Hey adrian,

Regarding this cam gear sound, is it sound coming from the crank to cam gear or is it the sound of the pushrod hitting against the cam lobes?

Also, can you please tell us if this cam gear lash sound can be reduced by making a few adjustments somewhere or the other?

The pushrods are always kept in tension by means of the hydraulic lifters.
The sound is the resultant of free play between the exhaust and inlet cam gears and it can only be adjusted by tweaking the eccentric sleeves on which it is mounted and of course that means that you will have to open the RHS engine side cover.

Sorry Majumdarda for hijacking your thread, but I need a bit of clarity on this topic.

Dear adrian,

just to understand it better, this cam gear lash sound from what I understand, will be a continuous "kirrrrrr" found instead of the "tap-tap-tap" sound of the tappets. Am I right?

Completed the Fourth Free (so called) servicing today.

Nothing worth mentioning from the servicing aspect, it was just a regular work. Reached the service center around 8:30 in the morning, got the "numero uno" tag; was very happy that my Amun-Ra will be handled first, only to be proven wrong later on. It seems that at the time of servicing etc, unless one shouts, he is not going to be heard. During all the four servicing till date at Brahma, the below dialogue was common every time,

"Yesterday's load was too much and therefore we could not complete in time, and the bikes need to be delivered today. Therefore please bear with us some more time."

Probably its the same story at all the service centers. RE Mgmt, probably needs to start something called as "time management" and the importance to adhere to it. My Motorcycle was put up on the ramp at 11:15 am and work completed by 12 noon, including washing and payment. All the time I have observed them from the glass window, therefore work was performed diligently. So I really wonder what do they mean by "pending workload". Seems it is more intentional.

There was another B500 with Pune registration, probably from a doctor. I observed some sort of antenna connected to his rear number plate. I have seen this type of fixture in some Harleys too. Can anyone please advise their usage or is it just show purpose? For the B500, the antenna was connected to one of the screws of the rear number plate and I saw some green wires (something like indigenous earthing).

Post servicing did a good ride all the way to Shell Hinjewadi to do a complete tank-full.

I am free as a bird

What is this antenna used for?

On a second thought, if I fit the R.V.Ms of Avenger, will it be able to give me a shake less, stable image? Some inputs please.

Dear friend, it is more of a metallic tapping sound. If it is continuous hum, the reason may be that the cam gears are adjusted too tight.

After all who can explain it better than Mr.Gurunandan:)

Great going Girishar. Thank you for sharing. How was the overall experience from riding perspective? Do try to stay within the 50kmph limit till the run-in is completed.

By the way, in the second picture, it seems the silencer rubber extension is not fitted properly. A little push should do the trick.

Best regards,

Hi,

I tried my best to keep within 50kmph but some times touched 60kmph.

And coming to the riding perspective there was no need of 1st or 2nd gear. It was a cake walk for my RBG. Most of the time I was in top gear only on steep curves 3rd gear and there was no jerks at all. Really satisfied. But one thing is there vibrations are little more. Need to get it checked.

Girish

Keep Thumping.

girishar:
It sounds like you are lugging the engine in the interest of avoiding shifting gears.
This is not good for the engine or for the transmission during break in.

I advise that when breaking in a new motorcycle engine and transmission, do not over-rev the engine but by the same token, do not lug or bog down the engine to excessively low rpm's.

The first 500 km break in requires that the engine gets operated throughout its low to mid range rpms.
Although the Owners Manual says the maximum speed for my 500cc UCE Royal Enfield during this distance is 60 kmph, occasionally riding short distances at speeds up to 70 kmph in 5th gear can actually be good for it.

Do not use more than 1/2 of the full range of the throttle but let the engine run easy up and down thru its speeds while it accelerates and decelerates.

Basically, it needs to learn to run at many different speeds so the parts are subjected to many different loads and vibrations.

Hi Jim,

I have completed my break in period and as I said there was no sign of struggle from the engine neither luges nor jerks whatsoever or I did not recognize not sure.stupid:..

And yes I haven't used it more than 1/2 of the full range of the throttle and followed all the possible instruction for break in period.

@Majumdarda: yes correct agree: the rubber was loose and its now corrected.

And one more instance where the RE mechanics are so negligent:

After the first service I got my bike and drove to my home which is some 30KM from service center, after reaching home parked it in my parking lot and went up to my apartment, after some time went down to receive my friend as we were planning for Nandi hills trip the next morning, saw the horror there was oil stains below the engine :Frustrati. The fresh oil was leaking from the engine, when inspected the main drain plug nut it was loose and was very lucky that it did not fall on the way to my home. It was so loose that i can easily screw with my fingers :Shockked:. It would have been a nightmare on our trip if I had not looked at it . So next time I will be vary cautious while receiving the bike.

Girish,

I am sure you have checked the oil level on main stands. If not, then please do it as soon as possible and do make sure that its between the marks, else do top it up as appropriate.

Best regards,

Majumdarda,

I have one question. When to check for the OIL LEVEL. If I check the oil level in the morning nothing will be in the window. But when I start the engine The OIL LEVEL starts raising and if the engine is running for 10 min the OIL LEVEL window is fully covered by the oil. I am totally confused.:Frustrati

Please help me out on how to check the OIL LEVEL.

Girish

Keep Thumping....

I am not Majumdarda but perhaps I can help.

The engine oil communicates with both engine side covers thru holes from the central oil tank at the bottom of the engine.

If, after riding you shut the engine off and use the sidestand while you are dismounting, or, if you lean the motorcycle at all to the left, oil in the right side cover will move into the central tank and the left side cover.

Much of it remains there even if the motorcycle is placed on the centerstand, making the oil level in the right side covers sight guage appear to be low or nonexistent.

To check for the real oil level, with the motorcycle on the center stand, on level ground, start the engine and let it run for at least 30 seconds. Then turn the engine off and let the oil in the upper areas of the engine drain back into the lower part of the engine.

After at least 30 seconds wait, look at the oil level window.
Its level should be close to the real oil level.

Because the sight guage is out at the extreme right side, a small error in the levelness of the floor can change the reading so, if you want to know the exact level, rotate the motorcycle 180 degrees, making it point the opposite direction. Then repeat the engine start, idle, shut off, drain sequence and re-read the level in the sight window.
Average the two readings to learn what the real level is.

Generally speaking this last part is unnecessary. If a level has been determined by doing the first start/idle/shut off/drain/read and the level is at least at the lower cast level mark and below the top of the guage, the oil level is good.

Hi Jim,

Today morning before i even touched my bike, tried to look at the OIL LEVEL window and to my disbelief the window was full.:Frustrati.

Don't know whats the problem. I parked it in center stand and it wasn't disturbed the whole night. Still the window showed full oil.

Do not worry on it mate, you will get used to it. Read my first update on the shakiness of the mirrors.:D
Might be the mirrors of the Avenger can be useful, I have already asked this question, waiting for the response.

Guys, have you wondered, that why RE is now selling the old Tank Stickers? I mean, they have just rolled out the models with the new sticker set and new logo, and within one month, the old and trusted tank stickers are available at the dealerships [2600 for one pair for B500]. So what was the need of the new stickers then without market review? And now giving an option to the end user to replace back to the old one, seems somewhat to be business oriented. What about the paint? Will the stickers just come off the tank without any trails and peeling (I doubt); and if the paint goes for a toss, then its more expenses.
