I agree 80k is too much, but the cost depends on the base vehicle condition and the labor. I had done cosmetic upgrade with bare minimum mechanical repairs for as low as 15k and full restoration for upwards of 60k and then the add-ons (5s GB, disc brake, etc) for few more grands.

In my case I had to spend close to 3~4k for transportation (painting, platting, spares purchase, etc) alone since I stay in suburbs.

Re: 1998 Yamaha RX135 Restoration completed : Now, 5 speed converted!

Guys have a query here. I have rebored my rx 135 engine and piston to 1.5 size. My mechanic is asking me to put some castor oil along with 2t oil to petrol. He suggested a ratio of 20ml castor oil :40 ml 2T oil: 1 liter petrol. He says it will make the engine smoother through the run in period. Need some advice on this.

Yes, your mechanic has given you a correct advise. I am not an expert but from my past experiences with 2 strokes I have come to understand this: Aluminium pistons tend to expand in high heat, and hence with the thicker oil the initial break-in of the piston rings and the cylinder walls happens better, thereby causing less scratches or damages which happen in a fresh pair.

Any oil which has higher viscosity will help.

Re: 1998 Yamaha RX135 Restoration completed : Now, 5 speed converted!

Namaskaram.
That motorcycle of yours is am exact xerox of my mo-bike!
I was discussing a dilemma with my RX135 on the forum when I discovered your thread and learned about your epic restoration story.
I too am planning a restoration for my motorcycle. It is fifteen years old, not in a bad condition, but could use some repairs.
How much did you spend on your mo-bike? What are some main parts you changed? Will I be able to get a stock carburetor?
Congratulations again, on a grand job on your RX135!

All the best.
Spent a fortune on this particular bike since it was my first full restoration and learnt a lot with mistakes, some parts failed / didn't meet my expectation due to poor workmanship so changed it again and again, upgraded in multiple phases (5s GB, Disc brake, 16" rims, shocks, etc) So couldn't narrow down at exact cost with this bike.

But for the other bikes I spent from 30k to 55k depending on the condition of the bike (3 years back)

Except the frame and fittings, engine & transmission, silencer, pillion holder everything else was changed

Mikuni is not available easily. if available, it was quoted a hand and led.
Mikcarb is available for around 2k. Couple of weeks back I purchased RX100 Mikcarb carburetor for 1.9k (MRP was 1993 or something) Last time I purchased the same carb for around 1.4k

RX spares price is raising like anything. MRP of Pricol make speedometer is 1.1k now, which used to be 550 earlier. So a proper restoration with genuine parts should cost upwards of 60k now is what I believe.

Do let me know for any support to restore your bike.

Wonderful restoration Mr Boss.
I too have a 1998 RX135 (maroon). Have not used much since last 10 years, it is not in a good condition, with many rusted parts. I would like to restore it to the original glory. Can you please suggest me a good and trusted mechanic in Bangalore. Thanks in Advance.

Re: 1998 Yamaha RX135 Restoration completed : Now, 5 speed converted!

Update after the lockdown and almost 1 year hibernation

We left to hometown during May'20 and I visited once during Oct'20 and cleaned the bike, started and rode for a couple of km and left again.

This was the condition when we returned back during mid of Mar'21

Almost every chrome part started rusting (applied oil over chrome parts during the last visit, but the damage was already done)
