Restoring a 1981 Yezdi D 250 Classic

Restoring a 1981 Yezdi D 250 Classic-1.jpg

Restoring a 1981 Yezdi D 250 Classic-2.jpg

Attachment 1005546

MODEL: 1981

TYPE: D250 CLASSIC

OWNERS: 2 (Excluding Me)

Bought & Restored at : Mysore

Documents: Clear, Got the bike transferred & got the FC done till 2017

Condition at Purchase: Running condition with bad Externals (chrome & Paint etc)

Date of Purchase: 29th Sep 12

Completion of Restoration: 24th Oct 12

Purpose : Just accidental , met a classmate who was doing used bike resale, while talking , he showed me this bike which looked in good original shape, did not have such ideas, but just fell in love with the bike. My father had all the models of Yezdi till 90s. may be this is one of the reasons to buy.

Disclosure: Please excuse me as neither Article nor Restoration is with Experience.

Previous Restoration Experience: NIL on Bike, had done a 81 Model MM540 (posted in Team BHP)

Mechanicals: (Replacements done)
1. Engine 1st Size piston changed,
2. Engine Bearings ( all 3) changed
3. Chain Sprocket
4. Complete Electrical Kit
5. Tyre, Tube

Non Mechanicals:
1. Complete Chrome
2. Complete Paint
3. Rubber parts
4. Restoring Speedo / Tail lamp / All original Nuts / bolts (Through Chrome/Nickle)
5. Seat

Pending work as of 25th Oct :
1. Engine Side panel – Do not know whether to paint silver or do a mild buffing ( do not want to make it shining)
2. Engine Head ( same challenge as above..!)
3. Gears getting struck badly (Thanks to hammer work done on Starting leaver) – need to do rework on lever – if any help here am very thankful.

Experience:
Paid excess amounts everywhere ( lack of experience hence not disclosing ). As a first time restorer, do not know how it has come, but to my satisfaction it is ok types. But got good amount of feedback from friends & family & few queries when I drove it around 50 Kms in Mysore ( so assume that I have done a fairly good job). I work for a Software company & have very limited time to run around these guys (Biggest lesson on Restoration)

Things learnt:
1. Do not give Yezdi in unknown hand (one who is out of touch of doing Yezdi)
2. Restorations needs huge amount of time & patience (running around too..!!)

Help needed from Experts :
1. Gears getting struck badly (Thanks to hammer work done on kicker leaver) – need to do rework on lever – if any help here am very thankful.

Pictures :
Posting few pictures which I took during restoration.
Will post the completed ones tomorrow.

Let me be the first to congratulate you.

Frankly, you should be happy with the outcome. The bike looks great. You may feel that the money spent is more but being a first time restorer this was expected.

Suggest you to get your gear problem fixed and enjoy the ride.

Re: Restoring a 1981 Yezdi D 250 Classic

The final outcome is nice. Congrats on your new ride. As you have mentioned, parts are difficult and costly these days. However the ride experience is a different ball game together.
You could have opted for some other colour scheme on the bike. Black looks bland. Oil green or Silver would have made it look a class apart. Dont worry now, ride hard, ride safe. Cheers

Congrats Ananth, The Yezdi is a timeless Classic.
Having owned one, I can tell you this machine can go on and on forever; in fact the machine is so simple that if you ever were to open the engine, you can count the number of moving parts as there are not many. Yezdi is as simple and functional as things can be, and I simple love them.

Congrats Ananth. The bike has turned out beautiful.
Could you please share the details of good yezdi mechanics in Mysore?
There are'nt many mechs comfortable with Yezdis around elsewhere.
I have a CLII engine with a stuck crank bearing that needs to be set right.

Dastagir is one of the finest in Mysore, I have seen his work on one of my friends' bike in Bangalore and is really good.

And if you are from Bangalore, you can try Moosa at Shivajinagar. His nr. is 9342390354.

Congrats Ananth, She looks terrific and very nice. Do share in the details of costs if you would not mind.

What pistons did you use for the restoration?

PS: Have heard of Dastagir and always thought high of his work.

Re: Restoring a 1981 Yezdi D 250 Classic

thanks friends for appreciations.
piston used is 1st rebore ( size 1 thats what the mechanic said)
i got the mechanicals done by dastagir he did excellent job on gear , clutch & front fork.
I did the chrome work from shivram & painting from khizer ( yezdi expert).
Most of the mechanics do the wheel hub, engine side pannels buffing & make it shining if you give the task of complete restoration to them.
just to retain the originality, i did these two tasks on my own, bit tireing & expensive, but worth it .

Hello Ananth,
Which piston have you used in the bike? Is it Powerpac? And where did you source the piston from? It is pretty hard to find a good one these days.

You do get 'Diamond' make pistons easily. Even 'IPL' ones are available.. They came as OE from the factory. Will cost you a BOMB though. Old limited stock of 'Engineer' make pistons are also available here in my home town.

I have run around for a year and half spanning 12K on my bike for a Mahle and I got the news form my mechanic today about the arrival, however it is a BOMB as you have mentioned, but now I can sleep peacefully.
My original piston has lasted 70K, and more if it was not for my fault. I regret it today when I look back.
We have a get together of the South Indian Yezdi/Jawa clubs known as Southern Raid. During the first raid, I took along a pillion and was doing 95K when I left the throttle to die on a incline and instantly the bike seized, the damage was done at that point and this resulted in poor compression thereafter. I managed to ride the bike till date without any such misfortune though but the performance of the bike came down.
