New Bajaj Platina spotted on test run EDIT: Now launched at Rs. 44,507

Bajaj Auto has started testing a new Platina commuter motorcycle. Two test mules of the bike have been spotted - one with heavy camouflage and the other without any, leading to speculations that there could be two versions of the Platina.

Going by the images, it appears that the new Platina will not get any drastic changes in terms of styling. The bike continues with the same 5-spoke alloy wheels, telescopic fork front and dual shock rear suspension and other fittings. However, the bike is likely to get new decals and colour options.

An engine upgrade could be on the cards as well. There could be a new 100 cc engine with more power and better efficiency figures. Additionally, a larger engine displacing 125 cc (borrowed from the Discover 125M) could also be used.

It is unclear when the new Platina will be introduced into the market. If media speculation is anything to go by, it will be in the first half of 2015.

Another mileage friendly bike!

Quote:
Bajaj has now launched the 2015 Platina ES (Electric Start) variant that is claimed to be the 'World's Mileage Champion'.

Launched at Rs. 44,507 (ex-showroom, Delhi), the new Platina ES is claimed to return a mind-blowing 96.9Km/l (ARAI certified), which makes it the most-fuel efficient bike ever in India.

Powering the Platina ES is a new 102cc single-cylinder with Bajaj's DTSi technology and ExhausTEC. The similar engine also powers the Discover 100M, but in a higher state of tune - 9bhp and 9.02Nm. In the case of Platina ES, the engine is tuned to return 8bhp and 8.7Nm.

I would be surprised if any of us would manage to squeeze even 75 kms to a liter, forget 90. Why advertise such? There still would be buyers if realistic figures would be quoted.

Lol!

The current breed of Splendor's give 70+ kmpl so to put the Platina in the eyes of the public that FE figure must be higher to justify the greatest question "Kitna Deti hai?!".

And to get this figure ARAI is the best as they test in a condition that is difficult on Indian roads in reality - 40kmph constant, no traffic/start-stop, single rider with weight hovering between 60-65 kgs.

The figure of 90+ kmpl will pull in many onto the showrooms. No doubt!

re: New Bajaj Platina spotted on test run EDIT: Now launched at Rs. 44,507

DTSi is a trouble-some engine in smaller capacity bike. My XCD engine needed to be bored every 25K kms. The engine life is much smaller compared with single spark engines, and even the power advantage is also minuscule.

The single-spark 100cc Platina used to maintain consistently monthly sales of 50K without any advertisement for nearly seven years while the DTSi engines in Discover 100, 125, XCD, Platina 125, all failed to give consistent monthly sales and after the initial euphoria had to be phased out. I really don't know what the Bajaj think tank is doing. If they are replacing the current single spark Platina 100 with this 102 DTSi, they may as well kiss good-bye to the Platina's consistent 50K sales.

The new Bajaj Platina ES seems to be the first of the 6 launches planned by the company in the next six months. The Platina ES gets a slew of mechanical changes, but what is more interesting is the fuel efficiency Bajaj claims – 96.9 km/l

Bajaj needs a new brand with better market strategy for their 100cc range. I don't think Platina has enough brand recall value to compete against the Hero's, or even the Honda's, 100cc bikes. The Discover has also been flogged enough, IMO.

re: New Bajaj Platina spotted on test run EDIT: Now launched at Rs. 44,507

Here are the six bikes that Bajaj will be launching over the next six months:
1. Bajaj Pulsar 200 SS
2. Bajaj Platina 100
3. Bajaj Pulsar 400 SS
4. Bajaj Pulsar CS 400
5. Bajaj Pulsar 150NS
6. Bajaj Discover 100

I don't see how any of these launches will help Bajaj to recover their lost market share. Discover and Platina 100's are as such replacing existing variants and I don't see a single reason why it will draw new audience, especially from Hero and Honda. Same thing applies to Pulsar 150 NS which would be replacing the sales of the current Pulsar 150 only. How much more sales will they achieve through Pulsar 200 SS when already have the 200 NS? Do they honestly think 400 CS and SS will help increase market share? Whatever extra sales they will get by these two variants, 50% will be at the expense of KTM Duke 390. Except 400, none of those models are exactly new launches or something that will help Bajaj to recapture their lost market share.

No, they don't. I have checked with quite a few owners and the mileage is in the mid - high 50's (90% of the cases).

My Splendor used to regularly return ~73 KPL till the 60k KM mark on the odo, then started to drop towards the mid 60's. Around 114k on the odo I rebuilt the engine by replacing the bore and piston. Now it gives only around 55 KMPL.

That is when I enquired with the owners of new Splendors. No wonder my bike also currently returns similar figures, since it has the same engine parts as the new bikes.
