VW to completely quit IC-engine motor racing

While rumours over the years have even hinted at a Formula 1 program for the world's second biggest carmaker, board member Dr Frank Welsch says VW will instead turn its full attention to "sustainable electromobility". Basically they will quit all Motorsports involving IC Engines.

"To this end, we are pooling our strengths and have decided to discontinue our own motorsport activities for the Volkswagen brand," he is quoted by DPA news agency.

Wolfsburg-based Volkswagen confirmed that the 169 employees of the motorsport division will be integrated into the German company's other operations.

The decision does not affect the other VW brands including Audi and Porsche.

Does this mean that the Indian motorsport activities of VW will also be stopped.

Volkswagen to terminate its global motorsport activities, India program to continue.

The Indian program run under the banner of Volkswagen Ameo Cup will however, continue as before.

Volkswagen India will continue with its Motorsport program based on ICE vehicles in India. Due to the on-going pandemic, we have recently commenced our Virtual Racing Championship, the first virtual Motorsport championship in India, and are hoping to be back on track in 2021 with our one-make series. Volkswagen Motorsport India will continue in its endeavor to nurture and provide a dynamic platform for young budding talents across the nation

In hindsight, Volkswagen is focusing its motorsport strategy on electric mobility.

Re: VW to completely quit IC-engine motor racing

I think governments should start incentivizing E races over typical Motorsport.

Motorsport racing is the pinnacle of engineering and we’ve seen improvements in mass-market cars due to newer technology trickling down from Motorsports. Since IC engines are going to be dead, I don’t see a point to continue trying to improve F1 cars as there’s no chance of any technological advancement making it to passenger cars.

The smartest engineers behind motorsports should switch to EV racing so that benefits of inventions can be experienced by normal people. Almost all existing engineers can have a new career in EV racing.

Formula E is not looking lucrative anymore. BMW and Audi are quitting Formula E due to their current regulations.
