Re: The KTM Duke 390 Ownership Experience Thread

Hello,

Gonna travel 500km Tommorow, was doing some basic checks and spotted this oil leak below the engine.

i got this oil leak before as well, I thought this was due to front sprocket so I changed my entire chain set at 14k km. Right now I did 2k km with this new chain set and got this oil leak again.

What could be the cause for this ?

That looks like excessive chain lube dripping to me.
But it can even be from the drain bolt. You need to clean the area around the drain bolt and the gear shifter to confirm.

I see this on my gen 3 Duke too, every time after I lube my chain. It's not oil leak. Nothing to be worried about IMO.

Good luck on your trip!

There is definitely some improvement but it's not night and day.

I spent 6.5k for the unit. I haven't made up my mind yet if it has been value for money!
I have installed fuelx lite on my svartpilen 250 (bs6) just as an experiment to see what changes it does to the bike. My observations are, it made no difference from idle to about 4000rpm. From 4 to 6 the bike is more eager and the throttle response has improved even the sound has changed. But it’s not a very significant, i wouldn’t buy this product for such minor difference. From 6000 onwards there is no difference.

I have also installed quick throttle, i am using progressive cam at the moment. It increases the throttle opening (as compared to stock) after about 30% of throttle twist. This cam gives the same throttle opening initially as the stock, which makes city riding easy.

The KTM Duke 390 Ownership Experience Thread-img_6710.jpeg

I havent clicked photo of the cam so i am using image from google.

The KTM Duke 390 Ownership Experience Thread-img_6712.jpeg

As for the mileage i feel it has dropped because of the quick throttle, i also feel that fuelx will not improve the mileage as they claim nor will the engine run cooler.

Of the 2 mods i feel quick throttle is worth the money since you get 3 different cams and you can always interchange to get different riding experience and the change is much more prominent than that from fuelx lite.

Re: The KTM Duke 390 Ownership Experience Thread

Say hello to the latest addition to my garage, Bandit!

The KTM Duke 390 Ownership Experience Thread-img_9374.jpeg

The KTM Duke 390 Ownership Experience Thread-img_9385.jpeg

Took delivery on the 23rd and have been trying to put as many kilometres on it as possible to be done with the running in of the bike. So far was able to do a good 355kms on the odo and it has been an absolute pleasure riding it (very very sanely at that) on the highways.

Will keep updating this thread as much as i can with my experiences with Bandit and all the stories with it.

Cheers!

Nice to see an open engine!! Reminds me of my FSAE days in college. We used the same gen 1 390 engine for our formula student car as well. One raw metal heart this one is.

Would love to know more on the rebuild! All the best with this new challenge!

Hi amyntor!

This was right after I had fit the wind shield. As of now, the number plate is mounted right above the front wheel.

To my dismay, I delayed fitting it by a couple of days as the mounting bolts provided did not have long enough threads and the police here in Vadodara (who are usually ultra complacent) decided to conduct a check and I got myself into trouble.

On a side note, do you (or any other BHPians) have a good suggestion for air filters specifically for the gen 3? With the revised engine, I'm not sure what's best. Or, should I just stick to stock, because it's not like I'm looking for any more performance than what's already available.

I recently replaced the stock air filter with the BMC air filter. I wrote about it here: https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/motor...ml#post5901417 (2024 KTM Duke 390 Review)

I didn't notice any difference in performance after installing it. It just made the low end a bit smoother. That said, it's only been a few days so it's too early to tell if it's worth it or not.

But would I buy it again? Probably not. It costed me INR 7299. I still think there are better ways to spend that money.

Although it's not substantial but would be good to check the drive/output shaft seal where the front sprocket slots into. The gear shaft seal is another thing you should check. That residue is too thin, and I suspect there could be some minor oil seepage mixing with the chain lube gunk. It happened to me and took me quite some time to diagnose!

If you recently lubed your chain it could be the excess lube. If not it could also be oil leaking from behind the sprocket (output shaft seal) or it could also be oil from the seal behind the gear shifter.

Sharing a maintenance tip that ktm recommends in their service manual

The KTM Duke 390 Ownership Experience Thread-img_6916.jpeg

Cleaning the dust boots of the fork legs. It’s a simple and easy process, it’s something thats going to save money and unwanted fork maintenance in the long run.

The KTM Duke 390 Ownership Experience Thread-img_6901.jpeg

1. Remove the dust boot by pulling it out from the groove and then pushing it down. The seating groove is located at the top of the dust boot.

The KTM Duke 390 Ownership Experience Thread-img_6903.jpeg

2. Clean the surface of any dirt and sand that may be accumulated. In my bike you can see sand particles have been accumulated.

The KTM Duke 390 Ownership Experience Thread-img_6906.jpeg

3. Place a clean cloth in between the dust boot and fork leg.

The KTM Duke 390 Ownership Experience Thread-img_6909.jpeg

4. Rotate the boot against the cloth, do this a couple of times using a cleaner side everytime.

5. Clean the fork tube with the cloth.

Dirt that has stuck to the cloth

Cleaned contact surface of the boot

Once everything is cleaned

Note that i don't use any oil on the dust boots after cleaning.

A small pro tip. Once the dust boot is pulled off, remember to spray a dab of WD-40 or dab a few drops of diesel over a rag or inside the boot, wipe it well -- really well, this will loosen caked fine sand/grime particles which are the prime cause for seal failure as the boot itself acts as collector which in turn acts as an abrasive medium.

When installing the boot cover, apply a small dab of vaseline around the circumference of the boot lock on the fork which will prevent water/dust ingress and also allows for easy fitment without fuss.

Cheers!

My 2015 Duke 390's airbox lid is broken, exactly at the points where the bolts go in. Any idea of the part number and if it's easily available online?

Online is costlier everywhere. Get it fixed at a nearest SVC, best bet.

Re: The KTM Duke 390 Ownership Experience Thread

Hey guys,

Does anyone have reliable suggestions for a hand guard for the Gen 3? I've been on the lookout for one but online solutions seem very flimsy so far. Not sure if the Gen 2 ones will adapt to the Gen 3 either.

If anyone knows any better, please do let me know.

Cheers!
