Bangalore-based Akhil Rabindra has been selected to join the Aston Martin Racing (AMR) Young Driver Racing Academy. He is the only Asian driver to have earned a seat in the year-long training program.

22-year old Akhil was among 23 young drivers picked from across the world. He will undergo training and assessment from the Aston Martin Racing team in the UK. The best performer of the year will be appointed as the reserve driver in 2020 with the factory racing team.

The AMR Driver Academy was setup in September 2018. 23 drivers from the age group 17 to 25 years were selected by a group of judges that included 3-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Darren Turner, works FIA World Endurance Championship drivers Jonny Adam and Maxime Martin as well as Aston Martin Racing team principal Paul Howarth.

Akhil started his motorsports career at the age of 14 with the National Karting Championship. In 2011, he was crowned vice champion in multiple karting championships. In 2012, Akhil was the youngest finalist in the Toyota Etios Racing Series and scored a podium in Chennai. The same year, he made his racing debut in the LGB Formula-Swift single seater series. In 2013, he was crowned vice champion in the Toyota Etios racing series.

Akhil became national vice champion in the Formula 4 BMW series in 2014 and was also selected for the FIA Institute Young Drivers Excellence Academy in the same year. He raced in Formula 3 at the BRDC British Formula 3 Championship in 2016 and became the only Indian to be selected for the McLaren GT Driver Academy in 2017. Last year, Akhil raced for the 3Y Technology team in the GT4 European Series in a BMW M4 GT4.
