The Gogoro - Tesla of Scooters!

Gogoro Electric Smartscooters

Quote:
In 2011, Gogoro raised $50 million. Three years later, another $100 million. And yet, no one seems to have any idea what the heck Gogoro does.

Until now.

Gogoro is making two things: an electric scooter they call Smartscooter, and a battery swapping infrastructure to power it.

The scooter and the battery network are two sides of the same coin, but the scooter seems like something of a stepping stone — a first move to begin laying the foundation for its battery swapping network, which the company clearly hopes will power many a gadget — vehicular or otherwise — moving forward.

The Smartscooter

Gogoro built this thing from the ground up, from the motor to the frame.

It goes from 0-30 in 4.2 seconds, with a max speed of roughly 60mph. With both of the scooter’s two battery slots filled, it has a maximum range approaching 100 miles. It’s a city-rider, not a roadtrip horse.

GoStation

Each hub, standing about 6 feet tall and weatherproofed to its core, can hold and charge 8 batteries at a time. Hubs can be chained together.
Walk up and slip your battery into an open slot; 6 seconds later, a fully-charged battery pops out of one of the other slots.

The Battery

Built with Panasonic’s 18650 lithium-ion cells (the same used in the Tesla Model S) and a couple dozen sensors inside, each of Gogoro’s batteries comes in at about the size of a large shoebox and weighs roughly 20 pounds.

The Cost
Smartscooter will cost NTD$128,000 (about $4,140) to pre-order in Taiwan.

Quite an interesting concept. Taking the charge time issue out of the equation will definitely help make it easier to use, especially for campus towns. Should be good for tourist rental services as well. Just wondering how cost effective this will be. Apart from the cost of looking after those batteries and hubs, the real estate needed for keeping the GoStations will definitely need to be a consideration.

From the looks of it, the GoStation Hubs will not have to be owned by you as a scooter rider. Thats going to be a separate business model. You will probably pay to get your batteries charged. Also, for establishing a GoStation, the minimum required is a single hub that seemingly charges up to 8 batteries. So the business of charge stations can be started from a very small space as well. Of course the bigger ones will have many so called chained hubs (is that something like connected in series?).

As it says somewhere, that scooter is probably just the shop front. The real business is going to be the Charging Stations for the future. It uses the same batteries that Tesla does. So you can charge even those batteries. And even if it proves a small success you will soon see a surfeit of devices and vehicles that probably will use similar "standard" batteries that can be charged at the same charging stations.

I think there is a great possibility here. No wonder they are getting the funding from the VCs.

Re: The Gogoro - Tesla of Scooters!

Gogoro 2 has been launched and it comes with a battery charger.
They don't seem to have any plans to launch it in india soon.
