Honda beats Bajaj to take No. 2 spot in motorcycle sales

Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India Ltd. (HMSIL) is claiming to have overtaken Bajaj Auto in terms of monthly motorcycle sales for April 2017. As a result, Honda is now the second largest motorcycle manufacturer in India, just behind its erstwhile partner - Hero MotoCorp.

In April 2017, Honda sold 1,83,266 motorcycles, overtaking Bajaj's corresponding sales figure of 1,61,930 units. These figures came after Bajaj recorded a year on year (YoY) sales drop of 19%. Meanwhile, Honda experienced a sales growth of 22% during the same period, thus helping it to take the second spot in the Indian motorcycle market.

Honda is aiming to invest Rs. 1,600 crore this year for increasing its production capacity. The company has also set a target of shipping 6 million units from its plants, out of which 5.7 million two-wheelers will be sold in India, while the remaining will be exported. The manufacturer is also expected to launch 4 new models by the end of this year.

re: Honda beats Bajaj to take No. 2 spot in motorcycle sales

Honda will surely overtake Hero Motocorp very soon. Bajaj, I feel, is re-positioning itself into the mass affluent segment and focusing more on profitability than numbers.

With Splendour being its only success, its only a matter of time before Hero Motocorp gets relegated into 3rd spot and playing mainly into tier 2/3 towns.

Bajaj was never at second position in any recent times. It was Hero > Honda > TVS > Bajaj. The numbers given in this article are also questionable as it is very less compared to the march figure.

Re: Honda beats Bajaj to take No. 2 spot in motorcycle sales

The source article talks about the motorcycle sales figures for April 2017 (not the cumulative two-wheeler sales). The opening post has thus been updated with the required changes.

If Hero's only success is Splendor, then Honda's is Activa right?

Hero's other successes are the HF deluxe & Passion.

The HF deluxe sells twice the number of Honda's large selling motorcycle (Shine).

To be able to beat Hero in motorcycles & 2 wheelers on the whole, Honda needs to crack the entry level motorcycle market.
Currently, their Dream series bikes are languishing on the sales chart.
