Re: My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200

Wow, that is truly a rare bike! A 250 Daytona Special in India? Would have never imagined in my wildest dreams! Where is this? Does this belong to you?

Yes, its in India and now part of the collection…

Story goes like this about this motorcycle….

The Yamaha 250 Daytona Special is a limited edition two-stroke parallel twin paired 6 speed transmission Motorcycle that was created in 1979 made for the famous American Daytona show and unlike the Daytona 400 (only 5000 produced), the 250 was just 6 factory production bikes ever produced! (This is something I am trying to get it verified but people I have enquired with along with the ones in US have never heard of it. So, maybe Yamaha, Japan did something crazy like this back in the day.)

The body work resembles the championship bikes of Yamaha TZ250 which dominated the racing championship and went with the Yamaha iconic race colour schemes.

The chassis 3M3 is one unique identifier of this unique special model. It’s has alloy wheels and a stock electronic ignition! Shares the same chassis which is on the Yamaha RD400 which is an evolution to the RD350, it was way ahead of its time with a disc break in front and as well as the rear. Crazy part being the rear disc is the same size as the front.

This very bike was part of the bike series that was sent by Yamaha Japan to Escorts India back in the early 80s as part of the market research strategy before Escorts India then chose the RD350B version and RX 100 for launch on Indian soil. (This part I have got it verified from Yamaha, India who had received 38 different motorcycles including this one for Research & Development and Escorts India was supposed to send them back to Japan and they never did and the bikes were subsequently sold to individuals over the years).

For a 45 year old bike its been very well preserved and maintained in pristine condition by the previous owners with low miles with no modifications and original parts from the factory.. It sounds phenomenal and I hope to preserve it like this for the next 45 years as this is by far one of the oldest Yamaha motorcycles in India to be sold by the company directly and one which started it all for Escorts/Yamaha, India

Wow, that is some really crazy information you have shared! I never imagined that the bikes Escorts India got for R&D or Testing in the 80s would have still survived. I am dying to know how you laid your hands on this beauty!!? Now I am going to dream about this bike for the next few months for sure.
I would love to see this bike in person. In the mean time, would love to hear the sound if you have a video please do upload it!

Congratulations SnS_12 on getting yet another rare bike! You really have a thing for buying bikes that have some unique history in our country. For a 45-year-old bike, it looks like it has just been rolled out of the factory! No doubt it is in good hands, given how well you take care of your bikes. Looking forward to seeing this in person as well.

PS: A quick Google search tells me RD 350 and RD 400 can help your RD collection.

There maybe a few more that would have survived as a lot of these bikes end up in a private collection where they are stored away for ever from public eye. I got introduced to this bike because of a TZR 250 3MA which popped up for sale but as luck would have it the day I went to check it out someone had already deposited a token for it that very morning. I felt terrible hearing that but was told that there is a lot more on offer and was introduced to a collection of total of 9 Yamaha two strokes including the TZR. I was gobsmacked just looking at the whole collection that I didn't know what to even look at or consider because if I had the place to park them I would have bought the remaining 8 right there..

But, once I got into my senses I zeroed down on one particular one from the collection as I was told even that one was for sale if I wanted and it was an RZV 500R..

Bikes with some crazy history is what gets my attention immediately but in the case of the Daytona it wasn't so as I even though heard it is just 1 of 6 in the world my eyes were glued on the RZV 500R. But, destiny had a different plan already set in motion for me.

Over the days along with the RZV I also finalized on a RZ 350 YPVS which was a hybrid setup and a bike I would have built the same way if I had it to get more performance out of it just like I have done on my other bikes. But I took time as I was not 100% sure on the RZV because of the price being quoted and the bike required some work to be bought back in the condition I would be happy with and that would have required a few more lacs.

Eventually, I worked out a price over the weekend for both bikes and made an offer only to hear that the RZV was sold and the buyer got a higher price than his quoted price.

My immediate response was then what about the RZ and was told that was gone too and was bought by none other than MS Dhoni. How things changed over a weekend and I was just cursing my bad luck initially because even with money in hand I couldn't buy the bikes I wanted. Eventually, I just took it as a sign that the bikes were never meant for me and something better awaited and I had to be patient.

The Daytona maybe never caught the eye of other enthusiast including Dhoni because it was a 250cc aircooled RD and a reason why I never showed interest in it earlier was that I already had a RD 200 but when I saw the details on the bike I knew I had to move fast to get this one as it may have been one of two aircooled RD's in the collection and with the smallest cc but had a very interesting and important history associated with it.

In the end just believe in the process and follow your destiny

On the RD 200 sadly we don’t know the actual Year of make or colour as this has not been captured in the RC book and only the date of registration is shown as 1982. Hence, we were not sure what colour to paint then and neither did I have a fancy budget which was evident from the build. This bike has been abused and mishandled by previous owners and mechanics and that is one of the reasons why the gearbox broke too.

That was really ironic considering this was a working bike when I got it but with RX 100 pistons and just few months before that I got the RD 125, where the bike had everything original on it and a single owner bike but sadly in non running state and lot of parts like the tank and silencers were rusted beyond repair.

The RD 125 was my second bike and the first that I ever bought with my own money but never ever got to finish the rebuild process that we had started over 15 years back. But, I guess everything happens when is supposed too and finally this bike will be on the road again after decades of being neglected.

I had already ordered all the engine parts back in 2010 and the main things that we needed was a tank and the exhaust mufflers. The original tank we did try saving it but the beautiful Titanium paint shade we had done on it never lasted long and it bubbled up eventually thanks to the rust on the base metal. I have been on the lookout for a good quality tank for long but it seems getting hold of the coffin design tank found on the RD 125 DX is not easy. However, my friend in Paris found one eventually, which has a lovely red paint on it which believe it or not is the actual factory colour of this bike and I considered it as a sign and have decided to paint the bike red now. Only challenge left is to get the tank to India from Paris…

On the exhaust the mufflers had rusted very badly so there was no chance of using them so either we had to make one or get a used set. So, I got back to shopping at Ebay and found a decent complete set with mounting brackets in the US and after a long time ordered it directly to my place in India. Paid customs and shipping cost but was worth it.

Now, since the bike rebuild was halted for so many years a lot of parts was lying either with me or at my friends place. The engine mostly was at my friend’s place with everything else including the frame at my place. So, in this split storage we were unable to locate some critical engine components like the clutch bell and primary gear, carbs etc. My friend was sure I had taken them with me as he could not locate them with other parts. I couldn’t recollect either that I had stored them at my place as I knew the tank side panels mudguards etc are with me along with some other parts but never recollected seeing these parts. We thought we had lost these parts and this rebuild would never be completed only for my good luck to be on my side once again as the parts were always under my own bed and I have been sleeping over them for over a decade now.

This build will be done simultaneously to my RZ 350 rebuild and we plan to first get the engine done up before moving on to the cosmetic parts.

Some pictures for now…

The bare chassis parked in one corner of the garage next to the Ducati 848 EVO. Don’t miss the original mudguard with the period correct front number plate. White on black back in the good old days with an old Bombay registration number.

Re: My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200

Parts Shopping

Since I have been on a part shopping spree for the Daytona and RZ I decided it’s the right time to buy and fix some missing parts for the RD 200 as well. Since, the 200 was not in the best of shape when I got it a lot of parts were missing, damaged or from other bikes. With a list of parts I needed I sat down surfing Ebay over the past few weeks and got almost most of the stuff I was looking for.

Here is a list of parts that I have ordered for the RD 200 and RD 125:

a) Used clutch cover for the RD 200 as the one on the bike came damaged at the kick mounting when I got it

b) OE new Right side panel for the RD 200 as the one on the bike currently is from the RD 350.

c) OE new Oil tank for the RD 200 as the one on the bike is from the RD 350.

d) Used main stand with centre pin and spring for the RD 200 as the original one was missing on the bike and is currently using a RX main stand

e) OE mufflers for the RD 200 as we had made a set since the bike only had the silencers when I bought it.

f) Used speedometer set with mounting bracket for the RD 200. The bike had the OE meters with bracket but were nit working and I am currently using the RD 125 meters which are also not functioning properly. Further, I had bought a OE new set along with a extra tachometer a decade which I will still keep as a backup for now.

g) New OE only speedometer for the RD 125 along with a new mounting bracket. I have a new set which I had bought a decade ago as well.

Now, the dilemma is that if I put these parts on the RD 200 I will have to paint the bike as well along with the RD 125.

Some pictures of the parts…

Used clutch cover for the 200. Will need some cleaning, followed by sand blasting and painting or powder coating

Has the oil pump and tachometer cable gear.

My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200-img_3205.jpeg

New speedometer only for the 125

The back is chrome though and the bike originally had a black set

My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200-img_3193.jpeg

New meter mounting bracket for the 125. Damping rubbers I am ordering from Yambits

My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200-img_3200.jpeg

New meter set for the 200 with an extra tachometer. Was a good investment looking at the prices now

My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200-img_3183.jpeg

New black meter set for the 125 which will go on the bike. Again a good investment as getting a new set in black is proving very difficult

Re: My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200

First batch of parts arrive from Thailand

The side panel set for the RD 200 and new speedometer for the RD 125 I got from the same buyer in Thailand. Helped me save some $15 in shipping and I asked the seller to invoice the three items at $150 which he kindly obliged too and helped me save in custom duty . Also, the parts arrived in 12 days, which is not bad.

Some pictures…

The package from Thailand. Packing internally could have been better

But everything arrived safely

Like the colour and maybe I will repaint it in the same shade or maybe yellow? Have to figure out what will I do for the plastic fins for both panels which get mounted on the front of them

My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200-img_3262.jpeg

The oil cap and mounting rubbers will be ordered from Yambits

My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200-img_3263.jpeg

Back side

My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200-img_3264.jpeg

Part number of the oil tank

My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200-img_3256.jpeg

The damages over and above the invoice, while custom duty charged is 10% IGST is a 28% so over all a little over 50% additional cost. That is why it’s better to carry your own parts whenever possible.

Re: My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200

Santa arrived early

Now, except for the RD 125 tank I have received all the parts I had ordered for the RD 125 and RD 200. With the RZ rebuild hitting a roadblock the 125 and 200 work will get delayed as well as we want to get the RZ ready before we move on to the next one.

For now enjoy the pictures and we will see some action soon on this thread 🤞…

First of the final set of parcels to arrive was the RD 200 used clutch cover. Part costed me less than $10 but still got charged customs

Used working OE meter set for the RD200

My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200-img_4290.jpeg

The final one that arrived today with some nominal custom charges as the part costs on $15 but came in such a bog box that for a moment I thought the parcel belonged to someone else. Also, interestingly the meters and cup holders in the above images which even though costed much more didn’t attract any customs. Because they came form Australia maybe?

Re: My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200

Time to finish a project started 15 years ago

My RD 125 is my second bike which I had bought in a non running condition back in 2006 and was supposed to be restored back in 2010 post completion of the RD 200 rebuild but due to unavoidable circumstances the project could never be completed and was abandoned and the bike just stood in a corner collecting dust.

But, now that my RZ 350 project is completed we can now focus on the RD 125 and also get some OE cosmetic parts fitted on the RD 200 followed by a new paint scheme. All the parts accept for the fuel tank for the RD 125 are here but till that time we shall get the parts sandblasted followed by powder coating to get the bike standing again. The restoration of the RD 125 shouldn’t be as complex or as challenging like the RZ 350 and we hope to get the bike ready by early🤞.

Will keep the thread updated as the build progresses and for now sharing a few pictures of the bikes…

Its time to finally wake up after decades of neglect

The RD 350 panels will make way for the original ones finally

RD 350 oil tank will be replaced by the OE one. Believe it or not but both the dents on the tank and the oil tank were created by the RD 125 when it fell on the RD 200 in the workshop many moons back.

I could have ridden the RD 200 to the workshop but to save time decided to send it on the tow truck along with the RD 125 frame.

Also, avoided another trip in the car to drop off parts

Re: My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200

Side panels have now been fitted as per the OE factory mounting points. Slight modifications had to be done to the battery box to fit the panels as the previous mounting was as per the 350 panels. The air box however cannot be fitted back on as there is not enough space with the bigger RX carbs so will have to continue with the individual pod filters.

Now, hopefully all the parts will be dismantled and sent off for paint..

Some pictures for now…

Re: My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200

Though work is being carried out simultaneously on the RD 200 and RD 125 the RD 200 will get done first as only cosmetic work is getting done on it while the RD 125 is a complete grounds up restoration. The RD 200 parts have now gone for painting and the RD 125 engine casing will now go for sandblasting. The frame of the RD 125 has been sent to the welder to repair certain parts that have become weak over the years.

Re: My Barn Finds: Yamaha RD 125 & RD 200

What a thread! What a thread! WHAT A THREAD!
I was hooked reading this from the very first page and have been glued for the past 30 minutes.. Read all parts and updates and can't get enough of it! Salute to your passion and dedication to keep these bikes alive! It's crazy to think that this thread is active from 11 years, and I urge you to keep it so, for the love of these machines.

I checked the date on the first post and saw 2014, and read the thread much like a storybook. You have no idea of my reaction when I saw the date of the last post, yesterday!! Once again, hats off to your dedication, keep it up!
