@nitrous: Thanks for the info. But I found in this thread that flushing the engine is not mandatory. You can live with it and do another oil change after 5k. Some old engines do have problems after flushing as it can expose some hidden leaks. I hope that won't be valid in my case. What are the issues if I don't flush my engine and just do a normal oil and filter change?

you can flush the engine but it is not necessary. Even in Mobil1 site FAQs it is mentioned that engine flushing is not required.

Any idea where we can get Mobil1/Shell Helix/Castrol in Kolkata? I am looking for fully synthetic and not semi-synthetic stuff.

you can PM shuvc or Razor4077 as they had found a dealer for Shell in Kol. Razor should be able to tell as he will be changing to synthetic once Phoenix covers 1000 Kms. Valvoline is not on your list? any reason? Is it not good?

Thanks for the info. They have found a Shell dealer near Bangur/Lake Town. We are planning to buy together to attract some good discounts. Valvoline is definitely good and highly recommended. I just missed it

Goto the local vendor and see if you can get castrol flushing oil, there are other brands also, usually they wont have small quantity cans and will fill from huge drums and give.

Oil will be something like your sunflower oil in terms of color (clear) and viscosity, and hence ensure that you dont drive around with it or raise the rpm too much.

@ razor: i was referring to things that can go wrong with flush and not synth oil.

yes synth oil at 1 lakh km will not help much either, so imho it might be waste of money, better idea would be a semi synth.

I changed my engine oil to Mobil1 supersyn 5w50 when the car completed 8000kms . Now the car has run 16000kms . I have two questions:
1.) When should I change my oil ? Some mechanics say that super syn is good for atleast 20,000kms .
2.) How can I check myself if the oil doesnt require a change? The way mechanics do by touching, smelling and all that?

Ideally change between 10-12 k kms

Color, if its turning real dark or consistency ie if the oil goes thicker/goovy, high time to change
hope this helps

cheers

I am going to give my car for the 20K service in about 2 weeks. I enquired with Bimal Motors, Bangalore, about the Mobil1 synthetic oil for the Baleno and they said it'll cost me Rs 1000 per litre and that I would need 4 litres for it. Also, they said that it has to be changed after about 20,000 kms. Are the rates and the change period mentioned correct?

The rates really seem to be very high. Regarding the change period I would suggest that you change the oil filter after 10000Km and then both oil and oil filter at 20000Km.

I agree with Black Pearl. The rate is pretty high. It should be within 650-800 per litre. Just check up with other dealers. You can consider other brands like Shell Helix/Castrol/Valvoline.

So you mean to say that change to Synthetic will not bring about much difference to a 90+K run engine. Why so ?
