Re: Gujarat Police to ride Harley-Davidsons

They could have got a few Dukes instead but obviously, the VVIPS need something flashy to escorts their 7 series. Way to go gujrati government, why not also get a Zo6 as an interceptor?

How will this be of any use to effective policing? Will be eye candy for parades and motorcades. Waste of tax payers money.

Such a waste of tax payers money. It is expensive and 750CC is too much and true potential will never be used.

Unfortunately I have a low opinion of the police after 2 incidents I came across. But this is just wrong on so many counts. Not only are they gobbling up the tax payer's money but also they'll use it for VIP escorts only. Now I don't mind police people spending on equipment, why only a limited no of bikes? If they would have got the bikes for the whole dept it would make sense.

Also HD could have done a la Lamborghini and donated some bikes. This is the best IMO. Brand positioning as well as good vehicles for the police.

But alas that's not to happen. I'm sure these bikes will be in a sorry state after a year or more.

OT - isn't there a cop in Mumbai who rides a ninja? I think a biker policeman would be better suited to handle such machines as they need regular pampering.

Re: Gujarat Police to ride Harley-Davidsons

A complete waste. Not only would it be used for just ceremonies (read colossal wastage of our tax money) but it would simply rot away as the cost of maintaining just one bike would be almost equivalent to maintaining the entire old lot. We all know how often the sarkaari vehicles need parts replacements.

Re: Gujarat Police to ride Harley-Davidsons

What about "Make in India" in this case!?
Couldn't they get some custom made Enfields or Bajajs?
(like someone mentioned earlier - properly prepped Thunderbirds / Desert Storms / AS200-Bajaj?)

I am definitely in support of getting them better bikes and/or cars.
I am still trying to understand, how does it justify getting Harleys (even select few)?

Is it like they already have 250 cc / 500 cc bikes which cannot keep up with the "speeds" here?
OR there are no intermediate bikes which can offer good ergonomics/power/image balance?

Ace.

A waste of tax-payers money .

Having the cops ride an HD is not going to improve the service provided even one bit. They will just look good, thats all. Agreed, cops might need speed at times and for that, they can use Hero Karizmas.

Re: Gujarat Police to ride Harley-Davidsons

I wonder how much money exchanged hands between the Govt and the Harley Davidson.

HD gets free advertisements and marketing, as usual the Govt is there to help them increase the profits. Of course the Govt pays via tax money, so no one is there to ask about alternatives.

Re: Gujarat Police to ride Harley-Davidsons

HARLEY! My, My!! well as far as creating the shock/awe factor is concerned Gujrat Government/ Police did a neat job. But reality check, is it at all needed? Rather equipping the state police with latest weaponry ( getting over the Lee-Enfields even the INSAS & Indian made copy of browning FN's), combat suites, and night vision equipment, and spending the rest of the amount in getting the Pulsars etc. to ride would have been a much sane decision. But if this procurement is restricted to a few bikes for escorting purpose then its okay I guess. A tad show off is required once in a while. Even when we were kids and a few RD 350's were introduced by Kolkata Traffic Police, we were awed.

I also see a Bonneville T100 in the background with those cheap old school side panniers that look like suitcases. I wonder if that Bonnie belongs to the Gujarat Police too.
