Bosch jet thruster blasts your motorcycle out of a skid

The German technology firm Bosch is developing a high-pressure jet thruster system that forces the gas out of a nozzle to help right a bike in the event of a highside or a lowside.

Why would you even need something like that? Imagine you're carving up a corner and suddenly come across a gravel patch while leaned over. Physic states, in most cases this should result in a low side crash and a couple of bruises or even broken bones, relative to the speed. Well, the engineers at Bosch don’t want that to happen and are already working on what they call an "anti-slide technology."

This system uses pressurized gas to provide lateral force and avoid a slide. Basically, the same principle spaceships operate on to manoeuvre. In this case, however, thanks to gravity, whenever the motorcycle detects a lateral slide it deploys a compressed gas thruster to counter the lateral force. The precise calculations of the slide and applying correct force are done by Bosch's inertial measurement units.

The device is similar to an airbag inflator and would also be a one-time activation. After it has gone off, you would be up for the expense of having it reloaded with pressurised gas.

Given the number of times your front wheel slides slightly, it would hopefully only activate on a big slide. While it might sound expensive and too technical, it could help prevent motorcycles being banned by the safety nannies of the future who would like to see us all in automated cars. However, the Takata airbag scandal prompts concern that a fault in the system might accidentally activate these jet thrusters and knock bikes over.

Riders who believe there is already too much technology on motorcycles won’t like it. They claim all this technology takes the joy out of riding. What does the riders in T-BHP think about the new technology? Can it be a life saver?

Whoa !!

This is quite revolutionary and sounds a little insane, but I'm sure so did Airbags and ABS when the idea first came out. As with any new technology this will take time to be introduced and I'm sure will have a lot of drawbacks initially.

Although not a big fan of this, I can see it saving some lives. Will be clued in to this for more developments ahead.

Why don't they work on replacing the bike engine with a mini-mini-mini-mini rocket engine then? Imagine a rocket engine the size of a pen, propelling the bike to insane speeds

Imagine the Highside on an advanced stage and the rider accidentally comes in front of the Jet thrust. I'm sure a thrust capable of balancing the weight of the bike can do some major damage to the rider no matter what gear they're wearing.

Interesting! It does have to be very precise and almost instant. More importantly it is to be seen how they manage to incorporate it into a motorcycle without excessive intrusion.
Considering I ride something that can touch 300 kmph and does not even have ABS this technology is truly from a different planet.

With just a bit of modification and moving the rocket boosters to the rear of the bike, these could be amazing nitro booster replacements to give amazing pick up for the bike.

Re: Bosch jet thruster blasts your motorcycle out of a skid

Wow! I'm amazed that someone thought of this.

But how is Bosch going to regulate pressure? What if it is not enough? What if the pressure is too much and causes the rider to topple onto the other side?

I can't fathom how difficult it will be to write an algorithm that takes into account the speed, grip, inertial data and releases just enough gas to stabilize the motorcycle.

On a side note, it would look quite funny. Imagine a biker almost lowsiding and being saved by a quick squirt of gas!

EDIT: Maybe make the bike fly?
