KTM Duke 200 & 390 get updates for 2015

Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM has updated its Duke 390 and 200 motorcycles. The company has made changes to the two bikes based on feedback from customers.

As we have already reported, the Duke 390 has been given a slipper clutch. Click her to join the discussion on the addition of the slipper clutch on the Duke 390. The slipper clutch is used to prevent the rear wheel of a bike from locking up during extreme downshifting / engine braking scenarios. Also known as the back torque limiter, it allows the clutch to slip until the engine speed matches the speed of the bike and doubles up as a safety mechanism. This enables the rider to downshift aggressively and keep the bike stable under heavy braking/spirited riding sessions.

Coming to the Duke 200, the bike now comes with a new seat that features a stiffened base and thicker foam, new handlebar grips, new indicators that can resist water penetration, a reduced throttle opening of 77 degree, better front fork seals and a new engine generator. These minor changes are likely to make the Duke 200 more comfortable and better to ride. The only sore point is that KTM has not given the bike a slipper clutch like its larger sibling.

Since the Duke 200 and 390 are produced with a lot of locally manufactured parts, they are priced competitively. With the updates, the prices have gone up marginally, but, paying a little more for improved products is something enthusiasts won't mind.

Both the RC and Duke 390 get slipper clutch.

Whats commendable is such high end features for such affordable competitive prices makes the KTM a winner by huge margin.

Also the way KTM has responded to the feedback of customers regarding minute details like the seats cushioning shows the commitment of the manufacturer to improvise and produce a better product.

Re: KTM Duke 200 & 390 get updates for 2015

They should have added ABS to the Duke 200. The international version of Duke 125 has ABS. Why not have the same on the 200? KTM has clearly missed an opportunity here.

By when would the price and update be available for the RC390?

Re: KTM Duke 200 & 390 get updates for 2015

Wonder what is it that the KTM390 is preparing itself against? Any way none of the closest competitors in this displacement category can claim ABS. Otherwise I should admit twins attract me a little bit with their sweet notes

Re: KTM Duke 200 & 390 get updates for 2015

I received a screenshot forward on whatsapp a few days ago in which a member of the Kriegers group has written to KTM (info@ktmindia.com) on the 11th of March asking for clarity on the slipper clutch news for the Duke / RC 390. The sender has also provided links to the same in his email which was sent from an @thekriegers.in account.

In the screenshot, the KTM India team has replied on the 12th of March saying that there is no slipper clutch planned on RCs in the immediate future and slipper clutch retro fitments are not possible.

I dont know how far this is true but its out there being circulated through the wonderful world of the internet.

Re: KTM Duke 200 & 390 get updates for 2015

Here is the list of the 20 changes that Duke 390 gets updated.

Quote:
1. The spark plug gap has been increased from 0.8 mm of the first generation model, to 1 mm on the 2015 model. An increase in spark plug gap will retard the timing. A retarded timing has many benefits. It will eliminate knocking/premature ignition. The other benefit is a cooler running engine. However, retarded timing will also make the acceleration of the bike less frantic. This is a small compromise to make in the interests of longevity and reliability of the engine.
2. The connecting rod has been made durable with a bush at the small end.
3. A major change is the addition of the slipper clutch. We’ve already detailed the benefits of the slipper clutch.
4. The design of the front fender has been changed to minimize water and dirt splashing.
5. Better material has been used on the rear fender to reduce cracking.
6. The mud guard at the rear is wider to avoid dirt from splashing onto the bike.
7. The indicators have been sealed to avoid water seepage, a problem on the first generation Duke 390.
8. The radiator fan assembly is now fitted in a way that re-directs hot air towards the bottom of the bike rather than roasting the biker’s legs.
9. Rear shock absorber gets better dust/dirt tolerance with the addition of a dust cover.
10. The rear spring of the monoshock gets a flap protector for increased dirt/dust protection.
11. The seat on the original Duke 390 used to rub against the air filter housing. In the updated model, KTM has stiffened the front seat and increased the clearance between it and the air filter housing.
12. The hand grips have been replaced with units from the RC200/390.
13. The throttle grip and the right hand switch gear will no longer mess with each other as the switch gear has been re-positioned to avoid rubbing.
14. The belly pan loosening periodically was a major source of vibration on the first generation Duke 390. In the 2015 model, KTM has changed the mounts of the belly pan to ensure that the part does not loosen due to resonance.
15. The chain cover now sits higher to avoid contact with a loose chain. This will reduce the annoying chain slap noise.
16. The collar sprocket has been redesigned.
17. The instrument cluster has been reprogrammed to accommodate the 7,500 kilometer service interval. Also, the speedometer logic has been changed to avoid unintended resetting.
18. The rubber damper on the exhaust mount has been revised to reduce vibration.
19. The bearings leading up to the output shaft are now sealed to avoid oil seepage.
20. The oil seal output shaft features a larger diameter to accommodate the new collar.

Are these changes applicable to D200 as well? I was going to book a d200 this month. The niggles plaguing KTM bikes were holding me back.

Not all of the above mentioned updates are for D200.

Do write about your purchase here when u decide sir, it would be really great to read your buying and owning the D200 experience. Eagerly awaiting for the same bro.

The following changes are found all over the net relating to the D200.

Quote:
The updates on the Duke 200 include improved seats with better foam thickness and base stiffness, new handlebar grips for better comfort, improved turn indicators to prevent water penetration, reduced throttle opening angle of 77 degree, improved front fork sealing and a new engine generator. The update have increased the price nominally but the Duke 200 still continues to be an outstanding value for money package at INR 1.41 lakhs (ex-showroom Mumbai).

The improvements, though minor, would go a long way in improving the ownership experience and feel good factor. There are no other mechanical changes to the street fighter. The 199.5 cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled motor is capable of a healthy 26 hp and 19 Nm of torque. The fuel-injected engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

So generally for FI engines they are called as engine generators which in local lingo is alternator, my 2 cents Doc (I might be wrong but generally after reading many reviews have noticed that they use generators for machines which have FI, Regulator if its Digital or plain CDI)

Will the D200 get the handle bar end weights as fitted to the D390? or can they be fitted?
