Very cool. These MRF Legend Cross Ply Nylon Tyres were standard fare in the Fiat - Premiers and Ambassadors through the 1980’s and 1990’s. Must be really hard to get these days and the main thing is you got tyres from the 2022 production run which is a fantastic stroke of luck.

Nothing quite like a nice set of authentic OEM tyres on these classic cars.

I wonder if these days one can get a set of those legendary Dunlop 2001 Radials. They were the first good soft compound and rounded shoulder radial tyre upgrade for our Ambys and Fiats in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Excellent grip while taking curves in the hills as I remember.

The speeds at which Amby used to travel with these tyres would now make people squirm

Wish they made them with OWL or white walls. The inserts are quite expensive and peels off sometimes. I guess one should be thankful that the tyre itself if available.

True that. These ply tyres are manufactured rarely in batches in Limited quantity. Bhpian Funkykar procured these tyres for me costing around 3800 rupees for each.

Other than these, JK radials of size 165 80 R15 are the only other option for Ambassador. These tyres too are in stock only with few dealers costing 3500 per tyre.

I could manage to get 5.20-14 size MRF Legend Ply tyres for my Padmini a year ago. These tyres look so good on classics!

Yeah, thin white wall tyres are the best looking ones!! This tyre came with the Amby when I got her home two years back!

My Maruti Gypsy Soft top is now 8 years old. (June 2014). Absolutely bone stock. When I bought it, in December 2021, it had a set of Ceat Rhino stock F78-15 tube type tyres on it. These were old (2016) and had hardened because of low usage.

So I got a set of lovely brand new MRF Estate F78-15 Stock OEM Nylon Cross Ply butyl tube type tyres for it. These are rare as hen’s teeth in the bigger urban centres and cities. The main demand for these is in semi rural and rural India. But I had them brought in to Bangalore through a friend of mine who is connected with MRF.

Lovely tyres. And when one fills them with Nitrogen to the right level of pressure -20PSI as has been recommended by Maruti Suzuki for the Gypsy, and indeed, is reinforced by way of a sticker on the driver side dashboard on the right side (usually hidden by the door when closed), they are very very pliant and easy to handle and the Gypsy is easy to turn and steer even at parking speeds despite the lack of power steering.

Im so happy with my stock Gypsy with its stock accoutrements, it is absolutely indescribable.

I have a Skoda Kushaq 1.5 DSG with 205/55 R17 tyres by MRF that were initially provided with the new car. After my first wheel alignment at the Skoda Service centre at 7200kms, I noticed that my front 2 wheels started to have outer edge wear out strangely. It has been 15000 Km now and 2 tyres have completely been spoilt at the outer edge. In spite of doing another wheel alignment at 12500km.

My other tyre got a crack at the ghat section and I had to dispose of it leaving me with 1 good tyre. I am thinking of replacing all the 4 tyres of the car with a better brand if possible. Any recommendations guys?

I have a 2015 Ford Fiesta (the global one). It came shod with 195/60-R15. I got the stock Goodyears replaced with Yoko Earth 1 just after the delivery.
Now I am looking to replace those. Want better braking, so upsizing to 205 section tyres makes sense.
As the GC is really low at 153mm, I would prefer 205/60-R15 but there is only Yoko S drives and Apollo Alnac 4G in this configuration.
However, there are more options in 205/55-R15, there is Conti UC-6 that I like. Though this will reduce the GC by 4mm but for a greater overall behaviour, I can manage.
So can gurus here help me understand Yoko S drive vs Conti UC 6 vs Apollo Alnac 4G? I looked online but couldn't get anything conclusive.

Hi srinivas794, wanted to check if you got your tyres replaced?

My Taigun runs on a similar tyre size and I want to upgrade them for better grip and comfort. Not many options are available on the market for 205/55 R17. I'm not sure if any other size apart from this should be considered or not.

Guys, Have already booked i20 Nline N8 imt and as everybody @ TeamBHP has opined about the bad quality of stock Ceat Secura Drive 195/55 R16 , I am thinking of change/upsize asap as I get my hand on wheels.

So, here are my query:
1. What is the best upsize: 205/50/R16 or 205/55/R16?
2. What will be the pros & cons of upsizing to 205/55/R16 in terms of fuel efficiency, drive comfort, steering & cornering?
3. Continental UC6 or MC5 or Michelin P4ST which is the best for above mentioned concerns?

Request guidance on whether it will be the right upgrade.

I’ve written elsewhere about this. We originally upgraded my Dad’s Glanza to Yokohama Earth 205/55/16 and then again to MRF Perfinza 205/55/16. This size is very comfortable. Also it matters that the rubber compound is softer. And the tyre pressure also matters. Try using 30 all round and see.

Thanks for the quick response. I was actually thinking of staying with 195 width. Wouldn't 205 make the steering heavier?

My Polo's driver side tyre developed a sidewall bulge and now I'm looking to upgrade the front tyres. The size is 195/55 R16. What are my best options?

Polo will do nicely with 205/55/16. Fill the wheel arches well. MRF Perfinza’s are well worth a try. Suggest change 4 tyres at one go. Keep the best one out of the existing set as your spare.

No. 205 is a very marginal upsize in width. The effect on the steering will be negligible. And in my book actually the Hyundai will benefit because it has an inherently too light power steering.
