Just got delivery of Petronas Syntium 3000 fully synthetic oil (5W40).
4 litres cost Rs.2600. Will be using this in my Lancer... will post a review after a while. Haven't heard much about Petronas (usually it's Mobil, Shell or Castrol!). Thanks to Jiggy for sourcing this for me.

I don't know about setting the record straight finally. This article certainly doesn't do it.

He raises good points but does not answer them.

1. Additive package: indeed, if the synthetic oil's additive package is not good, then the oil will become "exhausted" even when its lubricant properties are still perfectly alright. He doesn't tell you anything about how to tackle this. he could have researched synthetic oils and found out which ones have good additive packages and recommended thm.

2. If he is only now thinking of extending to 5000 mile change intervals with synthetic, he is very far behind the curve. THe only people who stick to 3000mile intervals with synthetics are paranoid obsessive compulsives who just can't trust anything. my Lotus has 7500 mile intervals with synthetic. I stick to that. saying that he is "leaning towards 5000 miles" is hardly inline with finally setting the record straight.

I use Mobil 1 in all my cars, unless the manufacturer recommends something specific, eg, Lotus recommends a certain type of Havoline oil and BMW recommends its own oil (made for BMW by Castrol) that has a very impressive additive package that lets you run 15,000 miles per change.

On the MX-5, I run Mobil 1 in the engine, and redline synthetics of different types in the shift turret, gearbox and differential.

Its an article by an armchair critic. No research, just little google here, little google there.
I would take this with a truckload of salt

@razor4077: I own a 2001 Lancer SLXi ... I bought it used early this year and have loved every moment of driving ... the odo is at 64k right now

I plan to use synthetic oil during the next service which is due at 66k kms ... mebbe another two months down the line ... I run close to 1500 kms every month in the city + highway ... occasional long trips make it a total of 20000+ kms in a year (I ran my Ikon for 30k kms last year and Lancer is going to be no different ) ...

Is synthetic oil a good option for the Lancer? how much does it help with respect to the FE and performance? Also, I read that with synthetic oil I do not need to worry about changing the oil for 10k+ kms ... how true is that?

Awaiting your response ... other folks in T-BHP may also please post your valuable suggestions ... look forward to hear from all ... Appreciate your time in this regard

@wanderlust, U can use 5W50 grade from Mobil1,OWS,Shell, Castrol in super synthetic form.
Do stick to the 10k oil change interval.

Google Uncle says this is a motorcycle engine oil. We might need bikers' experience here.
