TVS coming up with an Electric Scooter. Edit: iQube launched @ Rs. 1.15 lakh

TVS is planning to launch an all new Electric vehicle by first half of 2018. According to the CEO, KN Radhakrisnan the project is on track and the production ready scooter should be launched in another 8-9 months. He has also mentioned that it will derive some of the parts from its existing line up.

Quote:
“We have a strong R&D department, and our program is underway. The new product will be launched within the next 6 to 9 months. We can only reveal more details closer to the launch date,” the TVS President and CEO told CarandBike

Better that they do. The last attempt wasn't something they would like to call as a success. (Related thread)

Though the details are very limited regarding the electric scooter, it's most likely that TVS will use the same approach like they did the last time around. All their scooters are possible candidates to receive an electric motor. The most likely one to get would be their highest selling Jupiter. Though in a price sensitive market like ours, there will be direct comparison with the existing Jupiter.

The electric scooter will definitely come at a premium, but it wouldn't work if the premium is on a slightly higher side. Also another factor which would decide the future of electric scooters is the cost of running for the electric scooter. The claimed FEs of all the TVS scooters is above 60 km/l. It is a tough task to divert the customers from the petrol engines especially in scooters.

The launch date according to the report seems pretty close. Coincidentally IMO that will collide with the introduction of Ather as well (if their plans work out as expected).

Both the manufacturers have a good chance to exploit the market if they play their cards (scooters) right.

This is good news. Mainstream manufacturers coming in is a sort of big relief of the technology and backup support coming in.
Now remains Hero Motors to junk their chinese rebadged flimsy bikes and come up with a proper one like Bajaj and TVS.

I guess Hero Electric and Hero Motors are two different entities and have no connection to them except for the common moniker.

Shouldn't the topic post read 'TVS Electric Scooter on its way'? Anyways, the timing is right. Ather is doing extremely well and I see tons of these scooters in Bengaluru. They need some serious competition from an established player.

2 days to go...

24 hours to go

Nice to see more competition...
From the 2 teasers, I took out screenshots and sketched this front view.

Also I can see that there will be a big screen on dash board similar to Ntorq. While Ntorq has horizontal screen this looks like a portrait orientation. Also a dual tone plastic covering around the screen.

Onroad price of 1,15,000 INR. Interesting pricing, expectation to sell 1000 per month and target of 100 this month in Bangalore / Karnataka.

Looking at the pictures, the TVS comes with front disk and should be compared with Bajaj premium, not urbanite which is of similar price.

More than the small price differences, it is very interesting to see how the market reacts to two different motor technologies.

Chetak uses motor similar to Ather, a central motor which drives the rear wheel ( A permanent magnet synchronous motor). Where as TVS uses the the hub motor. The hub could have less power loss and for the same rating it could give better accelerations.

I would like to ride this scooter soon, and see if the weight of the hub is not an issue for handling etc. The display between the ather and TVS looks so similar. Must not be surprised if its from same supplier with SW changes.

Overall the TVS scooter looks like futuristic design, but chetak looks like modern classic, offcourse Bajaj can always launch a KTM Orange color futuristic scooter too.

Ather uses Panasonic cells for battery, i wonder if TVS is using LG. This can make a difference during the lifetime of the scooter. Lots to learn and understand in this area.
