Hero Motocorp @ Auto Expo 2012

Hero Motocorp showcased three new products for the Indian two-wheeler market.

Hero Motocorp @ Auto Expo 2012-hero-motocorp_autoexpo2012-1.jpg

For some quick figures : The company sold record 6,117,599 units of two-wheelers in the period January-December 2011, a growth of 19.2% over the calendar year of 2010 when it had sold 5,134,549 two-wheelers.

TWO NEW MOTORCYCLES – “IGNITOR” & “PASSION X PRO”, & THE NEW SCOOTER MAESTRO

Maestro
  • It has a Air cooled, 4-stroke single cylinder engine which has a 109cc displacement.
  • Produces 8.1BHP of power and 9.1Nm of torque.
  • Has an option of both Kick start / Self start like most of its competitors.
  • No Disc Brakes. It is high time manufacturers add this feature as an option atleast for those who feel the need.
  • The speedo console looks better than a few of its opponents with the Multi-Information display besides the speedometer. (We do not know in specific what information is displayed)
  • Hero Motocorp have also seem to have neglected to offer a telescopic front suspension which the competition has on offer on their products.

Re: Hero Motocorp @ Auto Expo 2012

Ignitor
  • Yes, one look at it and you notice it is similar to the Honda Stunner.
  • Some tweaks in the design which a normal buyer wouldnt even notice between the two.
  • So, the Ignitor is a 125cc, 4 stroke, single cylinder engine which produces 11BHP of power and 11Nm of torque.
  • Gets a front disc brake and a rear drum brake.
  • The speedo console is not bad, includes a analogue rpm dial and a digital speedometer.
  • The white colour is the only thing you might have not seen in the stunner if you simply had to summarise it quickly. (When asked, the official denied to my question if they were sharing the same components from the same supplier for the Honda Stunner)

Passion X Pro
  • One of the most promising bike in the commuter segment, the Passion has also been given a quick refresh in terms of look and also a little here and there.
  • The Passion X Pro gets some unwanted extensions on the tank.
  • Unlike the previous generation which had a horizontal engine, the new Passion X Pro has a vertically mounted 110cc engine which produces 8.6BHP of power and 9.4Nm of torque.
  • Speedo again is a mix and match of analogue with a multi-information display next to it.

Concept Scooter : Leap

On 6th of January 2012, Hero Motocorp also unveiled their Hybrid Concept scooter "Leap".

Hero Motocorp @ Auto Expo 2012-hero-motocorp_autoexpo2012-41.jpg
  • This one will run on both battery and petrol.
  • The screen at the speedo console, which we suppose will be used as a multi-information display looked very futuristic in design, but the excessive chrome inserts around it made it look very flashy. Also the rear view mirrors were a clean and neat design.
  • No specifications out with regards to the engine capacity.

I can't understand why so may bikes in India nowadays have these plastic parts attached to them. These serve a purpose on sports bikes, but not on commuter bikes. Manufacturers seem to be doing this to make a bike look more premium. But it will hardly make sense if every other bike looks like this.

Re: Hero Motocorp @ Auto Expo 2012

being the worlds largest producer of bikes
the display by hero is not very promising
they are content in providing only proven products and not willing to take any bold steps

Re: Hero Motocorp @ Auto Expo 2012

Honda motorcycles may soon overtake Hero if Hero continues on this self destructing path of taping new stickers on old bikes and sometimes making an adjustment or two with the plastic parts (Passion Pro's new tail light!). The 97cc engine has been over used to death on a large part of its lineup with a multitude of names attached to it. The Karizma has been running forever without any significant technical changes being made to it since launch. The ZMR gets FI with a ton of plastic for free. For me, none of Hero's bikes make me want to go and pick one up right away.

Also look at their website. They haven't bothered to change the labeling on any of the bikes on virtual display, they still show "Hero Honda" many months after the divorce. Just shows how lazy they can be.

On the flip side, I agree Honda also has outdated bikes in its stable like the Unicorn and the Shine and I also agree most Indians prefer 'reliability' and resale value over cutting edge technology or other modern safety features like ABS or even atleast disc brakes.

I appreciate TVS for taking the first bold step of introducing ABS on an Indian make motorcycle at a cost affordable for those seeking additional safety.

Re: Hero Motocorp @ Auto Expo 2012

Thanks Parry for the update on "Hum mein hai Hero" Stand.

For sure Ignitor is a cosmetic tweak of Stunner. But then Stunner might sell for Style, Honda name, etc etc, Ignitor might sell for the name " HERO".

Maestro is a tweaked Pleasure, nut nicely touched up. The Speedo looks neat and effective and the front stance looks youthful.

In a way, nice products that SELL.

Is the front wheel of this new concept scooter bigger than the rear wheel? or Am I mistaken from the photos?
It looks as if the front wheel is picked from a bike while the rear wheel is picked from a scooter. Could anyone enlighten me as to what advantages does a scooter have with front wheel larger than the rear wheel?

Apart from the wheels the rest of the vehicle looks good.

Re: Hero Motocorp @ Auto Expo 2012

For some reason I have my doubts on how Hero will continue to be the force to reckon with, if we were to evaluate their recent product launches (Impulse?). The termination of the JV with Honda has left Hero high and dry. One can't create individuality by bootlegging products, moreover when you are a company of the stature of Hero.

Guess some genius @ Hero was given zero time, no money and a crap load of left over paint to prepare for Auto-Expo-2012. The genius got started with the assignment by fabricating together the front of a Suzuki-Access and the rear of a Honda-Active, thereafter christening it after himself that’s how the name “Maestro”. Then, shoplifted a Honda Stunner and repainted it with all the other Hero siblings. Gosh how long can you keep stuffing doses of Passion & Splendor. While I completely believe that retaining successful brand names is a good business strategy but battering the customer isn’t.

It’s better not to say much and assume Hero is happy doing what they are doing.

Please note : These are my personal views

Red + White Pleasure = Pure displeasure, totally ugly seat cover.
Black karizma with red tape = Looks downright ugly.
White splendour ? Why ?

Was HERO forced to put up a stall at AUTO EXPO at Gunpoint?

Maestro without telescopic forks , external fuel filling WEGO is better for sure.

IMPULSE is really a product which stands out.
Does any one still buy Acheiver?

HERO has to find someone who is good at naming bikes.
How can any one have names like JOY,DAWN,ACHIEVER,PLEASURE,MAESTRO,IGNITOR
