Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Have acquired a barely run-in safari dicor 3.0l Lx 4x2 recently from a friend.
Due to prolonged non-use/ occasional use, looking forward to replace old oil(s).
From the thread, picked the opinion to use Amsoil 5W40 turbo truck if its got to be synthetic ( And ordered through amazon)- however could some safari owner attest to efficacy of engine protection by using a "thinner" oil as compared to 15w40 suggested by OEM.

Safari 3.0 is a heavy engine, wouldn't 15w40 mineral provide better protection than 5w40 of the synthetic?

Also the owners manual state 2 different transmission oils to be used for gearbox and transfer case separately -

ITEM---------------------COMPANY--BRAND------------------------------------------QTY
1) GEAR BOX (G-76) ----- HPCL ----- HP Gear Oil XP 75W90 -----1.6 Litre
2) TRANSFERCASE ------HPCL ----- HP-Automatic Transmission Fluid Type A -----1.2 Litres------???

Could someone confirm if the Lx does have transfer case? and if actually two different grade oil(s) are needed or a common 75w90 would do?

Thanks
Spark

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Congratulations. Your Safari will be quite happy on Shell Rimula R4, Valvoline Premium Plus or Mobil Delvac MX 15w40, they're excellent mineral oils, rated at CI4+ (Amsoil is CK4 but yeah your Safari will perform just fine with Mineral).

Drain out and replace everything else (brake / gear oil, coolant, rear differential etc), according to the specification.

Gear Oil -

HP XP gear oil (extreme pressure) is 80w90 - looks like a multipurpose (gear and differential) oil.

https://www.hplubricants.in/products...-oil-xp-80w-90

The specs it supports -

API GL-5
MIL-L 2105 D
EP Type GL – 5 Level of IS: 1118:1992 (Re-affirmed 2011) specifications

A comparable - and far better - oil - is Motul Motylgear 75w90 which I'm using in my Scorpio

https://www.motul.com/in/en/products/motylgear-75w90
API GL-5 ; API GL-4 ; MIL-L-2105D

HP EP 75w90 (also Extreme Pressure) is API GL4 and mineral but as your manual suggests XP ..

https://www.hplubricants.in/products...il-ep-75w-90-f

This is plain API GL4. Check your manual for what standard / spec is required not just the viscosity (xWy)

Automatic Transmission Fluid is different - your Safari requires a General Motors Type A Suffix A spec oil like the brand you mentioned.

https://www.hplubricants.in/products...ission-fluid-a

Other brands are easily available, this is a quite generic spec, with type A suffix A usually abbreviated as "TASA fluid".

https://www.amazon.in/SHELL-SPIRAX-T...dp/B07PQRWMMT/

https://www.amazon.in/Valvoline-Flui...dp/B08RC7LDPG/

https://www.amazon.in/Bosch-F002H237...dp/B01H078868/

You can go with Shell or Valvoline eyes closed, excellent brands.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Hserus, many thanks for your diligent advise.
Changed oil order from Amsoil to Remula H4 and looking to source other parts.
Would you suggets using a standard engine flush at this time or using diesel as flush to wipe out any old deposits?
How about radiator flush?

Regards

Unless the oil is very dirty (Diesel engine oil gets black that is fine .. is any dirty solid matter sticking to the dip stick when you check?) you don’t need a flush.

If your radiator has salt deposits or rust then get it cleaned by a radiator mechanic don’t use a flush. Use only distilled water to dilute your coolant if it needs to be mixed with water, don’t use tap, can, RO water.

Dear Sir,

I have been using synthetic oil in my Honda City at the Honda authorised service centres which used to sell Honda Fully Synthetic Oil SM 0W30 VTECLEV which used to come in 4 Ltr Cans. That used to be very reassuring as there was no chance of contaminations. Then Honda stopped selling cans(though they are still selling cans in countries like Pakistan with exact 3.6 Ltr ones) siting waste of the rest of the oils in 4 Ltr cans and started supplying to the dealers Idemitsu make Barrels of 210 Ltr of Honda VTECLEV SN 0W-20 SYN oil from which you have to draw oil into loose cans raising lot of contamination probabilities.

In my last service I found a new type of Idemitsu oil Barrel of specification 0W20 TYPE 2.0 E.O. with no SN/SM etc. specifications. I don't know what is this oil. Is it a cheap or economy oil as the spec has TYPE 2.0 E.O.

Why are they changing oils so many times? And why aren't they selling synthetic oil cans of 3.6 Ltr like in other countries?

API SN, ILSAC GF5 according to this https://www.loyalparts.com/shop/hond...ull-synthetic/

There is an Idemitsu available on Amazon and in oil stores that fits this spec
https://www.amazon.in/PITZO-ZEPRO-Ad...dp/B07MTK97HG/

Many of the other 0w20 in the market are specific for petrol cars so be sure of what you are buying, check the can for any marking that says petrol specific, if you have a diesel.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

I know about the availability of synthetic oils for online purchase.

But, I wanted to know about the 2 engine oils Honda uses at their service stations:

1) Honda VTECLEV SN 0W-20 SYN oil

2) Honda 0W20 TYPE 2.0 E.O.

Are they different or same ?

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Question about oil grade for 1.2 kappa (2008)

The 2008 owners manual suggests oil grades, 5w30,5w40,15w40 and 20w50

The 2021 owners manual for 1.2 kappa requires sn plus 0w20.

How can such a wide grade be used for an engine. I'm sure the only changes to the engine have been variable valve timing i.e kappa2; rest everything remains same.

Does this mean I can safely use 0w20 in my i10?
Just bouncing my thoughts.
Currently running the cheapest oil I found which is Mobil 1000 5w30.

Use that or use a 5w40 for such an old engine - the seals are likely to be worn enough that a thicket oil even a 15w40 one - might be a better idea at this point.

The vteclev as it’s name suggests is for their ivtec petrol engines. Not sure of the other one - are Honda idtec diesel cars also specifying 0w20?

My car has i-VTEC petrol engine.

The oil used for Honda diesel cars is Honda 3D oil.

Any 0w20 api sn oil will do in that case. Shell Amsoil Mobil etc have many options.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Hi all,

I live in Delhi and have a Hyundai Creta Petrol Automatic 2018 pre-facelift model. It's been 15 months since the last service, which was also the second proper service. The car is not used much and has been driven only 8200 kms yet, with 4000 kms done since last service.

I am planning to get the car serviced later this week and would love to get some guidance on the engine oil. So far, the recommended mineral oil 'API SM - SAE 5 W 30' has been used. Does it make sense to go for synthetic oil given the low car usage/mileage? If yes, then which synthetic oil should I go for?

Strangely, the car manual has no info about the oil grades. It mentions page no. in the index but the page is blank! Hyundai website mentions SHELL as the only synthetic option but no mention of the oil grade.
https://www.hyundai.com/in/en/connec...les/engine-oil

Cheers!

This means any good 5w30 will do. Buy whatever suits your budget.

Thanks for your reply, hserus! I have shortlisted three 5W30 brands for my CRETA PETROL (2015-18). Which one would you recommend? The car has been be driven 8200 kms in over 3 years and annual usage is 4-5K now.

1. Amsoil XL Fully Synthetic - https://amzn.to/3gS6a2F
2. Mobil 1 API SN Fully Synthetic - https://amzn.to/2TQJmIL
3. Shell Helix HX8 5W-30 API SN Plus Fully Synthetic - https://amzn.to/2SKcPUJ

I also came across a previous post of yours about the Amsoil distributor (Jatin) in Delhi. I called up Jatin to enquire about Amsoil Signature oil and he told me it is currently unavailable. More importantly, he mentioned that it's priced at around Rs.1800/- for a gallon, which is substantially lower than the prices online (Rs.3600/- approx.)! Is the price difference justified given Jatin is a wholesaler or too good to be true?

Shell HX8 or Shell Helix Taxi (semi synthetic) are excellent oils and your Hyundai will run quite well with them. My wife's i10 runs on that just fine.

Amsoil - go for this one if you really want it. Yes distributor rates are likely to be far cheaper than retail rates. If he has unsold stocks he needs to clear he'll definitely pass on more part of his margin to customers. So ask him if this one below (signature series 5w30) is available.
