Honda to launch 100cc competitor to the Splendor

The Economic Times reports that Honda Motorcycle & Scooters India will launch a new 100-110 cc motorcycle (codenamed K23) based on its Dream series of motorcycles. The bike is based on the Dream Yuga platform and will hit the market in the coming months.

Honda is going straight for erstwhile partner Hero's jugular with its new bike that will offer Honda quality, aggressive pricing and high fuel economy, in its quest to knock Hero's Splendor family off the best selling pedestal. Honda is likely to charge only a small premium over Hero's offerings in the same segment. Between the newly launched model and its Dream Yuga, Honda is targeting a total of 1.2 million units in the coming fiscal (Honda is targeting total sales of 3.93 million units in FY14). Honda has already said that it aspires to become the No. 1 two-wheeler company in India by 2015-2016.

Despite its age, Hero's Splendor range sold 1.8 Lakh motorcycles in October last year; the nearest competition was from Bajaj's Discover family which sold 1.52 Lakh units. In the first seven months of fiscal year 2013, Splendor sales were at 1.4 million units. Bajaj launched its Discover 100T motorcycle in January 2013 to target the entry-level segment with sales of 50,000 units a month being planned.

Way to go HMSI!

Hope they dont go over-board and spoil it off. The 100cc market is the bread and butter for Hero MotorCorp with the Splendor.

But yes I still love the Honda and eyeing to get back to Honda as a customer.

To become no.1, HMSI may have to make their spares more affordable and their sales people a bit more friendly. Right now, a lot of customers move to other brands after feeling neglected at Honda's 2 wheeler showrooms.

Re: Honda to launch 100cc competitor to the Splendor

HHoo HHuummm... as if we did not already have enough piddly 100ccs. They would do good to at least ensure it does not get those skinny bicycle tyres. And I shudder to think what it will be named - Honda Dream Navayuga, Honda Khwab?? Or perhaps CB Enthraller

Excuse me, but I really do not see any sense in this move by Honda - unless they offer something radically different over and above what is currently the norm in this (100 - 125cc) class.

Re: Honda to launch 100cc competitor to the Splendor

Probably a wrong move from Honda. Splendour was once a premium bike which eventually became the commuter. It still sells because of its simplicity and trust worthy nature though the quality has gone south pole. Honda India has the same or worse quality with respect to hero. Bajaj on the other hand is slowly inching north with quality. If the splendor goes down it would most probably be to a bajaj.

Re: Honda to launch 100cc competitor to the Splendor

Splendor is like what an Alto is in the 4-wheeler segment, for more than a decade it has made a name for itself in the hearts of the people, looks like Honda is trying to settle some scores with Hero group, but Bajaj is their main threat and sooner they understand they will do well. Honda bikes have failed to deliver the assured mileage always and their service and spares availability are not to be compared with Hero or Bajaj.

Whilst the Japs are still DREAMing to build a Splendor rivalling 100cc motorcycle, we already have desi version of it, up and running. Take that Honda!!
