Mahindra to begin 2-wheeler exports to Sri Lanka

In line with its recent export ambitions (Mahindra to up exports; start with XUV500 to Europe), Mahindra & Mahindra will now enter the two-wheeler segment in neighbouring Sri Lanka.

The Mumbai-based auto giant is expected to launch its scooters in the island country by the end of 2012, followed by motorcycles as well. The foundation has already been laid as Mahindra entered the public mindspace through what works best in the subcontinent - cricket, as title sponsor for the recently concluded Sri Lankan Premier League (1st season).

Mahindra’s current line-up of scooters consists of the Rodeo, Duro, Flyte and Kine models that are priced between Rs 32,000-49,000. The Stallio is the only motorcycle model it currently offers, but there is the upcoming 300cc bike, the Mojo 300.

Sri Lanka is the largest vehicle export market for Mahindra and the likes of Bajaj Auto already dominate the two-wheeler segment there. However, that will not be Mahindra’s concern as Bajaj exports only motorcycles. What could be a worry though is the hike in import duties that was implemented by the Lankan government in April this year. The 61% to 100% increase has adversely affected prices.

Re: Mahindra to begin 2-wheeler exports to Sri Lanka

61-100% import duty is quite steep indeed. Does Srilanka have a local two and/or four wheeler industry setup that their govt. wants to encourage?

The Mojo has been Mahindra's "upcoming" since forever. Any chances of seeing it on road anytime soon?
