1992 Yamaha RX100 Restoration

'History' about this bike

The mentioned bike is a single owner bike and was brought brand new from showroom when the owner was doing his education in Hyderabad, his love towards bike was such that after studies he got the bike along with him to his home town.

The owner is a Jaggery merchant(by family business) and he got into the business along with his father after his education.

During course of time due to thyroid the owner of the bike has gained a lot of weight and he was not able to drive the bike due to his personality.

One close day when i was having a discussion with my mechanic about a bike to be bought(read: Bullet) he told me that there is one RX100 though not sure whether the owner would sell it . But any way we approached him and his first answer was NO the bike is not for sale and he didn't even responded and shut the door on our face.

Few days later what was in the mind of RX Owner god knows and he approached the mechanic and said he is ready to sell the bike and asked us to visit his home and see it.

When we approached the owner to see the bike along with my mechanic the first impression was what the S**T is it and how much he needs. I was already into multiple thoughts whether to buy the bike or not, it was complete rust bucket holes on mudguards, tank and seats were gone and the owner was asking 13,000 for the bike and it was non-negotiable.

I walked away with my cousin and discussed with my mechanic about price and decided to offer him half of his expectation, and the owner denied the offer.

Few days later the same guy bought the bike to the mechanic to get the mechanical work done and make it running(note mechanically bike was in good condition) since he hasn't used it for ages it had was evident that vehicle requires a complete restoration. But he spent close to 5,000 on mechanical's and then used it couple of days, one fine day he approached the mechanic telling he is willing to sell the bike but not for our price but he was having a different price and once again i saw the bike again though i wasn't satisfied with appearance but decided to take a plunge in restoring these beauty which was ugly.

The only good thing is all papers were in form and fit to be on road along with the expired RC(it needed an FC)

These was the condition of the bike when it was bought after the owner has spent close to 5,000 inr, imagine in what condition it was when we saw it first.

Lot of my friends and family said that this vehicle is ready to go to "Kabad khana" and its not worth restoration and making fun of me. But i believed in mechanic who said i need to invest some good quality time procuring spares and cash, and he can bring it to his charm and i plunged into my own RX100 restoration

And Now after Restoration the bike is looking like the below picture and more about the restoration in next post.

Re: 1992 Yamaha RX100 Restoration

The Restoration started by a complete stripping from mechanic side, and i started to shop for all mechanical and cosmetics items which were needed in Bangalore, since at my home town availability of spares would be an night mare.

The shopping bills came close to 17k, thanks for the friend who guided me to an automobile shop who had almost all the items and the same was shipped to the mechanic for restoration.

I had decided to paint the bike in pearl white with absolutely no mods and mechanic was suggesting me to go with black which i denied.

All the bolts & chrome items were sent to the nickelling shop and the body panels & frame were sent to the paint shop and the waiting started as these guys started the work in snail pace.

After 2 weeks of time all the parts were received let the pics talk as i was happy looking at the outcome.

Assembling the RX100:

I should say the mechanic has pulled it very well in flat 4 days and the complete vehicle was assembled and the bike started to roar.

Let the pictures talk.

The Vehicle is going for FC today and it would be coming to bangalore in next week, once the bike comes here i would be doing few more cosmetic mods.

Re: 1992 Yamaha RX100 Restoration

Congratulations on the purchase and restoration. RX looks hot in pearl white.
- Do you mind sharing the cost details? Especially the painting and plating cost, people here are literally looting for a decent job
- Is that a brand new silencer? I don't see that in plated parts, also the old one had too many dents and the recent snap is spotless.

Yes silencer, Tank & Side panels are brand new and i know that people here loot, once my friend has taken his RX for restoration(complete) to an mechanic who was RX specalist and he asked whopping 80k for the complete build.

Including my spares shopping i paid less than half the price which was quoted by a mechanic in Bangalore.

I paid 3k for plating and chrome and 5k for the complete paint(this includes frame, engine parts & all panels)

thanks for the compliment

Man, I envy you! You got a stunner there. And looks lovely in the white.

This is one bike for which an enthusiast can ditch their plans with their other half!

Took me back to my college days where this RX was the the hottest bike you can have. I'm sure for most of us, it is still the case.

Would you mind shooting a video of the exhaust note and sharing it? That is one music that no RX fan can resist.

Ride Safe!

Great restoration thread that is Speedy. Hope you are now done with the FC ..etc and enjoying the lovely ride on this classic.
Meanwhile would appreciate if you could guide me on where could we procure original spares for this bike in Bangalore? One of my cousin is planning to bring his bike back to life which is lying idle back in Kerala.
Thanks in advance.
