My Ikon runs on semi-synthetic currently while my sumo runs on Castrol GTD(mineral).
The sumo's engine oil capacity is around 7 litres and doesn't make sense to feed her synthetic because:
1)Currently healthy, the engine's run 188,000 kms and Im not too keen about keeping it.
2)In a rare event of something happening,Sumo engines and engine spares cost peanuts.

Similarly, Maruti's 800 engine is very cheap and so are the engine spares.
The suzuki engine is very reliable too.
But, the engine oil capacity is tiny. So, the choice is urs.

So, if U want to indulge ur baby, spoil it with Fully synthetic 5W50 from Mobil1/OWS/Shell helix Ultra.Costs around Rs.750 per litre.
Cheaper option: 10W40 Castrol GTX Magnatec Semi-synth (or similar)costs around Rs.250 per litre
Hey thanx for that info bro, guess i will stick to normal or would go for Semi-synth for the next change. Anyway i have no plans to change my car for now or atleast for another 3 or 4 years down the lane.

Once a year should be on the safe side. Remember, oil also ages with time.

I just have one query. For Corolla, I think the recommended is 5W30. At my 10K service, the oil was changed by dealer only and it was mineral. Should I change to synthetic (I have synthetic in my old Corsa and appreciate its benefits) and what spec (toyota says 5w30 for Corolla).

5W30 is suitable for hill stations like darjeeling and shimla.
5W50 is apt for Delhi's(or rest of India's) weather.

I remember 5W30 for sure in the Toyota's owner's manual. Yet when I went for 10K service, I think they used Toyota Genuine Motor Oil (TGMO) for Toyota cars which was 15W40. The question is: for my 20K service around Feb 08, should I use synthetic 5W30 or go with TGMO (15w40 MINERAL). I think Mobil has 2 synthetics in India--Mobil 1 0W-40 and Mobil 1 5W-40. Really do not know much about grades and oils, except perhaps I should try out synthetici n my Corolla too.

Hey Guys,

I changed over to Mobile 1 Super Sync 5W -50...couple of days back. I used 'Abro' engine flush. The OEM spec was 15W - 40. the transformation was an eye opener to say the least. On a cold start-up my car used to start at 1300rpm & settle at the idling 900 after about 5-7 mins. Now...it starts at 1000rpm & comes to the idling rpm in 2 mins!! Also, i can feel the reserve of power at lower engine speeds...she is not straining at ANY rpm...engine noise is at an all-time low (car had done 10,000 km on OEM oil). All i can say is WOOOOOW!!I'm loving it!

Engine flushing necessary before filling synthetic oil??

Folks,

My OHC has crossed 80k kms mark and after going through this thread am very keen to use "synthetic" oil but since my car has done 80k kms, not very sure if i can flush the engine before going for the synthetic??

so can i avoid flushing? or is it very necessasry thing to do before going for the synthetic oil??
