Kush Maini has become the first Indian to win an F2 race at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Maini started the Sprint Race from pole position after qualifying 10th for the Feature Race. Leading from the front, he took the chequered flag 3.7 seconds ahead of fellow Alpine academy driver Gabriele Mini. Luke Browning of the Hitech TGR team finished third.

This is Maini’s first win with his new team, Dams. “Obviously this is the Sprint Race, we all want to win the Feature, but it’s still a win in Monaco,” Maini said.

The Indian racer still has a long way to go. With a victory in the Monaco sprint, Maini moves up to P13 in the championship. He is still 54 points behind the leader, Alexander Dunne.

It's no easy feat. Monaco being one the toughest tracks, one small mistake and it's DNF.

Re: India’s Kush Maini wins the F2 Monaco GP Sprint Race

It's Jehan Daruvala all over again. Kush is good but nowhere near as quick or consistent enough to get noticed by F1. I don't expect to see him continue in F2 next year. He showed promise when he arrived in F2, but hasn't shown anything spectacular. Besides, starting and finishing P1 at Monaco is probably very easy for most formula drivers and this is a sprint with no stops as well. And also, rewarding pole at Monaco for qualifying 10th shouldn't be allowed IMO.

Re: India’s Kush Maini wins the F2 Monaco GP Sprint Race

Whatever said and done, that is no mean feat, especially when you come from our part of the world. He has made India proud in a big way, and it was an experience of its own to hear the Indian National Anthem in Monaco. Unbelievable. I've been following F1 for the last decade and a half and had never dreamed of this moment. Maybe only in F2, but still, it is indeed fantastic to see an Indian doing it. Great Expectations: to see him come in the top 5 in F2, and then the greatest expectations will be to see him in F1.

I know none of that may happen, but for now, I am content.

Re: India’s Kush Maini wins the F2 Monaco GP Sprint Race

He is found to be Good and fast at times that few people were surprised, only to find the form fade away. Started well with Campos IMO and also had a decent start fighting with Bortoleto at the season start last year, but then dip in form. It is very competitive and to go to F1 is a uphill task unless he can really turn the season around.

Having said that we cannot take away his Monaco win and chance to stand on the top podium step and to play the National Anthem.

Exactly. While it makes a great headline, the reality is that it’s almost impossible to overtake in Monaco with the size of cars. Starting P1 guarantees a P1 finish in 99% of the cases no matter how fast or slow you are. The only variations can be because of strategies and Pit stop strategies, which wasn’t even the case here. Even in main F1 race, having 2 compulsory pit stops and some safety cars didn’t affect the order much.

Nevertheless, I hope it motivates younger ones to look up to racing and dream about being there. Only then we will have really great drivers coming out of India.
