Rumour: Mahindra developing Gusto-based electric scooter

Mahindra is reportedly working on an all-electric scooter for the Indian market. It is likely to be based on the Gusto scooter's platform.

According to a tweet by Anand Mahindra, the electric scooter is being developed at the company's 2-wheeler R&D facility in Pune and will be marketed by Mahindra Two Wheelers Ltd. The company could also be looking into electrification of existing models.

Mahindra is the only brand in India which currently has electric passenger and commercial vehicles in its portfolio. Additionally, it also owns American electric scooter maker - Genze. The company produces electric scooters and e-bikes at their Detroit facility.

Apart from Mahindra, there are some other manufacturers gearing up to introduce electric two-wheelers in India. We had earlier reported about Bajaj Auto's plans to enter the EV space with its proposed sub-brand called Urbanite. The company plans to launch electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers by 2020. Bengaluru-based Ather Energy is likely to introduce the S340 electric scooter sometime next year, while Pune-based Tork Motorcycles could also launch the T6X electric bike in 2018.

Additionally, Hero Electric has been selling e-bikes for quite some time now. Their current offerings includes scooters like the E-Sprint and Photon that have a top speed of 45-50 km/h and a maximum range of 70 km/charge.

I am clueless what's happening here.
One fine day, they decide that they will quit the 2-wheeler market. And next month, they are again working on a new vehicle!

Re: Rumour: Mahindra developing Gusto-based electric scooter

How about localising the Genze instead of building on an ageing Gusto platform?
The Genze has all the right ingredients. For starters, it has been built from scratch to be an electric scooter. It has a removable 1.6kWh Li-ion battery, 3.5-hour charge time, a top speed of 30 mph, and a range of 30 miles.
The only thing I see as prohibitive are the costs. Genze comes at a price of $3000 and the Genze 2.0 at a cost of $3500. But that I suppose is a problem frugal engineering, localisation, and volumes can solve.
On a lighter note, if they bring the Genze to India, will they call it Genzo?

Somehow missed this image from Anand Mahindra's Twitter feed. In his words: "Pune 2 wheeler R&D facility again...a peek at the electric variant under development.."

Mahindra's electric 2-wheeler is rumoured to be an e-scooter based on the Gusto. It will reportedly be revealed before the 2020 Auto Expo.

The report also suggests that Mahindra has received the ARAI certification for the e-scooter. It is rumoured to be powered by a 3 kW electric motor and could offer a maximum range of 80 km on a single charge. The scooter could have a top speed of around 55-60 km/h.

Mahindra's Gusto-based e-scooter is expected to compete with the Bajaj Chetak and Ather 450.

Re: Rumour: Mahindra developing Gusto-based electric scooter

After one failed attempt in the two wheeler segment, they should try and make something wow, not just another me too product. With their EV expertise, they surely can make a long range expensive product, which would be niche, but enhances their reputation and not just try another cheap low range, low performance model.
Just my opinion.
