re: The Royal Enfield Classic Scrambler, now launched at Rs 1.62 - 2.07 lakhs

To my way of thinking, neither of the motorcycles shown above would fit the role of a true scrambler.

Scramblers were made for racing from point A to point B by the fastest route possible.
This could have been done by using highways, roads, trails and straight across dirt fields and thru woodlands. Whatever was shortest and fastest.

The exhaust pipe(s) and silencers were mounted high to provide ground clearance and to keep them above any water that might be encountered.

Everything possible was done to eliminate weight but because dirt, mud and water might be encountered they almost always had a front and rear mud guard (fender).
Many had a skid or "bash" plate to protect the crankcase but the decision about having one had to be weighted against the weight it would add to the machine.

A headlight was needed to make the machine road legal and to light the way if the race ran into the evening hours.

The tyres used were often block pattern tread designs that would still provide adequate grip and life on high speed roadways.

Scramblers were originally built by individuals by modifying their motorcycle for the task.
It didn't take long for major factories to produce their versions of "scramblers" although most of them just provided "the look" with their high mounted exhausts and off road style handlebars.

Should Royal Enfield try to make a scrambler? Why not? With a new high mounted exhaust system for starters, lightweight mud guards and a lightweight bash plate (and definitely some folding foot pegs) they could be off to a good start.

I'm not sure what they could do with that torpedo of a silencer though.
There's no way the existing monstrosity could be used without killing the whole image of the bike.

Royal Enfield Classic 500 Scrambler caught testing

The Royal Enfield Classic 500 Scrambler has been spotted testing on public roads for the first time.

The spy images suggest that the new Scrambler is likely to be based on the Classic 500. The most prominent changes include off-road tyres, telescopic front forks with rubber gaiters and a swept up exhaust. The test bike has a single seat. However, it appears to have a provision for mounting the rear seat.

Reports suggest that the Classic 500 Scrambler could get a BS-VI ready 499cc, single-cylinder engine. In its current version, the engine produces 27.2 BHP @ 5,250 rpm and 41.3 Nm of torque @ 4,000 rpm and is mated to a 5-speed transmission. The test bike is equipped with disc brakes at both ends.

That look very bad IMHO ! The silencer feels totally out of place.

And the idea of a scrambler out of an RE Classic 500 resulted in making an elegant looking bike a contender for weird & wacky modification thread

re: The Royal Enfield Classic Scrambler, now launched at Rs 1.62 - 2.07 lakhs

Don’t mean to hurt anyone, but RE has screwed up the design or rather looks a deliberate attempt at making a machismo (tank reminds me of it) look like a scrambler with a high mounted exhaust pipe. Looks a lot bare-bone’ish to me. RE is in full swing launching new models very frequently and shows it’s the resultant of the profits they’re posting each quarter. Way to go RE!

PS:
Rider on this bike is too puny TBH, adding up to ugly looks of the bike

re: The Royal Enfield Classic Scrambler, now launched at Rs 1.62 - 2.07 lakhs

I think all of you have mis-understood Royal Enfield here. Obviously they found that there is a segment of their buyers who want a motorcycle that is ahem, not suited to fit the missus, thus enabling solo rides all the way. Hence the launched the single seater Continental GT 535 but some even rode with a pillion hanging off the single seat (Ive seen it myself, trust me it was scary just to watch) and the saner ones insisted on a double seat.

Since that option didnt work, Royal Enfield has decided to cater to the solo riders who want to leave their missus (and worries) at home, by creating this scrambler, a motorcycle where there is no way a pillion rider can sit facing forward without burning off a substantial portion of her / his inner thigh.

That said, the missus might insist on coming for rides by sitting sideways, in true Indian style So its back to the drawing boards Royal Enfield, and time to design the 650 cc scrambler with one massive pipe on either side to ensure once and for all, that the solo rider target market is happy!

P.S - If this spied scrambler ever does make it into production, owners can annoy helmetless riders who are crawling up their bike's rear in peak traffic by giving the throttle a heavy tug while in neutral. The exhaust seems to be aimed straight up the nostrils of whoever is behind the motorcycle. Im sure they will back off immediately.

Sigh! This one is wacky even by a test mule standard. Such a lousy effort from the RE.

To get the scrambler concept right, all the designers at RE had to do was walk about the various REs participating in the Rider Mania every year, especially those who are taking part in the motocross events. Take a point or two from their ideas and make their own. It would have come out miles ahead than this one.

re: The Royal Enfield Classic Scrambler, now launched at Rs 1.62 - 2.07 lakhs

Little voices in my head have confirmed mid-March launch.
I tried watching the front wheel location and the rear wheel top side clearance and I failed to understand how one askew placed exhaust will translate to a scrambler.
Front wheel suspension travel?
Rear wheel uspension travel?
Both seem same.
God knows, maybe they finally have done something nice to that UCE500, which itself should be something worth smoking about.
Mid March. Here we go.

re: The Royal Enfield Classic Scrambler, now launched at Rs 1.62 - 2.07 lakhs

This has got to be the ugliest and comical looking bike to have come put from a domestic manufacturers stable in recent times. The colour combination only makes it worse. I pity the souls who were waiting for this monstrosity. The silencer just makes me cringe.

My post might sound like a rant but after the classy design of the twins this is an eyesore.

Hope this frankestinian creation never sees the light of day.

It looks like an afterthought. More like what the people would do to their current bullets to imitate the sweeping exhaust of the 650 twins. Come on Royal Enfield, give us a proper scrambler like the one sold in international markets

re: The Royal Enfield Classic Scrambler, now launched at Rs 1.62 - 2.07 lakhs

Re sold it as Royal Enfield Trials EFI in UK from 2009 to 2014 with following extras.
  • Upswept exhaust
  • Alloy bash plate
  • Braced handlebars
  • Solo seat
  • Dual purpose ‘knobbly’ tyres.
Looks like they have decided to sell it here too.

re: The Royal Enfield Classic Scrambler, now launched at Rs 1.62 - 2.07 lakhs

RE does the 650 twins and then does this!! So much for moving ahead and being a company that has evolv ed. On one side Sid lal says sales numbers are a part of doing business and they are looking long term. And on the other hand, we have this that looks like an attempt to hold back the sliding sales by doing a patch job. This must be the most bulbous and heavy looking scrambler ever!! They could have at least used the Himalayan platform?? It has the stance and could do with a variant to push the sales.

These are not new bikes. They seem to be some locally modified versions, of really old bikes. Just look at all the rust on those, shoddy wheels and the welded back seat

It seems to me like you just described every odd RE out there, be it CI, AVL or UCE!

re: The Royal Enfield Classic Scrambler, now launched at Rs 1.62 - 2.07 lakhs

Trials! 200kg? Those two things just don't feel right. I thought trials bikes were light as a feather.

But then, about 2 decades ago, I used to think that with their massive 350/500cc engines, they must be fast. That's why they're called Bullets.
