ORCA: IIT-Bombay's electric race car

With 0-100 kmph in 3.4 secs, the car does look impressive.

MUMBAI: A racing car developed by over 75 IITians from the Bombay branch is set to compete against similar models designed by over 100 student teams from around the world. It took the team nine months to design the car, named 'ORCA'.
IIT-Bombay's racing team launched ORCA, along with NRB Bearings, Tata Motors, CEAT Tyres and other sponsors on Sunday at the campus auditorium.
"With an acceleration of 0-100kmph in 3.47 seconds, ORCA is faster than any other sports car made by Porsche, Tesla or Audi. Not only is its acceleration a record, it is the first time we have a special steel-frame chassis with carbon-fibre manufactured body, which not only reduces the weight but also stabilises the car at high speeds," said Rishabh Kappasia, a 4th-year student of Engineering Physics and leader of Team ORCA. "The car is awesome to drive thanks to its light weight, and its stability increases at high speeds," added Manthan Mahajan, a 4th-year student who drives ORCA whenever the team participates in any competition.
The car will represent India in the Formula Student UK competition, an annual car competition where electric and IC engine cars are judged on the type of engineering and the presentation skill, among other parameters. The IIT-Bombay team has participated in the event over the past five years, and are the only team to receive the FS award for design improvement three consecutive years.

Once again these guys have done us proud - I hope they get the FS award again!

A pity isn't it, that with this kind of skill & enterprise available off-the-shelf in our own country, there are also mass-production "engineering colleges" handing out degrees from campuses with neither workshops nor labs!

That's the irony. Looks like we are going by quantity than quality but then again what can we do in a country where the population is actually exploding. Infact I had read a joke where in they said "In India, your parents first make you a doctor or an engineer and then ask you what you want to do". True isnt it?

A bit more detail from our news article:

Quote:
Powered by a battery pack of 95 cells, Orca develops 80 Kw of power. This 389 volt battery is capable of accelerating the car from 0 to 100 kph in just 3.47 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 145 kph.

Re: ORCA: IIT-Bombay's electric race car

Tata Motors has announced that it will support the IIT Bombay Racing Team as the official automotive partner, in rolling out Orca – the electric race car, developed by the team.

The Orca is capable of reaching a top speed of 145 km/h, and can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.47 seconds. It will race in Formula Student (FS), UK in July 2016.

FS is an educational motorsport competition in Europe, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. It is backed by industry and high profile engineers such as Ross Brawn. The competition aims to inspire and develop young engineers. Universities from across the globe are challenged to design and build single-seat racing cars in order to compete in static and dynamic events, which demonstrate their understanding and test the performance of the vehicle.
