Royal Enfield to invest Rs 500 Crore; set up 2 tech centres

Eicher motors subsidiary Royal Enfield has been enjoying a strong sales trajectory. To keep the momentum going, the Chennai based motorcycle maker plans to invest Rs 500 Crore this year on a variety of activities. These activities include the setting up of two technology centres and increasing its production capacity to 4.5 lakh units annually, from the current 4 lakh units per annum.

The plans were confirmed by Eicher Motors Managing Director & CEO Siddhartha Lal and the technology centres will be set up in Chennai and the UK. The larger centre will be at a new 4.5 acre property that the company has acquired on Old Mahabalipuram Road in Chennai and will be operational by the second quarter of 2016. The UK centre will be located in Leicestershire.

The investment comes in at a golden age for the brand, which is looking to establish itself as a stalwart in mid-size motorcycling globally.

R&D = packaging old wine in a new bottle?
Any plans of larger engines?

If they invested a fraction of that into their quality management , I think it would go a long way in establishing the brand as a global player. Heck, I'd definitely buy one then.

It's indeed a very good news that RE R&D is getting it's due attention. RE is lucky to have strong sales and demand. But they should pull up their socks!
Sooner or later they have to equip bikes with ABS, but before that they have to work out a working braking system, the rear brakes are non-existent in all RE models... They can invite some Custom houses from all over the world who modify RE's so well.

Cheers

One of the indicators in the bike featured on the first post is not aligned. That should tell them what they really need to invest in.

RE finally decided be a bit serious about R&D. Hiring Pierre Terblanche, New (most probably) to be launched "Himalayan" etc, It sure makes RE fans very happy. Royal Enfield on the right track. Bravo Siddhartha Lal

Re: Royal Enfield to invest Rs 500 Crore; set up 2 tech centres

As a RE motorcycle user since past many years and riding their different models right from G2, B1 and other Standard CI's inaddition to AVL and the latest (although now not so new) UCE models. I feel there is a need for RE to concentrate more on quality right from the engine and body to small parts like bits and screws. Yes ofcourse they should also look at creating a new platform by bringing in new models with an updated engine. The competitors are already planning their models to rival RE and lest RE comes out with new models and engines they will be hammered down like it happened to them in the late 90's. The only way to keep up is to invest big time in R&D and come up with new engine configurations. One thing that pops to my mind is a OHC(overhead camshaft) engine having long stroke and a free revving nature. As mentioned elsewhere they can also come up with twin-cylinder engines it can be a v twin or a parallel twin(preferred by me).

RE has come a longway from 4 speed Cast Iron engines to 5 speed UCE engines but the progress has been slow indeed. They need to brace up and offer new motorcycles with refreshed engines having atleast two configurations. In today's world "slow and steady wins the race holds no value"(I am in no way associating this with motorcycle speed ). The world has moved ahead and so should RE.

This is a repost since I have already posted it in another thread.

Visor down has scooped about an upcoming 410cc OHC and a parallel twin motor. They claim that these motors are already in the 'advanced phase of development'.
