So after the much awaited KTM D390, bikers out there, start saving quickly, for the RC390, an affordable faired sports-bike based on the D390 is set to launch in the coming year!

KTM and ADAC have presented the KTM RC 390 Cup machine for the new “ADAC JUNIOR CUP POWERED BY KTM”, being introduced at the 2013 MotoGP of Germany at the Sachsenring. For the coming year, the RC 390 is to be the new machinery for the Brand Cup for up-and-coming young racers.
By introducing the motorcycle that will be used for the 2014 “ADAC Junior Cup powered by KTM”, KTM takes another important step in extending its activities on asphalt.

Following the successful entry into the Moto3 World Championship – KTM brought the World Championship title to Austria in the premiere year – and the completion of the Duke range of naked bikes with the 125, 200 and 390 displacement models, there will now also be a fully faired sports bike available for sale. In typical fashion, there is a direct connection to motorsports. The “ADAC Junior Cup powered by KTM” will see the RC 390 in action for the first time worldwide as the exclusive motorcycle used in this Brand Cup competition.

Naturally it is not difficult for the sports motorcycle manufacturer from Mattighofen, Austria, to make the connection between racing and series production. In short: as always, KTM once again underlines that it is always “Ready to Race” in every aspect by presenting the RC 390 Cup at the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland.
KTM CEO Stefan Pierer: ”We developed a pure GP racing machine for the Moto3 World Championship. In contrast, the RC 390 Cup is based on a series model project. Both of these two projects were given the highest priority because the development of lower displacement, high quality street bikes are among our core activities. The new KTM RC 390, which will be available for sale in 2014 will meet a big demand for affordable, quality sport bikes for the lower displacement class.”

The KTM CEO adds: “Since 1993, ADAC has achieved a great deal with excellent work with up-and-coming riders in the Junior Cup. The primary development objective of the fully faired RC 390 Cup bike was to enable affordable junior racing with the best possible sporting potential. To achieve this, the Cup RC bike has a strong and reliable heart of the most modern kind. 375 cc displacement, four valve technology, liquid cooled, two oil pumps, electronic Dellorto fuel injection – these are the core features of the single cylinder, four stroke engine that is set to release around 38 horse power in the Cup bike and, which incidentally will be very fuel efficient even at full throttle.

Taking design cues straight from the RC8, this bike is one the best-looking bikes, IFF KTM gets rid of the stupid headlight of the RC8 and gives it some really sharp and edgy headlight design like the Ducatis!
For me, this will be a killer launch and expect it to be priced also competently, given the excellent pricing of the D390. If given the money, would definitely wait for this rather than the D390 any given day!
Would be even better if it comes with all those racing-decals on the production-model too

Time to say BuBye to CBR400/ Ninja300. Make way for Paapa!

That's the RC8..
The RC390 is its baby version and takes its design cues from the RC8, as I've written earlier.

Its like saying the r15 should look exactly like the R1, the same fairing, same rear profile etc. !! But it is not so right?

The RC390 though is a baby RC8, it is based on the D390.
With only some minor exceptions here and there, the two bikes look so similar.
To each his own With all due respect.

I write down these predictions for this bike
1 - It will look nearly just as this one, but will not be this light, will be around 150 kgs.
2 - It will have nearly equal power to the D390 if not more.
3 - It will have taller gearing.
4 - It will not sport all these decals, but will come with some KTM regular decals.
5 - It will have ABS(as option atleast).
6 - The fuel tank will be 10.5L if not more.
7 - It will cost under 3L on road Mumbai.

Here are somethings which I really want from the bike.
1 - Proper race support, as in ready body work to convert it to this cup model.
2 - No rear seat and rear sets of course.
3 - A 12L fuel tank atleast.
4 - 45 - 50 bhp, power being only in the top end of the rev range, just like proper race spec bikes.
5 - Availability of Power Parts, like the Exhausts and other stuff if not coming in at 45-50 bhp.


But in any case, this bike with this looks and a decent power outage(read more than the N300) and pricing under 3L has found a buyer in me and no I wont sell my P250 or my D200 for this.

Call me a pervert but I like the whole naked frame and front fairing thing!

Also please keep in mind that the machine shown above is pure racing contraption with zero consideration towards everyday usability, it only has the essential bits necessary for it to go flat out and carve the corners!

What you are looking at is a Full Track Prepped Machine

If it has to come on Road as per Indian standards and Govt. norms there will be lot of changes is what you can expect.

Looks are subjective some may like it some may not, but what disappoints me in KTM (D200 / D390) is the Top End Power

Last but not the least comparison with CBR400 / Ninja 300 let's just say it a long shot figures on papers don't match the result on Tarmac..

Hope it comes to India so that buyers get another option to choose from..

Austrian motorcycle maker KTM has just showcased a fully faired race bike that will be used in the ADAC Junior Cup Motorcycle Race Series (The ADAC cup is a one make racing championship in Germany that serves as a platform for young motorcycle racers). Dubbed the RC390, the fully faired motorcycle uses the recently launched KTM Duke 390's engine and various other aggregates.



The KTM RC390's 373cc engine gets detuned to 37.48 Bhp while the kerb weight of the race-spec bike also goes down to about 130 kilograms. KTM, through its official blog, maintains that a 44 Bhp power output (Similar to what the KTM Duke 390 outputs) can be extracted from this engine, another indication that the race bike is based on the Duke platform.

In that sense, the production version of the KTM RC390, scheduled to be unveiled at EICMA 2013 at Milan in November, could come with a higher power output. Also, the KTM RC390 race bike seems like a precursor to the production version given its Duke platform connection. That said, the fully faired motorcycle does come with a slew of changes when compared to the Duke 390.



A new fuel tank, full fairing, a steeper steering rake angle, exposed frame on the middle and tail sections, and clip-on handle bars are the various changes on the KTM RC390. On the production version, a few changes could be effected to make the motorcycle street friendly.

An extra seat for the pillion is expected to be added while the Akrapovic muffler will make way for a much more milder sounding exhaust muffler. The production version of the KTM RC390 could be positioned above the Duke 390 in terms of price, as KTM India's flagship product. Expect a first-half 2014 launch in the Indian market.



The KTM RC390 is expected to be followed by a touring version of the Duke 390, in line with the motorcycles that KTM sells under its Adventure line. Like all small capacity motorcycles based on the Duke platform (125, 200 and 390), the production version of the fully faired sportsbike will roll out of Bajaj Auto's Chakan production unit.

Bajaj Auto holds a 48% stake in KTM, and works closely with the Austrian motorcycle company to develop and produce big volume sportsbikes. These motorcycles are sold in India and are also exported to markets across the globe. Bajaj Auto's Chakan factory gives KTM attractive cost savings as labour and part costs in India are much cheaper than those at KTM's factory in Europe.



These cost savings have enabled KTM to position its motorcycles at attractive prices in many markets including the ones in Europe. KTM is now the largest motorcycle maker in Europe, usurping the top spot held by BMW Motorrad, last year.

Earlier this year, KTM CEO Mr. Stefan Pierer noted that the small capacity Duke platform would play host to fully faired sportsbikes and dual purpose touring motorcycles. All three engine options of the small capacity Dukes (125cc, 200cc and 390cc) will support the new motorcycle variants. These variants are aimed at expanding KTM's motorcycle line up globally and also giving buyers more options to pick and choose from.

While the 125cc variants will not be sold in India as they're intended primarily for the export market, the 200cc and 390cc variants of the fully faired and dual purpose motorcycles are expected to make it to the country. Mr. Amit Nandi, the CEO of KTM India, speaking to the EconomicTimes, has stated that two new fully faired motorcycles will be launched by the Austrian motorcycle maker in India, during 2014.

While exact details of these motorcycles haven't been officially revealed, the RC200 and RC390 motorcycles are very likely to make it to Indian shores. Days ago, KTM showcased the KTM RC390 race bike, as a precursor to the street-spec production version. The faired motorcycles based on the small capacity Duke platform are expected to be priced and positioned above the street fighter Duke range.



While the fully faired KTM RC200 and RC390 motorcycles will share engines with the Duke 200 and 390 models respectively, the motorcycles could come with revised frame and suspension geometry, features aimed at delivering more focused track handling. Also, the flat handlebars of the Duke series will make way for sportier, forward leaning clip-on units.

The motorcycles will be built at Bajaj Auto's Chakan factory, off Pune, as is the case with the small capacity Duke range. Apart from domestic sales, exports are a given. Fully faired motorcycles are a big draw in India, where many buyers expect a motorcycle priced over a lakh rupees to feature a full fairing. Meanwhile, production timelines for the dual purpose, Adventure series of motorcycles based on the sub-500cc Duke platform are yet to be revealed by KTM.

EICMA, also known as the Milan Motorcycle Show is a yearly affair held at Milan, Italy. This motorcycle show plays host to a flurry of global motorcycle brands who use this event to showcase their upcoming wares and concepts. KTM's last big splash at Milan, during EICMA 2012, was a two pronged one, what with the unveils of the KTM Super Duke 1290 in concept guise, and the Duke 390 in production guise. This year's EICMA is likely to see KTM unveiling no less than three new motorcycles, all hopping on to the full-faired bandwagon in a big way.



Note: Images used in this report are that of ADAC cup race-spec KTM RC 390, and are illustrative in nature.

VisorDown asserts that KTM will unveil the small capacity Duke motorcycle range based RC 125, RC 200 and RC 390 motorcycles. All three motorcycles will be full faired versions, aimed at the entry level sportsbike markets in the emerging world and learner bike markets in the developed world. As their names suggest, the RC 125, RC 200 and the RC 390 will be based on the KTM Duke 125, Duke 200 and the Duke 390 respectively.



Since KTM's RC range of new, small capacity sportsbikes will be based on the Duke nakeds, changes to the RC range will be mainly in the styling department. The major styling changes include new tanks, full fairings, revised graphics and signage. Rear set footpegs and clip-on handlebars are the two other changes that'll be common to all three bikes in the small capacity KTM RC range. Engines, transmissions and cycle parts such as the upside down front forks and monoshock rear suspension will be borrowed from the Duke range.



Notably, the RC range of full-faired sportsbikes will be made at Bajaj Auto's Chakan factory, as Bajaj produces all the road-going small capacity motorcycles that KTM sells worldwide. Notably, Bajaj Auto holds a 48 % stake in KTM and provides the latter access to low cost-high quality sourcing and manufacturing. KTM, for its part, provides Bajaj Auto cutting edge motorcycle technology honed in the cut throat world of competitive motorcycle racing.



KTM and Bajaj launch motorcycles showcased at the EICMA in the subsequent year. A similar strategy is likely to be in place for the RC range of small capacity sportsbikes. Expect Bajaj Auto and KTM to launch the RC 200 and RC 390 in India next year. The KTM RC range of sportsbikes could be priced slightly higher than the equivalent Dukes due to the additional cost of the full fairing and other aggregates.

KTM is also working on an Adventure range of small capacity motorcycles, again based on the entry-level Dukes. The Adventure range of motorcycles based on the Duke platform are likely to have higher ground clearance, extended range fuel tanks, an upright seating position and other changes to make them suitable for long distance touring. The first of the Duke (125, 200 and 390) based Adventure line of KTMs are likely to debut in EICMA 2014, with official launches in India and elsewhere slated to happen in 2015.

The images and spec details have been leaked from the motorcycle manufacturer’s Canadian website, and we have a number of details on the now A2 legal bike. Yes you read it right. Unlike the D390 which needed a restrictor to be A2 legal, the new RC390 at 147kg and 43PS (32KW) peak power just about manages to stay under the o.2KW/kg power/weight ration mandatory for a bike to be A2 legal.A2 category is a European specification for medium sized bikes. Missing the A2 category would have meant the new KTM missing out on most of the vital 19-23 years age group. This makes the RC390 the sportiest option for the A2 license holders.

The leaked images, which appeared on visordown.com, show that the RC390 frame, while similar to the D390’s steel trellis frame, has been modified to realize its complete racing potential, better ergonomics and a more dynamic handling. The steering head angle has been increased to 66.5 degrees which results in shorter trail and wheelbase, and increased ground clearance.

Another significant change from the Duke 390 is the brand new clip on handlebars that enable a sporty and aggressive riding position. This coupled with the new and visually appealing forged aluminium triple clamps guarantee a pure supersport racing feeling.

The RC390 gets the same single-cylinder, liquid cooled 375cc four-stroke engine as the Duke 390. The brilliant engine comes with twin overhead camshafts, four valves and electronic fuel injection delivers 43PS max power and thanks to the balancer shaft, delivers the highest level of smoothness. The engine is equipped with an electric starter powered by a 12V/6Ah battery.

Other significant changes include a new 9.5 litre steel fuel tank with 1.5 litre reserve, specifically developed for the RC, brand new twin headlight for the supersport look and integrated blinkers. It also gets a brand new bodywork, footrests and pedals that help the RC master extreme cornering by allowing a greater leaning angle.

The telescopic fork, 100 per cent digital LCD display with an rpm alert indicating the best moment for shifting up, the light alloy swing arm, 17in alloys with Metzeler tyres (110mm front, 150mm rear), and ABS are standard.

Looks same as the ADAC Cup machines, except for the underslung exhaust and the stickering. Me likesta! Schumi of Overdrive goes on to say in the comments section below the article that it will be showcased on November 5 and be launched as soon as March-April '14!

Specs are same as the D390, but no upgrade on the fuel tank issue (still <10litres), or so it seems!

Now for the pricing! Lets hope they get it under 2.5L (how much does a fairing cost?) and not closer to 3L!
