy a litre of Mobil 1? I see some shops with Mobil boards in my vicinity but am not sure about them. I don't want to go to GP Road under the circumstances.
You may opt for Amazon: https://www.amazon.in/dp/B00SFNO0UK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_JWAE49BPZA3KTP1M2DXN or Boodmo: https://boodmo.com/catalog/part-engi...40_4l-52026159

Hope you have seen this thread.

Skoda VW Oils (Skoda / VW Group Engine Oils)

Perhaps just need to get the relevant spec oil for the car from a Castrol dealer incase you are doing it outside VW service center.

They left me thoroughly shattered (confused). I got hold of this document listing VW 50X.XX conformant oils across. I see castrol edge there and also professional OE which I probably can't source. Here is the doc

Seems to be what you are looking for.

This engine drinks oil after a while, best not to use expensive oil, use the cheapest one that meets the spec.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

I hope this is the correct thread.

I've read through the Duster 1.3L Turbo Petrol's user guide and maintenance manual, however, I'm a little confused with the Engine oil grade suggested there. It suggests 15W40. Now I was under the impression that this particular grade is primarily for Diesel engines! Please forgive my lack of knowledge about the Engine oil grade, but for Petrol engines, isn't 5W30 the most common grade? I've a NA 1.2L Petrol Tigor which uses 5W30 grade. Does the inclusion of a Turbocharger in the Petrol engine, warrant a change in Engine oil grade as well?

This is the older spec of VW without DPF etc. The oil you picked is an excellent one.

There is also a Renault spec RN.some long number

Check your manual for what grade of oil is recommended as an alternate if Renault oil isn’t available. Also duster owners I know have used the synthetic oil that Renault recommends for Fluence with excellent results so lighter weight synthetic rather than 15w40 mineral oils can be used.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

I dont know how much these VW specs matter. On my car there is a sticker saying 506.00. This is for cars with a long life oil change intervals but my car does not have the long life sensor.

I use Castrol Edge Titanium FST 5/40 which has specs of 505.01/507.00. I have been running on this oil for 200,000 km.
I have used Magnatec, Mobil1 and Elf once each in 240,000 km..

I buy 40 liters at a time for the cheapest price. Before Covid, I had 2 oil changes a year.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

We got to watch for, there are 3 different types within Castrol Edge: Edge SN, Edge A3B4 and Edge Fluid titanium. I realized only Fluid Titanium is 505.01 conformant, if that matters. All three are 5W-40 oils.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

I'm getting the oil changed on both my Amaze VX AT as well as Santro Xing.

What oil brands should I go for and what spec?
I usually use semi-synthetic for the Santro since its used in the city primarily and fully synthetic for the Amaze since its run 50-50 city and highway.

P. S I hardly see any difference when I change the oil on my Amaze. Any ideas on what could help?
Thanks in advance!

Amaze - Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 A3B4
Santro - Shell HX8 or Shell Taxi 5w30 A3B4

(or just pour shell helix ultra for both cars, though you may not want to use costlier full synthetic oils in a beater)

Thanks Hserus for your quick reply!
Quick question, why haven't you recommended Mobil-1/Idemitsu? Any particular reason?

Shouldn't it be the other way around? A beater is expected to be put under more stress due to frequent start-stop, more kms etc and a good quality oil should help in increasing engine life and make cost of ownership lower due to less frequent oil changes and possibly lower maintenance cost due to less engine wear. Is this thought process correct?

You need an a3b4 oil. Plenty of 5w40 a3b4 you can use for both cars. The two shell ones i mentioned are the only 5w30 a3b4 oils around.

Buy a decent a3b4 5w40 and use them for both cars, search amazon and get any reputed brand oil that suits your pocket.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Got the Honda City 2016 i-DTEC serviced recently.

It had been more than an year since last service. But hardly any kms run due to lockdown and being the third car. Honda uses Idemitsu oil.

I saw the barrels and saw no mention of it being synthetic or mineral. It just says Honda Diesel oil #2.

I could find absolutely zero difference in performance or NVH. Still as gravelly and unrefined when revved as usual. Not consistent with other user reviews.

Does anyone think I should source my own oil?

Need advice choosing while considering that this car never does 10,000 KMs. It's always time based. Hardly ever crosses 5000kms. Is this supposed to affect my choice of oil in anyway?
