Restoring my Enfield Fury DX 175

Hi all,

This is the story of my 1987 Enfield Fury DX175 restoration. The bike was with a friend of mine. He had posted it on olx. I went to see the bike.. Liked it, bought it the very next day paying a huge amount The sad part is that I had to pay extra for some extra spares that were lying with him. Spares like HL Visor etc. Here is the pic of the bike & some spares when i went to see her for the first time.

re: Restoring my Enfield Fury DX 175

The very next day, loaded the bike in an auto & dropped it at my mechanic friend Anand's home. We started the rebuild. Engine was strong apart from minor electrical glitches. We gave her a thorough wash & started the painting work. We did the frame painting by our own & the tank , side panels, wheels etc were given off to the professionals. I opted for the metallic Orange colour & it did come out very well. Working on the sticker work was a pain as the OE stickers were no longer available nor i had the option to make a model out of a running bike as Furys have become a rare sight on road. But i did complete it with the help of a renowned vinyl worker. He did a very good job. Paid 600rs for the sticker work alone

re: Restoring my Enfield Fury DX 175

In between, i picked up a very good spare engine & a petrol tank for my fury as back up. I paid 10k for these. Moreover, i got another abandoned fury [without papers] from a friend of mine paying another 20k. I haven't decided what to do with it yet. I have no plans to restore my second fury as of now. This whole fury project has already made a deep hole in my pocket . I have also picked up some NOS spare parts. Mostly from Bangalore.

re: Restoring my Enfield Fury DX 175

Hey Arun, it's good to see the resurrection of a Fury after so many years. I rode one for about 11-12 years, from 1989 and at that time it was a real blast, faster than anything else on the road, except for the RD350 (of course in those days we didn't have all the bikes and cars that we see on the roads today). I used to do Mumbai-Pune in 2 hours, non stop on her. She was in almost mint condition when I sold her, sadly, since work pressures and time constraints meant I got to ride her only on some weekends.
Hope to see some more pics of the complete bike and read your experiences on her.

BTW, I'm surprised yours is a 1987 model. I had bought mine in '89 as soon as it was released in Mumbai, as I was impressed by her smaller sibling, the Explorer, which I was riding then.
Cheers

Arun, this is one thread I have been waiting for for long! Hope to see more pictures soon. Don't bother about the hole in the pocket - it will mend itself with time. But the joy of riding that beauty is going to be priceless!!

Thanks for correcting me. Its a 1988 model infact. I just checked the RC. The date of registration is 6-5-1988. May be Enfield India launched the bike in the Southern states first and then would've went ahead with an All-India launch.

Re: Restoring my Enfield Fury DX 175

As of now, the bike has reached the electrician to do a complete wiring job. The coils, cdi etc are all just fine. But the wiring, ignition switch etc needs attention. My Fury speedo meter Assy is missing the tachometer unit. I have now installed an Explorer speedometer for the time being, for the sake of visual appeal. The sad part is that i'm yet to receive an OE Head light unit of Fury DX175. All i could grab was an Explorer unit. The guy, from whom i bought it, claimed that its a Fury Unit itself. Got conned indeed. This one is not a proper fit on Fury even though they look almost same in the first glance. Also, i have imported an owner's manual for Zundapp KS175 which unfortunately is in German

I wish I could turn back the clock, since I had quite a few spare parts as well as exploded view plans of the engine, front suspension, etc. I could have given them to you instead of the guy I sold my bike to ;-)

About your manual, my wife does German-to-English translations. She is rather busy at the moment but if you have any particular bits to be translated urgently she will be happy to oblige.
Cheers

Re: Restoring my Enfield Fury DX 175

Had a major relief. The Head light unit did fit in the end. Its the proper one for Fury itself. The problem was that the headlight ears were fixed upside down making it difficult to fix the speedometer. Also, tried the Headlight mask for the first time. Its a snug fit. We need to fabricate proper side clamps for it though. I have installed a brand new imported Yamaha RXK Mikuni carb on it [the OE VM28 carb is a bit leaky. I can switch to it later if i need]. Also fixed the original air filter box [with a UNI pod filter inside]. A Hero Honda Battery holder bracket was bought & fixed it properly. I bought an Exide 2.5Ah maintenance free battery[ 36 months' warranty]. Costed me 890rs.

Re: Restoring my Enfield Fury DX 175

Hi,

The bike has been finished at last. A major achievement was the fabrication of the HL Visor glass. It was made using plexi glass [polycarbonate] sheet via heat-bending method. A fabulous DIY work by my mechanic Anand Lal. Rear indicator stay had to be hand made using steel pipe. Fixed the OE Fury indicators itself. The front ones are Indian made ones. The rear are German makes which are a bit faded. Both look the same. Fixed the number plates, chain cover lower half etc. Had a clean-up. Took a couple of pics. And hit the road. Sadly, Extreme vibrations were there. Its an old bike. So, only a Trial & error method would work. So, decided to correct those too before the fitness test, even though the engine needs to be removed from the Chassis. Removed the engine today. Found out the culprit to be a worn out front sprocket. There was too much play. Luckily I had good piece from the spare engine i have. Handed it over to the mechanic. The rear engine axle bushings need to be replaced too. Hopefully we can make those in lathe tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Re: Restoring my Enfield Fury DX 175

Ahh fantastic choice of color, did the fury actually come in this color?

By the way, hope you have kept a spare Gear Box.

Congrats she looks too good

Re: Restoring my Enfield Fury DX 175

No. But i have seen the Zundapp KS125s in this colour. I have a complete spare engine including gear box and all stuff. So, no worries there. Moreover, the piston inside my bike's current block is brand new. I believe the previous owner did that. A boon anyways.
