Hero to focus on electric scooters, joins hands with Bosch

Hero Electric will be focusing on the electric scooter market for the next few years. The company has set its eyes on the rapidly growing gearless scooter segment of the country and is aiming to launch two new products every year, for the next couple of years, starting from 2017. Through these new launches, the two-wheeler manufacturer is expecting to increase its market share in the still niche segment of electric scooters.

Hero Electric's CEO - Sohinder Gill, claims that the electric two-wheeler market in India is expected to double in terms of annual volumes, from last year's sales figure of 24,000 to around 45,000 unit sales this year. This market growth will likely be catalysed by the government's FAME initiative (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India] and the upcoming GST tax regime.

While the company hasn't revealed details about the electric scooters it plans to reveal in the near future, the CEO has indicated that some of them would be loaded with advanced technologies like wireless connection with remote diagnosis. Moreover, these new vehicles are being claimed to offer better range and more power, as compared to the current models in Hero Electric's portfolio.

The company has also joined hands with Bosch to source powertrains. This powertrain partnership is Hero Electric's effort to source better technology for its products, at a faster pace.
